So thankful I breastfed all my kids, including a set of twins. Also thankful my daughter is following in my footsteps, so no worries there. Praying for the moms who made the choice to bottle feed that they can figure it out. Poor babies!
Respect your experience and determination and agree breastfeeding would be best. And agree that 'science' and 'society advancement' pushed the use of formula. But my experience as nurse and my own two children is that not everyone is able to manage breastfeeding, or, might be advised not to breastfeed for variety of reasons. Some sources of breast milk were available to infants in desperate need.
If mother or infant infected with a pathogen transmittable in breast milk, saliva, or blood, then additional caution needed or might not do.
Babies of those who are on certain meds or drugs may be unable or not allowed to be breastfed.
Stress, work, etc can interfere with production of breast milk so that supplement with or switch to formula is needed....
As for the past, this morning saw a string of info but now cannot find.
Having someone else breastfeed was done, whether a family member, friends, or others (not going down the road of servitude here).
Substitutes were concocted from milk of other animals and some from grains, nuts, etc. Some were filling but not necessarily nutritious.
And there was a lot of infant mortaliy.

As a former High Risk Neonatal Certified and Internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultant RN I can say most of what you say is true with a few caveats, there is only a very FEW women who do NOT have enough breast tissue to breast feed, however, there are all the obstacles you mentioned above that can make it SEEM like she can’t, another few I personally worked with actually medical reasons they couldn’t breast feed some of which you mentioned. However, there were many well established breast milk banks when I retired in the late nineties and though I have not really kept informed I find hard to believe they disappeared. I actually was hopeful they were increasing as the medical reasons for only breast milk for babies is overwhelming especially NICU population so much so that 1 NC NICU that I know about that was their standard of care. They maintained a milk bank of donated pasteurize breast milk and every single baby received their first initial feedings from that bank. I no longer remember just how many days or weeks that was prescribed but the parents were asked to sign a permit for that just like for blood transfusions and in the event the mom for whatever reason couldn’t provide her own milk human breast milk was expected to be given. So many lactating women were so generous to share their milk it was an awesome thing to be a part of. And just as there are women who medically can’t produce milk there are many who produce more than their babies need and my experience most of those not only would share but love sharing. So maybe Psaki inadvertently & accidentally spoke great advice when she said call the the pediatrician IF we can educate our physicians in the fact that we do have milk banks and we have generous moms and maybe we should start thinking about those things now for future shortages.
Great information. I didn't know enough about the milk banks to bring them up. When I was new mom, there was some networking that occurred for infants & moms whose needs were more pronounced or dire, even.
So, yes, I chose to keep my job, during a recession type of economy when my husband was out of work, and before employer's provided much in the way of accommodations (breaks & space) for collecting breast milk. Hospitals were among the least flexible or considerate about maternity leave and new moms.
Yep! You are right breast pumping stations were not common and I fear they still aren’t. I was 1 of the activists in my hospital agitating to have those made available for staff at the hospital and as I recall we had some at other locations in town. I saw it as my job to support my moms in whichever decision they felt was right for them so when they went home they had the best start in life I could facilitate non judgmentally. Interestingly at that time (mid-to late nineties) most Chinese work places provided pumping stations for their breastfeeding moms.
