In both WWI and WWII (which was really just one continuous war), the combatants on both sides were exhausted and the wars were threatening to fizzle out until the USG joined in the mayhem. In both instances, the entry of the USG into the war was like pouring gasoline on a smoldering fire thus propelling both wars to "world war" status and slaughter. Good thing we joined in or the military/industrial complex would not have been able to reap the profits they did from the slaughter.
