The Trump effect just got my husband a 50% raise at his job. It wasn’t even a personal raise - the company looked at industry standards for his career and realized - suddenly, after 50 years of pay stagnation in this field - that they needed to increase the pay scale for this skilled labor category.

Companies don’t want to lose desperately needed and limited skilled employees (aviation mechanics with A&P licenses) and need to be able to compete to hire the few who are replacing the Vietnam era A&P retirees.

But the industry knew this all was an issue for decades (it was talked about when my husband was in college and getting his license over 20 years ago) and weeks before Trump gets back in, here we are.

Coincidence? 🤷‍♀️

I think we will continue to see corporations large and small dismantling their DEI departments now that they have "permission" to do so. The policies they enact have a deleterious effect on productivity and the departments themselves represent unnecessary overhead and any reduction in overhead goes straight to the bottom line.

The leader of the UKs conservative, Kemi Badenoch, party spoke about the need to "diet" the administrative state and get people back to real work. Apparently this brilliant woman was on her way to a US university (Stanford maybe?) when her frugal father warned about how to pay for the experience. So she headed to the UK and some call her the modern day Margaret Thatcher

Marion's avatar

I live in the U.K. and Badenoch is an utter and total waste of space - she was a senior member of the Tory ‘government’ for years and did absolutely nothing, and I do mean nothing for this country, (in fact she might have contributed negatively). We are in dire straits here in the U.K. thanks to a Labour government that was voted in recently (by a very small majority of voters) because the Tories did such a terrible job for many years. I would rather the woman had taken her useless self off to the US than pontificate from the very comfortable benches the UK Houses of Parliament. She is a DEI hire. I wish her family, and most of the families from her country, had never set foot in the UK.

It was completely unexpected to me - we have chosen to sacrifice a second income so that I can stay home and teach my kids and that has been well worth it but it’s often tight financially. This will be an income boost comparable with to me having taken on a steady part time job. Crazy.

I do not think this would have happened without the Trump effect - without an imminent boost to the economy opening up more job options to Americans across the board, companies would (I believe) have continued to suppress wages because employees didn’t have anywhere else to go and needed to hold onto current jobs.

The sacrifice is well worth it. We chose the same path. Said “no” to the luxuries and conveniences that all our fiends were getting and doing. Sometimes embarrassing to say we can’t go out to dinner with you because we can’t afford it. No, we can’t even go camping because we can’t afford the supplies. No, sorry we can’t pitch in for an house at the beach for a weekend. But we chose our kids futures. Not sorry. Would do it 1,000 times over again!

Was forwarding a couple pkgs to our youngest two children (Irish twins) at a mail place yesterday. The lady next to me heard me tell the attendant that the first was going to a military DPO box, and she struck up a conversation.

Related how they were both overachievers (son a Marine, his younger sister a grad assistant NCAA Div. 2 volleyball coach.)

These two are the perfect example of iron sharpening iron. In the same grade from start to finish, and they had a lifelong experience of friendly one-upsmanship.

All 4 of my adult children are outstanding leaders. I did little to deserve this - constantly working - except to make sure they were raised in a Traditional Catholic home where we prayed the Rosary and never missed Mass.

Daughter was on her way back home after Christmas break and got stranded overnight in Denver. Waiting on a hotel shuttle after midnight, the crowd rushed it and it was filled nearly instantly. My daughter and another traveler held back to wait on a later shuttle.

Then an elderly couple showed up in the frigid darkness. The man had a cane.

Daughter jumped on the about-to-depart shuttle and announced "Listen up! There's an elderly couple here that needs to catch *this* bus. I need two people to give up their seats for them."

4 people volunteered.

They were brutal during Covid! My husband’s work threatened mandates multiple times but their internal polls showed over half their workforce would walk, effectively shutting them down, plus their lawyers saw the writing on the wall early and advised them not to put anything in writing about mandating the shots. But the leaders and managers still pushed them and threatened about them so much that some of my husbands coworkers got the shots despite misgivings and are seriously injured now. I am sorry, but Biden was a show for us and a joke. Anyone who believes it needs to look back at his shenenigans and different faces and ponder what that means.

His more edgy speech was a few days earlier where he totally dissed the H-1B visa invaders.

Unlike Trump and Elon who still support the program. DeSantis actually clarified how destructive it is for American workers and our society being replaced by third worlders.

Fred,

Contrary to popular propaganda, the problem isn’t a lack of qualified American workers. Studies have shown American students outperforming foreigners. I don’t have an immediate link, but remember reading about it.

The real problem is corporations want to pay third-worlders lower wages while forcing them to also work longer hours.

Expand full comment
Ransom Stoddard's avatar

All guest worker programs whether they are for picking crops or cranking out code are immoral as they exist solely for the purpose of importing second class, quasi-slave laborers. If American companies really need trained employees, they should train Americans, not as a handout but as a business deal.

Expand full comment
My Favorite Things's avatar

Ransom,

Exactly! Corporations should be required to pay foreign workers the same wages and have them work the same hours as American workers. That would solve the problem. We are allowing working conditions which are close to slavery here in America. We’re not as bad as China where slaves are locked in jail cells each night to produce cheap goods, but we’re not that far off either.