My Dad was a pediatrician and the formula bottles were delivered as samples to his office so that he Vinod provide them to families with newborns to try different formulas. The representatives would restock his sample closet pretty religiously one or twice a month. Maybe pediatricians still have stashed of stock that can be handed out? Might as well call the pediatrician but if Psaki meant this as helpful she certainly could have elaborated. Snap response doesn’t really provide sun help if parents are going nuts trying to figure how to feed a baby.
I breastfed my four till they naturally weaned, or 2 years of age; whichever came first. And my lovely daughters followed in my footsteps as well. What a wonderful heritage, right?
Of course, but as a retired LLL leader, we found that with due diligence and grit, many of those issues could be resolved. I believe because of the ease of formula, many moms lost that can-do attitude.
With all due respect and the hundreds of dollars I paid for for lactation consultants and the most expensive breast pump out there, there really are people who cannot resolve breastfeeding issues. The guilt is immense and our newborns lose weight while we try everything,including those supplementation contraptions, trying not to be a failure. And I was an at home mom who did not have to go back to work (this was 22 years ago). These moms need our support!!- last century we might have been able to find someone to help us nurse our babies with milk banks, but in the 90s we had no way of knowing whether the breastmilk had HIV or hepatitis in it. Plus who could afford it? My heart goes out to these moms- don’t lose hope please!!
I knew someone like you, tried everything, with lactation consultant/LLL advice and support, until the baby looked like a concentration camp victim and she gave up. But I don't think anyone is arguing that there are no women in that situation, just that we need to support women like you without sliding down that slope even further of not feeding babies in the way we are designed to do.
I take exception to the lactation consultants who claim that in very few exceptions women have problems. I know more women who sought out lactation help and still weren't able to succeed than women who had abundant milk supplies and no issues. They just really don't have statistical data or peer reviewed studies to prove that is true, and their comments are tone deaf gaslighting - like the "safe and effective" comments we hear about the jab.
What did women who couldn't breast feed do before Big Food started manufacturing processed formula with all sorts of additives? Many women act like there are no other options -- such as simply making it themselves which seems would be healthier, anyway.
It still exists in some form or another. I had to supplement all my kids because of an ill-advised breast reduction at 19 (doc swore she would not remove any milk ducts; I later learned that unless the patient is actively lactating, there is no way for a surgeon to tell for sure, and even then, it can be nearly impossible). I took huge quantities of supplements just to eke out a tiny milk supply, and hated having to supplement with formula. Thankfully, I had a dear friend who had to pump for her baby offer me her “overflow” when my third child was born.
I know the idea of your child consuming the breast milk of someone else can “skeeze out” many moms, but I was so incredibly thankful to have that option and wish I’d had it for all of my kids. The only one who was “exclusively breastfed” (albeit from two different sets of breasts) is the only one without severe allergies.
My heart goes out to women who see no choice but to work. Their babies may get 6-8 weeks of breastfeeding. Many try to do the self express, bottle and freeze, but that is incredibly difficult to maintain.
I worry that moms don't realize it's not an 'either-or,' but that nursing even once daily can sustain milk production, so for most moms, it could be a combination, even if she can't manage to pump while at work (and even the production from pumping doesn't have to be the rest of a 100% solution, but just another piece of the feeding puzzle). I pumped while on business trips out of state and on a military field training exercise. You can also pump at home every day after the baby has fed (even if it's just one bed- or night-time nursing session).
I’ve never heard that said before. Yes, mothers should continue as long as possible, and as often as possible. I’ll keep that thought in my conversations.

