Regarding Russia....

We have a massive problem. We don't even have the capability to engage in a serious war. Our manufacturing capability is minimal. We don't even grow all of our own food. We cannot provide the essential basics needed to engage in a large scale war....which obviously means the people in DC are insane maniacs.

The treaty is void, and you voided it. Now, every time you play peeping Benn, I get to punch you in the face. That hard fact should sober any of us who want to re-consider alliances with Russia. Russia's geopolitical and military strategies seem to be very much determined by the individual sitting in the big chair - much more so than is the case with the USA or any Euro nation. Putin projects sensibility, respect for Christianity, and a reasonable attitude. But he is alone in doing so, in the past century of Russian/USSR history.

There was a very insightful article in The Free Press this week on this exact topic. Niall Ferguson argues that we are in a new Cold War, but this time WE are the Soviets:

WE are the ones with an unhealthy population, walking around stoned all the time, with a "dispensary" on every corner and Big Pharma pumping us full of poison.

WE have a military that appears mighty but is nothing but a cheap facade.

WE are governed by geriatric "leaders" who refuse to step aside to let a new generation take over.

WE have an economy that looks dominant but is built on sand.

China could flick us aside like a fly while barely lifting finger, any time they decide to, just as Reagan was able to reveal the "mighty" Soviet Union as a paper tiger. Depressing.

Johnny-O, I've been thinking the same thing for a while. Unless we have some ultra-powerful alien-tech secret weapons ready to be trotted out of some Nevada desert bunker in an emergency, we're woefully unprepared for any major conflicts. We depend on some of the very countries we've alienated for our basic needs; they don't need to fire a missile at us - all they need to do is shut off the valve to the supply pipeline. This provoking and posing is empty and is destined to result in the rest of the world sanctioning US. These Washington neocon assholes don't give a rap about the U.S. They're all about profits and want to keep them rolling as long as possible. The situation in Syria was very different. Trump showed he could work exceedingly well with many leaders of the world. including Rocket Man from North Korea. You have no idea what he may have negotiotiated with Putin. Trumps clear ability to see the view point of others, and understanding of the long Russian History in the Ukraine, would very likely have signed the peace deal the US sabatoged.

Expand full comment
Benjamin Two N's's avatar

That's not correct.

In June 2019, President Donald Trump ordered the movement of an additional 1,000 United States soldiers to Poland from Germany. Unlike the Fort Trump proposal, the transferred units would be based at existing Polish facilities.[8] The same month, Reuters reported that the U.S. military base proposal was dead after Polish and American officials could not agree on a funding arrangement, with Poland agreeing to contribute $2 billion to the project, less than requested by the Trump administration.[9]

Both the American and Polish governments denied the accuracy of the Reuters report, with Polish presidential aide Krzysztof Szczerski describing it as "fake news" and United States Ambassador to Poland Georgette Mosbacher tweeting, in response to the story, that Trump and Duda's "vision for increased US presence in Poland will be even greater than originally outlined".[10] A United States Department of State spokesperson later emailed Reuters saying that talks for a U.S. military base in Poland were proceeding on schedule.[10]

In August 2020, United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo signed, on behalf of the United States, an agreement with Poland by which that nation would accept the redeployment of a further 5,500 American troops – including the forward command post of V Corps – with the potential for a 20,000-person surge capacity. According to BBC News, initial hopes were for the proposed military base to be the garrison of an entire division; the agreement "falls well short of this. But it sends a clear signal about Mr Trump's preferences" and that the concept "could be as much about politics as it is about strategy".

It started under Trump.

Also, my unit, the 278th armored, went to Poland and also Ukraine under Trump

https://www.tn.gov/military/news/2020/1/24/tennessee-guard-s-278th-completes-nato-mission-in-poland.html

Trump showed he could work with Putin by massacring his private neo-nazi army with apaches, m777s, Himars, and everything in between.

We assembled for the pledge every morning at the private grade school I attended. I’ll argue the pledge is just as or even more relevant for ALL students based on where we are now as a country.

There are too many citizens that disdain or even hate this country. Until they acquire the critical thinking skills to differentiate between our country and the corrupt officials in charge, the pledge of allegiance will help ingrain a bit of honor.

Hmmmm… from a quick search on the internet: Francis Bellamy was an American editor, clergyman, and author. He is best known for writing the original version of the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America in 1892.

Early Life and Career

Francis Julius Bellamy was born on May 18, 1855, in Mount Morris, New York. He studied at the University of Rochester and later became a Baptist minister. Bellamy was also an editor and author, and he was involved in the Christian socialist movement.

The Pledge of Allegiance

In 1892, Bellamy wrote the original version of the Pledge of Allegiance, which was published in a magazine called The Youth’s Companion. The pledge was intended to be recited by schoolchildren on Columbus Day, October 12, 1892. The original version read:

“I pledge allegiance to my Flag and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

Legacy

Francis Bellamy’s Pledge of Allegiance has undergone several revisions since its original publication, but he is still credited with writing the main pledge. Bellamy’s work as a Christian socialist and Baptist minister also contributed to his legacy, as he believed strongly in the separation of church and state.

Interesting. "Christian Socialist" and "believed strongly in separation of church and state" suggest that his "socialism" is something very different from secular marxism. If one reads the Bible, it's pretty clear that any kind of "socialism" or community sharing has to be voluntary and without compulsion.

The other worldview, the one that does not see God as having a meaningful role in what is going on around us … that view is one of randomness and chaos. Why are bad things happening? This view cannot explain. What makes things good? Sorry, no answer for that either. What is the purpose of it all? Ha ha! We just throw up our hands and shrug WHO KNOWS? Living in this utter darkness is still favorable than measuring up with God or even simply admitting He is there.

I have very mixed feelings about what is going on. As a Christian, I completely agree that everything that is wrong with our country has grown out of our straying from God. However, throughout history, every time the government aligns with the church, it goes badly for the church. Not that I prefer the animosity or persecution, and I don’t like or agree with activists who want all traces of Christianity erased from public life. But like you, I think it would be better to have no official agendas at school. Allow but not require.

Expand full comment
Essay33's avatar

So how well has removing God from education worked? There is not a vacuum, the absence of God has been filled by legitimate evil. Your argument is that it would be bad for government to align with the Church because it goes badly for the Church.

Christianity spread worldwide when governments aligned with it. When they stop, what happens? See Russia. See America.

How did US public schools become bastions of sexualization and disordered affections? How have they become indoctrination centers that turn out shocking numbers of functionally illiterate teens with no knowledge of history and no STEM skills?

Expand full comment
Bryn Cannon's avatar

I agree with you, removing God from education has been a disaster, and you’re right, the void has been filled by evil. Where we might disagree is how to go about fixing it. I think allowing rather than requiring is the better approach, for many reasons stated better in other comment threads.

However, it is absolutely not true that governments aligning with the church has spread Christianity worldwide. This is what has led to every embarrassing problem the church has suffered - the Crusades, the Inquisition, pedophile priests, all of the unbiblical and oppressive requirements tyrannizing faithful Catholics through several centuries of state and church collusion. The early church thrived during governmental persecution, and spread like wildfire when it was only seeking to please God and not the state. Jesus doesn’t need governments to help Him. Satan tries to get the governments involved to mess it up, divide our loyalties.

Again, the better way is allowing God in, not governmental requirements.

The Ten Commandments are really, in essence, just two:

1. Obey God

2. Do not steal (perhaps, Do not take that which you have not the right)

How about these two rules, edited by Jesus himself?

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’There is no commandment greater than these.”

Mark 12:30-31