Expand full comment
Ransom Stoddard's avatar

Why? Americans do not exist to staff corporations. American corporations exist to provide goods and services as well as opportunities for Americans. Bringing in "guest workers" harms our people and our country and I don't see how, as a practical matter, you can require corporations who hire people as second-class workers to treat them in practice as anything but second class workers, which by definition and by the law, they are.

Expand full comment
My Favorite Things's avatar

Ransom,

Why? Because if corporations had to follow the laws and wages applicable to American workers, they wouldn’t hire foreign workers. Foreign workers would no longer be legally treated as second-class workers.

BTW: Most corporations cannot provide goods and services without workers.

Michigan has a brisk summer tourist industry, including hotels and small businesses on islands only habitable in the summer. They cannot find interested Americans to fill these positions. But many Jamaicans and folks from poor countries eagerly desire these positions, in order to send money home to their folks. Why not have temporary visas for them?

Expand full comment
Susanna Bythesea's avatar

But I would question first: WHY don’t Americans want to fill those positions? Why not actually make them appealing to Americans? What are the wages, how are workers being treated, is it being marketed to Americans? We need to stop saying “Americans don’t want to do [X] job” and leave it at that - we need to question WHY don’t Americans want to do this job and how can we address that situation?

Expand full comment
MaryAnn's avatar

The issue is the employment is seasonal but bills/needing food/shelter are year-round. Those who will work seasonal employment either have another source of income (pension, SS) or are a take-what-is-available person.

I worked a summer with migrant workers from Mexico. They were glad to return home when the field work was finished.

Expand full comment
Susanna Bythesea's avatar

I can see that point but I worked seasonal jobs throughout high school and college and sometimes between semesters - are college students still working or do they expect to take on a huge amount of debt and then get it forgiven? My dad used to do incredibly hard work on his family dairy farm as a teen, are families no longer raising their own kids to help out in the family businesses, even when the hours are long and the tasks are challenging? Knowing that accomplishing those difficult tasks for a common family purpose will strengthen and build character and work ethic in their young adults? I know there will always be myriad reasons for every situation but just wondering if there’s a course correct we can take as a culture.

Even though he was extremely engaged and effective, he had to step down after one very successful and well-respected term because he needed to get back to running his small business. It is sometimes frustrating that most average people can’t afford to run for office, BUT the flip side of that is that someone with less money who wants to impact their community can definitely start very local and if they are successful and well-respected they may gain patrons and increase their business and fiscal options so they are later able to run for higher office. It’s just tricky to keep from being “owned” by one’s donors, something my dad would never accept. So he went back to his primary job. Politics is a tricky field in many ways.

Turn it on its head.

I used to love it when people would scream at me for being "anti-mask".

I'd say no, I'm just "pro-face".

Haha! Pro-face! or pro-smile...I remember people telling me (who wore masks) that "smiles are free". Nope - thanks to you not really, but ok...my smile is "free" for everyone else, thanks to the social tax I pay...but I digress. Gonna use pro-face very soon. Make faces great again!

Can I get a prayer request?

One of my subordinates requested time off to take his daughter to Cali for an abortion. They’re flying out today.

Please pray their minds are changed and hearts brought to the lord so the baby has a chance at life.

It’s really broken my heart lately. Abortion is absolutely evil.

Praying...Such a tragedy. Such a loss. So many couples out there who would love to have children but cannot and others just throw that life away. May God touch their hearts and change their minds. Amen.

It’s evil.

Abortion chops up and kills the image of God in who we are made in a likeness of.

He’s fallen for the Covid shot scam jn the past so I have to say I expected it.

He’s a grandpa and he doesn’t know it :(

I drive by a house with not one but two roadside signs bleating “Abortion IS healthcare”. I’d love to replace the last word with a slap on “Murder” edit. If it was on a quiet sidewalk I would do that during the night under certain criteria but they are on a rural state highway.

There's a pending ban on TikTok, so the libs are bailing to a Chinese app, RedNote, which has propelled it to #1 in the app store.

Funny thing is the Chinese are conservative and the registration requires you to pick from only 2 genders, and bans lbgt and other nonsense.

Surprised the libtards are not all flocking to BlueSky, which raises a protective shield over its members that guards them from exposure to hateful *differing* opinions and facts.

I was watching tiktok last night and Ian Carrol was giddy with mirh while talking about the Exodus of Americans from tiktok to red note. Turns out we have been so propogandized re: Chinese nationals that they see us as being prisoners in an Oligarchical society where we (the citizens) are merely units of production of a grand corporation that is ruled by the rich! Oh and they say our legislature is garbage and controls us every which way from Sunday to have NO freedom (like we think). Quite fascinating and eye opening. I guess tiktok is voluntarily withdrawing from the US by Sunday so they don't have to proceed with the court process. Crazy times!

Here's a review.

https://www.pocket-lint.com/rednote-tiktok-alternative-app/

"I'll admit, I still need to use more of RedNote, but it does vaguely feel like TikTok. Some of the features are familiar, but the language barriers and missing context makes it hard to fully make the switch."

I believe we need a weekend of prayer just like we all did for the election. Every chance we get a second to drop to our knees and ask for God’s protection over our country and Trump on Monday.

But something tells me that’s the last day the corrupt would choose to take him out. I feel like they would instead aim for sometime in the first week or month, knowing we’d expect Inauguration Day.

Regardless, let’s pray without ceasing for the next four days for the protection over him, his family, the VP, the cabinet and appointees, and everyone surrounding Trump this coming weekend and week.