The conclusion is outrageous - mostly false. What's the difference between banned and not-approved for use? The fact remains that India would not allow the Pfizer shot to be given in India because Pfizer could not provide convincing safety substantiation. Perhaps the word "banned" is too strong, but in the end, India will not allow the shot. Maybe Infowars should have said India won't allow the Pfizer shot due to lack of convincing safety data, or may India doesn't believe the shot is safe due to lack of data. To say the Inforwars statement is mostly false is a matter of semantics.

There's some interesting research seeming to show that ruminant animals (and by extension all other mammals?) inherit a particular proclivity towards certain taste/food through maternal mRNA (Fred Provenza's book: Nourishment). Seriously, except for a couple of days of sore nipples, I found breastfeeding to be a breeze. Four times. No bottles to wash or fix. No packing food supplies for baby for short or long outings.
With all due regard for the very few women for whom breastfeeding is not feasible, it’s the most natural and easiest thing ever. My husband was very happy that he wasn’t doing feedings in the wee hours of the morning. And I was glad to have that job because he was getting up in the morning to go out and support us.
We have created lifestyles that adults may think are superior, but how we live now is not good for children.
Completely agree. Breastfeeding is easy and inexpensive. There is a learning curve and some soreness, but as you state it is short lived. It provides a bond. And no one ever mentions that it is also healthy for the new mother as it helps in the post partum healing process and induces natural hormonal changes. In a time when weight issues plague so many, I quickly lost those extra pounds by breastfeeding until my children naturally weaned themselves.
Breast feeding not easy and I think it depends o. The training given at hospital. My sis was unable to breast feed first child niece 9 years old. The second child niece 3 year old was breast fed until 2 years of age. Sometimes you are lucky baby latches on easily and sometimes either mother doesn’t produce or it’s just not easy. Sister did pump for a little while with first baby but just didn’t produce very much. The second one no issues and the second one is an Amazon proportion child. Muscular tall not over weight but you wouldn’t want to carry her for more than 5 min she is at least 50 solid pounds.
1) Congratulations to all who breastfed as many infants and as many months or years as you did.
2) Thank you to the active advocates of breastfeeding for being natural and reiterating the benefits, in particular, nutrition and health.
3) Personally appreciate C&C reader interest in the topic and helpful suggestions for alternatives to infant formula.
4) For everyone weighing in in this topic, please try to at least acknowledge that breastfeeding was not/is not easy for everyone, no matter how many times and how many ways that some folks want to insist that it is.
The effect can seem to say that those not breastfeeding their children aren't as good, caring, ethical, moral, or whatever, as they are. The repetition of saying it's the 'right' thing to do combined with examples of personal successes can have others feeling they are being criticized and were wrong for not knuckling down and doing more to succeed. Please stop judging.
Maybe some aren't feeling they are being judgemental but kind of comes across that way.
5) A 'decision' or 'choice' to not breastfeed or not continue to breastfeed can be for numerous reasons. Those reasons are not our business or concern and above all, the reasons and the situations they faced are personal and may be stressful to recall.

There is post above that gives a very insightful discussion and link to article on goat milk formula with detailed recipies for fortfying wiyh vitamins and nutrients. She stated goats milk had to be diluted 50/50. I believe because of too many carbs. She also discused the fact that goat milk is A2 casein protein which is not allerginic like A1 protein. (Same thing with Jersey cows - A2 milk)
There is a milk called A2 which is easier to digest at wholefoods. Feel so sorry for these new moms if need formula now have to scramble to make it. Maybe this is good because anything made at home is better than shelf life of forever formula.
The A2 milk is a big deal. My Functional Dr said the A1 protein is as bad as gluten for food sensitivity. He cautioned me to avoid ANY gluten and A1 milk protein. He suggested that also applies to butter and cream. I find them at Natural Grocers.
Taste just like regular milk. All the milk substitutes have carbs high carbs. Regular milk very low in carbs I saw the A2 milk at wholefoods got the 2 % works very well with coffee in am.

So thankful I breastfed all my kids, including a set of twins. Also thankful my daughter is following in my footsteps, so no worries there. Praying for the moms who made the choice to bottle feed that they can figure it out. Poor babies!
Respect your experience and determination and agree breastfeeding would be best. And agree that 'science' and 'society advancement' pushed the use of formula. But my experience as nurse and my own two children is that not everyone is able to manage breastfeeding, or, might be advised not to breastfeed for variety of reasons. Some sources of breast milk were available to infants in desperate need.
If mother or infant infected with a pathogen transmittable in breast milk, saliva, or blood, then additional caution needed or might not do.
Babies of those who are on certain meds or drugs may be unable or not allowed to be breastfed.
Stress, work, etc can interfere with production of breast milk so that supplement with or switch to formula is needed....
As for the past, this morning saw a string of info but now cannot find.
Having someone else breastfeed was done, whether a family member, friends, or others (not going down the road of servitude here).
Substitutes were concocted from milk of other animals and some from grains, nuts, etc. Some were filling but not necessarily nutritious.

As a former High Risk Neonatal Certified and Internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultant RN I can say most of what you say is true with a few caveats, there is only a very FEW women who do NOT have enough breast tissue to breast feed, however, there are all the obstacles you mentioned above that can make it SEEM like she can’t, another few I personally worked with actually medical reasons they couldn’t breast feed some of which you mentioned. However, there were many well established breast milk banks when I retired in the late nineties and though I have not really kept informed I find hard to believe they disappeared. I actually was hopeful they were increasing as the medical reasons for only breast milk for babies is overwhelming especially NICU population so much so that 1 NC NICU that I know about that was their standard of care. They maintained a milk bank of donated pasteurize breast milk and every single baby received their first initial feedings from that bank. I no longer remember just how many days or weeks that was prescribed but the parents were asked to sign a permit for that just like for blood transfusions and in the event the mom for whatever reason couldn’t provide her own milk human breast milk was expected to be given. So many lactating women were so generous to share their milk it was an awesome thing to be a part of. And just as there are women who medically can’t produce milk there are many who produce more than their babies need and my experience most of those not only would share but love sharing. So maybe Psaki inadvertently & accidentally spoke great advice when she said call the the pediatrician IF we can educate our physicians in the fact that we do have milk banks and we have generous moms and maybe we should start thinking about those things now for future shortages.

