Today, Dec. 21, the sun reaches its lowest point in the southern sky. It's called the winter solstice for it marks the official start of winter in the Northern Hemisphere. "Solstice" means "the sun stands still." The ancient astronomers charted the movement of the sun by monitoring the lengths and movements of shadows on the Earth. The mid-day shadows would lengthen until the winter solstice, then for 3 days the shadow lengths would remain the same, as if the sun's descent into a southern grave had been arrested. After 3 days the shadows would begin to shorten, heralding the rebirth of the sun, its return trip to the north and the prospect for renewal of life on Earth come spring. Many ancient peoples celebrated the Winter Solstice like we celebrate Christmas.

Some of my Christian friends probably think I'm a pagan because I doubt the resurrection; but, since history is filled with stories of gods being re-animated after spending three days AND three nights being dead, maybe this is just one of many things we do not understand. Maybe there's a timetable for God to work his magic and He shows his power to every civilized society on Earth at his pleasure.

I'm one of the few people I know who actually loves winter solstice (not as a pagan observation, just as a scientific occurrence). Yes, I remember learning in school (went to a Catholic school) that as many Pagans converted to Christianity in the early days of the church that Christmas traditions were created as a nod to new believers who were reluctant to give up their Winter Solstice celebrations so when Constantine converted, he replaced Saturnalia with Christmas. No idea if it's true or not, think in the time of Christ they used a different calendar.

Expand full comment
daverkb's avatar

Well, the calendar has changed. But what does not change is the fact that each year there are two equinoxes and two solstices which mark the passage of one complete rotation around the sun. This one complete rotation around the sun is one year no matter which calendar is used, and no matter the fudge/adjustment factoring required in a 'calendar year' over time mounting. Whether pagan, Christian or what not, this is the same cycle controlling of all life through the progression of the seasons. It is something more or less immutable for all practical consideration.

And so, the coinciding of celebrations is dominated by the physical facts surrounding the earth's movements around the sun no matter the religion. And there are no coincidences surrounding this. That Christmas comes that the time when days begin to lengthen, meaning more light coming into the world is no accident or coincidence, at least for the Western World's peoples inhabiting northern clime.

Of course, opposite things are happening in the Northern and Southern hemispheres. But then again, we are dealing with people and historical/cultural express of circumstances.

The rules were no cell phones, come to visit, play board games, etc. We had a large bowl by the front door where all electric devices were deposited. (I had to pry a few of them out of the hands of reluctant guests. "But what if my daughter calls?" "She's 23 years old. She'll figure it out.") Everyone brought either a hearty soup or stew and some of us gathered around the firepit out back. Everyone said it was one on the most enjoyable times they'd ever had.

Yes, because Christ’s birth was actually in the fall near the feast of tabernacle time. So whatever significance of the winter solstice to his birth is actually probably coincidental. Technically Christmas was the sun god’s birthday. It was because of church politics it was changed. But either way Easter/passover is probably a more important holiday that Christians are to observe.

A Winter Solstice Prayer

– by Edward Hayes

In the heart of every person on this Earth

burns the spark of luminous goodness;

in no heart is there total darkness.

May we who have celebrated this winter solstice,

by our lives and service, by our prayers and love,

call forth from one another the light and the love

that is hidden in every heart.

The Virgin Birth..........................

The Apostles’ Creed, as it summarizes the Biblical faith, begins, “I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth: And in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord: Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, Born of the Virgin Mary.” Among other things, these opening words emphasize two things. First, we cannot call this the church’s creed or reduce it merely to the apostolic age’s confession of faith. It is personal: “I believe.” It is intended to be a creed for every believer in every age. Second, it emphatically asserts the Virgin Birth. Jesus Christ was both truly human and truly divine. In Him God created a new man, another Adam (1 Cor. 15:45), so that humanity could have another beginning. The old humanity born of Adam, because of the Fall, is born into sin and death. The new humanity, which is born again in Jesus Christ, is born to righteousness and everlasting life.

From the beginning of His ministry, Jesus declared that a new life and a new age began in and with Him. “Blessed are the poor in spirit [that is, they who feel their spiritual need, as Goodspeed paraphrases it]: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matt. 5:3). “Blessed are the meek [the tamed of God]: for they shall inherit the earth” (Matt. 5:5). Jesus brought in a new covenant, a new life, and a new age. The task of the church is the proclamation of this good news and the extension of Christ’s Kingdom of grace.

But many men, both inside the church and outside of it, have placed their hope for a new life and a new age in someone other than the Virgin-born Savior. They have looked for salvation by means of a political program, a socialized world, a humanistic society, by means of education, science, and other things. Basically, all these hopes have one thing in common: they believe that a new plan or a new arrangement of things can produce heaven on earth. They look therefore to a new environment to remake man. The Christian, however, looks to Jesus Christ who remakes the heart of man, who takes a man dead in sins and dead to God and makes him a new man under God. As St. John said, “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God” (John 1:12–13).

