My wife recently texted her Mother-in-Law with a well-meaning and innocuous: “How’s it going today?” My mother’s reply: “I got my flu and covid shot today.” Not: “I’m fine”…”I’m good”...”I’ve got a bit of a headache”...”Dad is stuck in an elevator in Perth Amboy”...No. She felt it absolutely crucial to proclaim that her duty as a virtuous and good human had been wholly fulfilled. Bless her little imperceptible heart and swayed inclinations. It’s not like we haven’t had conversations about this. “Mom, I’m tellin’ you, don’t go in that house!”....”Mom, don’t sign up for that class!”....”Mom, you’re playing Russian Roulette”...” “Yes Mom, I know what your doctor is saying”...”No Mom, I’m not a doctor”... “Yes Mom, I know people are dying”... “Mom….Mom……..MOM!!!”

Once God has spoken;

Twice I have heard this:

That strength belongs to God;

And that to You, O Lord, belongs lovingkindness,

For You repay a man according to his work.

— Psalm 62:11-12 LSB