Great information. I didn't know enough about the milk banks to bring them up. When I was new mom, there was some networking that occurred for infants & moms whose needs were more pronounced or dire, even.
So, yes, I chose to keep my job, during a recession type of economy when my husband was out of work, and before employer's provided much in the way of accommodations (breaks & space) for collecting breast milk. Hospitals were among the least flexible or considerate about maternity leave and new moms.
Yep! You are right breast pumping stations were not common and I fear they still aren’t. I was 1 of the activists in my hospital agitating to have those made available for staff at the hospital and as I recall we had some at other locations in town. I saw it as my job to support my moms in whichever decision they felt was right for them so when they went home they had the best start in life I could facilitate non judgmentally. Interestingly at that time (mid-to late nineties) most Chinese work places provided pumping stations for their breastfeeding moms.
My Dad was a pediatrician and the formula bottles were delivered as samples to his office so that he Vinod provide them to families with newborns to try different formulas. The representatives would restock his sample closet pretty religiously one or twice a month. Maybe pediatricians still have stashed of stock that can be handed out? Might as well call the pediatrician but if Psaki meant this as helpful she certainly could have elaborated. Snap response doesn’t really provide sun help if parents are going nuts trying to figure how to feed a baby.

The guilt is immense and our newborns lose weight while we try everything,including those supplementation contraptions, trying not to be a failure. And I was an at home mom who did not have to go back to work (this was 22 years ago). These moms need our support!!- last century we might have been able to find someone to help us nurse our babies with milk banks, but in the 90s we had no way of knowing whether the breastmilk had HIV or hepatitis in it. Plus who could afford it? My heart goes out to these moms- don’t lose hope please!!

I knew someone like you, tried everything, with lactation consultant/LLL advice and support, until the baby looked like a concentration camp victim and she gave up. But I don't think anyone is arguing that there are no women in that situation, just that we need to support women like you without sliding down that slope even further of not feeding babies in the way we are designed to do.
I take exception to the lactation consultants who claim that in very few exceptions women have problems. I know more women who sought out lactation help and still weren't able to succeed than women who had abundant milk supplies and no issues. They just really don't have statistical data or peer reviewed studies to prove that is true, and their comments are tone deaf gaslighting - like the "safe and effective" comments we hear about the jab.

It still exists in some form or another. I had to supplement all my kids because of an ill-advised breast reduction at 19 (doc swore she would not remove any milk ducts; I later learned that unless the patient is actively lactating, there is no way for a surgeon to tell for sure, and even then, it can be nearly impossible). I took huge quantities of supplements just to eke out a tiny milk supply, and hated having to supplement with formula. Thankfully, I had a dear friend who had to pump for her baby offer me her “overflow” when my third child was born.
I know the idea of your child consuming the breast milk of someone else can “skeeze out” many moms, but I was so incredibly thankful to have that option and wish I’d had it for all of my kids. The only one who was “exclusively breastfed” (albeit from two different sets of breasts) is the only one without severe allergies.

My heart goes out to women who see no choice but to work. Their babies may get 6-8 weeks of breastfeeding. Many try to do the self express, bottle and freeze, but that is incredibly difficult to maintain.
I worry that moms don't realize it's not an 'either-or,' but that nursing even once daily can sustain milk production, so for most moms, it could be a combination, even if she can't manage to pump while at work (and even the production from pumping doesn't have to be the rest of a 100% solution, but just another piece of the feeding puzzle). I pumped while on business trips out of state and on a military field training exercise. You can also pump at home every day after the baby has fed (even if it's just one bed- or night-time nursing session).