The Virgin Birth is a miracle, the miracle of a new creation, a new humanity. The rebirth of every Christian is also a miracle, the miracle of regeneration by Jesus Christ. This second miracle depends on the first. Because Jesus Christ is very man of very man and very God of very God, He is able to remake man after His own image. He is able to preserve man from the powers of darkness, and He is able to subject all things to His own dominion. Indeed, the goal of history is declared in advance: “The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever” (Rev. 11:15). We have a glorious destiny in Him who is born of the Virgin Mary.

Hi Phil,

Love the heart of this message. As a person who has made this confession too many times to count, a few related questions.

The Holy Spirit works in your heart, and it’s only by and through His work one can make such a confession. With that in mind, why not just allow the Spirit to guide our tongue as we echo scripture back to God? This “discovery” is born from the quandary of “He descended into Hell.” I’ve heard 18,000 messages (my emphasis) on this “doctrine” and none of them bear the resemblance of a Scripture echo.

Likely a little heavy of a response and definitely not what you were expecting, but, isn’t that life?

Blessings, brother.

And may none of this detract from the heart of the message and the glory of this incredible gift from above.

I believe all of our speech should "echo" the Word. "15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you..." 1 Peter 3 Our understanding of God's Word as empowered by the Holy Spirit is built upon the saints that came before us over the last 2,000 years as the Holy Spirit increases our knowledge and understanding of God's Revelation. It is times such as now when knowledge in the church has waned that we must relearn the truths that our forefathers in the saints so clearly understood. Doctrines are but a reminder of truths that have been forgotten or discarded. There is much we can learn from those saints who came before us.

Expand full comment
dan bee's avatar

Thanks for the response, Phil.

Do you believe that our understanding of God's Word is BUILT upon the saints that came before us over the last 2,000 years? Honest question. I know God makes us all different, and for some (you) they feast and grow off the learnings and observations of those that have gone on before us. I truly believe that. But for others (me), all I need is God’s Word, as I wholly depend on the Holy Spirit to lead me in truth. (Not to suggest you don’t!) As I’ve often reflected on Rev. 22 (and Deut. 4 + 12), and knowing man’s heart is always looking to contribute to God’s work, I often feel “our”confessions can play that role. Said another way, my confession, should be Spirit led, and in response to reading His Word. I should not rely on the confession of another man, as that really is his confession.

It really is a deep struggle of mine, and so I thank you in advance for your grace and consideration.

Blessings, as you continue to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen. 2 Peter 3:18

"...wholly depend on the Holy Spirit to lead me in truth." With prayerful reliance upon the Holy Spirit, we, as individual Christians, are to test or judge all things by God's Word and speak the Word prophetically to the issues of our day. This is our calling in this life as members of the body of Christ on earth, the church militant. We are all priests and prophets of our Lord and King who sits on the throne of God whose rule will be without end.

The question I perceive you addressing is the question of the one and the many which is only resolved in the Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit - one God in three Persons. As individual Christians, we are all members of the body of Christ on earth. We were all made members of His one body when Christ Jesus ascended to heaven and, having been glorified as King of kings and Lord of lords, He poured out the Holy Spirit on His followers inaugurating His kingdom rule making us all one together in His body. Thus when we gather together in congregational worship as the body of Christ, we join together with those who came before us with the rest of the heavenly host in worship to the One True God.

As in all things, statements of faith that have been handed down to us by our forefathers in Christ are to be tested by God's Word with reliance upon the Holy Spirit. Especially in times of apostasy when the knowledge of God's Revelation has waned in the church such as we see today when many church shepherds are leading the congregations into false doctrines that tickle the ear, it is important to compare the understanding that our forefathers in Christ had delivered to us and test all these things by the Word of God.

As individual Christians, we are not an island unto ourselves. Rather, the Holy Spirit indwells the whole body of Christ and empowers the body of Christ to carry out Christ's will in this life. As individuals, we rely upon the leading of the Holy Spirit as well as being members empowered as one body in the Lord. So as a practical matter, we are heirs not only to what the Holy Spirit reveals to us individually but we are heirs to the wisdom that the Holy Spirit has revealed in the body of Christ down through the ages. This is the "mystery" of the One and the Many.

I just read an interesting article on substack about how Hunter Biden’s pardon could actually open him up to being forced to testify in front of congress about all his family’s dealings over the 10-year pardon period, since he can’t plead the 5th. (Pleading the 5th is only to protect yourself from criminal charges, and since he’s immune…)

I would love to hear Jeff’s perspective, if it’s any different.

That’s the opposite of what this article is saying. It’s saying that since Hunter has immunity, he can’t refuse to testify based on self-incrimination since he can’t be charged with anything.

I’ve posted it here before, but I am completely convinced that Hunter there Biden hates his father for making him be the family bag man, so I wonder if this will allow him to formally testify against the family business dealings while still appearing blameless to his father? It’s a stretch, I know, but that’s where my mind goes. We shall see.

Valerie, I posted that exact question right here about a week or so ago. Can he claim the 5th if he can’t incriminate himself? If he can’t and refuses to testify, or worse…lies…, it’s a whole new crime outside his pardon window. I was hoping either Jeff or another attorney here might clarify the law on the matter.

The article I linked to says Hunter cannot plead the 5th since that is specifically so one can’t be charged criminally.
