I appreciate Jeff’s comments regarding where data centers should be located. In a perfect world, they should be located where they don’t compete with residential and community resources. Eminent domain should be a last resort.
They shouldn’t compete at all for resources but add to the community they’re in by paying a boatload of taxes, & by efficiently managing their own water & power needs as Jeff says. And as President Trump notes, not all data centers are the same, the local communities affected hold all the cards & can smartly get a great deal.
Here in Michigan 23 new areas for data centers are being fast tracked. One, in Saline, is already under construction. Everyone of the projects are to be built on prime farmland. Along with solar complexes, the farm land in this state is under attack. There are hundreds of now abandoned auto manufacturing sites and other related sites available for rehabbing into data centers. There is a huge shopping mall 20 miles from me that has been for sale for years now, only a handful of stores still operating. Places like this would seem perfect for data centers. But just like solar complexes, the government money is better laundered through leasing or buying cheap farm land. That is why I am against them. As a country we seem to have lost our ability to retrofit and also think outside the box.

It’s a location-specific problem, depending on the competency and corruptness of the local governments. I read if one community where the taxes expected from the data centers will cover property taxes. Property owners may no longer be subject to this illegal taxation.
Here in FL, with the pending vote on suspending certain property taxes, I'd expect every city and county to be looking at data centers for potential extra income to replace said taxes. They do not need to build these noisy, polluting data centers next to neighborhoods, homes, and shopping. I saw a video interview last night of a poor woman who has one sitting about 100 to 200 yards from her home. I do not know how she can bare the noise. And nobody will buy that house. She is stuck with a nightmare. The greedy data center industry is more to blame for the backlash than is China.

AI can read mammograms and other health care images better than humans. It will be used to develop drugs to treat diseases years faster than humans. When railroads came, actual people fought the tracks, the noise, the danger and eminent domain. When electricity came, they fought the poles, wires and transmission lines running across their land.
Today it’s AI data centers.
If Georgia is abusing eminent domain, fight the abuse. Protect the landowner. Make the companies pay. But that’s an argument over how we build it, not whether America should build it.
We’ve been through this with railroads, electricity, highways, pipelines, telephones, computers, the Internet, fiber optics and cell towers. Add nearly every major medical technology we now depend on.
Meanwhile, Loudoun County, VA shows the other side: data centers generate roughly 38% of its General Fund revenue, and the county says they return about $26 in taxes for every $1 of county services they consume.
AI is going to require power, land, fiber and infrastructure. Somebody will always object to where it goes.
Protect people from abuse, absolutely.
But stopping the technology isn’t the answer. Funny thing about progress—the people fighting it today usually come back tomorrow wanting more of what it produced.
I appreciate Jeff’s comments regarding where data centers should be located. In a perfect world, they should be located where they don’t compete with residential and community resources. Eminent domain should be a last resort.
They shouldn’t compete at all for resources but add to the community they’re in by paying a boatload of taxes, & by efficiently managing their own water & power needs as Jeff says. And as President Trump notes, not all data centers are the same, the local communities affected hold all the cards & can smartly get a great deal.
Here in Michigan 23 new areas for data centers are being fast tracked. One, in Saline, is already under construction. Everyone of the projects are to be built on prime farmland. Along with solar complexes, the farm land in this state is under attack. There are hundreds of now abandoned auto manufacturing sites and other related sites available for rehabbing into data centers. There is a huge shopping mall 20 miles from me that has been for sale for years now, only a handful of stores still operating. Places like this would seem perfect for data centers. But just like solar complexes, the government money is better laundered through leasing or buying cheap farm land. That is why I am against them. As a country we seem to have lost our ability to retrofit and also think outside the box.
Sorry LMWC, I respectfully disagree. That is for your area, and it doesn’t give anyone the right to block their development for other people’s areas. It’s a location-specific problem, depending on the competency and corruptness of the local governments. In an area like yours, yes - fight like the dickens for it to be done right, but don’t fight that they not be allowed to be done anywhere, to be against them all.

I read if one community where the taxes expected from the data centers will cover property taxes. Property owners may no longer be subject to this illegal taxation.
Here in FL, with the pending vote on suspending certain property taxes, I'd expect every city and county to be looking at data centers for potential extra income to replace said taxes. But noooooo, why would I think? (IFKYK) There are way too many NIMBYs here that have been distracted by the mostly false accusations of power and water.

I agree that the fear of new technology exists. But there truly is something to fear. I'll preface this by saying that I use AI daily. It's like the tech support company that can help with virtually any problem.
In the OpenAI/Hugging face incident, details have trickled out. Late last week it was revealed that the AI agents collaborated together to perform their tasks, almost completely devoid of the ethics that they're trying to embed. Here's what happened (courtesy of Grok):

As Americans, we truly need to win this arms race. AI defensive operations need to catch up with offensive capabilities. We're stuck with it now and the good guys need to win the race. But at the same time, we all need to build skills and resourcefulness to survive a possible future where the technology has to be shut down. This could very well be Skynet.

My county allowed 4 six-story apartment buildings in the middle of no where to be built near my house. These buildings are literally the tallest buildings for miles so I should be able to sue the county since they approved those buildings.

I saw a video interview last night of a poor woman who has one sitting about 100 to 200 yards from her home. I do not know how she can bare the noise. And nobody will buy that house. She is stuck with a nightmare. The greedy data center industry is more to blame for the backlash than is China.

Help me understand...just what exactly is it that I, as an individual and others like me, do not have currently and is so drastically needed that we have to have thousands of data centers popping up like dandelions all around. I understand what the tech giants would get from this, but what do 'we the people' get out of this???
AI can read mammograms and other health care images better than humans. It will be used to develop drugs to treat diseases years faster than humans. It helps in everything from searching history for court cases to IRS rulings to interior design to looking at traffic patterns to best construct our highways, and on and on. Not to mention high paying job creation. We need to win against China, not wait for them to overtake us.
As somebody who literally trained the AI to detect abnormalities on x-rays and the like, I seriously doubt AI is "better," just faster.
But let's just assume China builds super medical AI first.