I don’t think anything should shock you at this point about depression anxiety post partum. Maybe the vaccines are contributing to women not producing milk. So sad!! I’m glad I don’t have infants now.
Thanks, Kim. Very true. We're getting hammered from every possible angle, and now women who've just given birth now finding they may be unable to find formula??? And some who never gave the idea of breast feeding a thought -- the effort, the exhaustion, the time, and the pain (sometimes/often times) -- now finding they just might have to??? I just keep shaking my head at all of this.

Seriously, except for a couple of days of sore nipples, I found breastfeeding to be a breeze. Four times. No bottles to wash or fix. No packing food supplies for baby for short or long outings.
With all due regard for the very few women for whom breastfeeding is not feasible, it’s the most natural and easiest thing ever. My husband was very happy that he wasn’t doing feedings in the wee hours of the morning. And I was glad to have that job because he was getting up in the morning to go out and support us.
We have created lifestyles that adults may think are superior, but how we live now is not good for children.
Completely agree. Breastfeeding is easy and inexpensive. There is a learning curve and some soreness, but as you state it is short lived. It provides a bond. And no one ever mentions that it is also healthy for the new mother as it helps in the post partum healing process and induces natural hormonal changes. In a time when weight issues plague so many, I quickly lost those extra pounds by breastfeeding until my children naturally weaned themselves.

Breast feeding not easy and I think it depends o. The training given at hospital. My sis was unable to breast feed first child niece 9 years old. The second child niece 3 year old was breast fed until 2 years of age. Sometimes you are lucky baby latches on easily and sometimes either mother doesn’t produce or it’s just not easy. Sister did pump for a little while with first baby but just didn’t produce very much. The second one no issues and the second one is an Amazon proportion child. Muscular tall not over weight but you wouldn’t want to carry her for more than 5 min she is at least 50 solid pounds.
1) Congratulations to all who breastfed as many infants and as many months or years as you did.
2) Thank you to the active advocates of breastfeeding for being natural and reiterating the benefits, in particular, nutrition and health.
3) Personally appreciate C&C reader interest in the topic and helpful suggestions for alternatives to infant formula.
4) For everyone weighing in in this topic, please try to at least acknowledge that breastfeeding was not/is not easy for everyone, no matter how many times and how many ways that some folks want to insist that it is.
The effect can seem to say that those not breastfeeding their children aren't as good, caring, ethical, moral, or whatever, as they are. The repetition of saying it's the 'right' thing to do combined with examples of personal successes can have others feeling they are being criticized and were wrong for not knuckling down and doing more to succeed. Please stop judging.
Maybe some aren't feeling they are being judgemental but kind of comes across that way.
5) A 'decision' or 'choice' to not breastfeed or not continue to breastfeed can be for numerous reasons. Those reasons are not our business or concern and above all, the reasons and the situations they faced are personal and may be stressful to recall.
Maybe I'm the only one for whom the comments finally hit a nerve and it may come across as defensive, and perhaps it is.

Very good point!! Most of the countries are far more likely to breastfeed then we are. So why give them all our formula?

There is post above that gives a very insightful discussion and link to article on goat milk formula with detailed recipies for fortfying wiyh vitamins and nutrients. She stated goats milk had to be diluted 50/50. I believe because of too many carbs. She also discused the fact that goat milk is A2 casein protein which is not allerginic like A1 protein. (Same thing with Jersey cows - A2 milk)
There is a milk called A2 which is easier to digest at wholefoods. Feel so sorry for these new moms if need formula now have to scramble to make it. Maybe this is good because anything made at home is better than shelf life of forever formula.
The A2 milk is a big deal. My Functional Dr said the A1 protein is as bad as gluten for food sensitivity. He cautioned me to avoid ANY gluten and A1 milk protein. He suggested that also applies to butter and cream. I find them at Natural Grocers.
Taste just like regular milk. All the milk substitutes have carbs high carbs. Regular milk very low in carbs I saw the A2 milk at wholefoods got the 2 % works very well with coffee in am.

I’m not bringing him up to market him but to encourage the substack writers who are on the good guys side to connect with him.
He’s saying some very very bad things about what’s in the vaccines and what’s in Covid. This is far worse than what most on our side thought about the evil taking place and it may explain the behavior of the CCP with these lockdowns.
