“..but I know the disease doesn’t actually come from fish. It comes from Nutella.” 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Nancy Benedict's avatar

The people who didn't get the salmon joke must be new readers, Jeff. Maybe some democrats are now reading your Substack! You know how humorless they can be, bless their hearts.

Sara A's avatar

Seriously. It was such an obvious joke that it qualifies as a dad joke. I propose readers pass a sense of humor test before commenting.

M and L Borich's avatar

That’s what our now grown sons tell us…ugh, Dad!

KC & the Sunshine's avatar

Nancy, I love the “… bless their hearts” part. You must be from the south as well?

Nancy Benedict's avatar

Yep. My mother was a dear kind Christian woman who wouldn't say anything bad about anyone. But I heard "bless his/her heart" a lot.

When I say it I mean it. If I don’t mean it I say something else. 😂😉🔥

Doug's avatar

Au contraire, Nancy.. I've been here for over a year and I get most of Jeff's subtle jokes. Even though I thought he was probably joking yesterday, his usually-masterful delivery was a little off, so I wasn't quite sure. It made me do the research. Also, with all the crazy stuff they put into livestock feed, it wasn't a stretch to believe that some salmon virus had been introduced into the domesticated fowl population.

INGRID C DURDEN's avatar

yes - I was thinking along the Crispr lines... remember the mad cow disease they told us (back in Europe) evolved from feeding cows... Cows! they made the poor beasts into headhunters!

Sometimes we have them over for a Sam and Janet evening!

Excuse me, I am a Portland Native. The destruction of the city was done by outsiders. I got the joke right away. I also appreciated the reference to Nutella. I eliminated that from my kitchen decades ago.

Carol Brizzolara's avatar

What was it Rush used to say, “For those from Loma Linda…!!!”

CMCM's avatar

Rush actually made a lot of references to Rio Linda, a rural and low information area near Sacramento CA. He was originally broadcasting out of Sacramento and wasn't national, so we listeners in the Sacramento Valley areas knew exactly what Rush meant!

Juju's avatar

I’ve even had blood tests misread because of my supplements interfering with the results. For instance, you want to stop all B7 a week before any blood test. There are clinically significant errors with TSH and PTH because of the biotin. There are other examples out there of other supplements skewing results, that’s just one.

I have a habit now of stopping most my supplements at least 4 days before any test just to be sure and I withhold any vitamin that has B7 for a week.

AngelaK's avatar

Why don't they tell you all this before a test? Infuriating and stupid medical care is what it is. I had some specialized tests done once, and a high level of arsenic was found! I didn't feel poisoned. 😉I didn't suspect my husband, lol. 😉So I quickly searched Dr. Google who said that eating seafood in the preceding days could be the culprit. I then told the specialist at our next visit, who said, yes, you are right, that is probably it.

Why didn't the lab (Quest Diagnostics) give me some guidelines before the test.

My annoyance can go on and on. and if not for my own research on google before tests, before taking medication, etc. who knows if I would be here right now!

Fred's avatar

100% understand your annoyance (and love your humor!), but the labs do put out pre-test instructions, like the one you mentioned. Sad that you have to do your own research. Whether or not your state allows use of walkinlab.com, search your test and read the “sample report” and patient instructions on LabCorp side. Very helpful. (P.S. LabCorp tests are immeasurably more expensive than the same LabCorp tests ordered through walkinlab, a “middle man.” Go figure.)

AngelaK's avatar

They did not for me. Except for fasting before hand, nothing else.

And don't get me started on the garbage pre test instructions I got for my colonoscopy. Again, Dr. Google to the rescue. My prep did not include any electrolytes. It did not state that on their information insert.. I had to research myself, and bought the appropriate liquids. Even my doctor made a mistake by telling me that it did. (Other preps do, but the prep I was prescribed did not).

As I said, the list of incompetence can go on and on.

Thank God I love Google researching.

Fred's avatar

My last comment refers to lab you order and pay for yourself, not through your insurance.

Janet's avatar

I didn’t get any. Quest.

KC & the Sunshine's avatar

I feel this on so many levels. THINK how much effort and $$ it would save if they simply told people when scheduling the tests and then hung a huge poster on the wall saying that! But why be efficient and helpful when you can just go through the motions?

ItsMeAgain's avatar

Quest Diagnostics is the worst!

Brenda Bergsma's avatar

Because most of them DON'T KNOW!

Janet's avatar

Quest tells you nothing. Up to prescribing doctor. You can order your own but no info given. Heck, you can’t even get a human on the phone.

Jamie's avatar

Thanks for the reminder, I no longer check my labs, but if I ever do again, I will think of you.

I figured getting it done every month (sometimes more) for 30 yrs was enough 😂

Nancy Benedict's avatar

Most of us have increased our intake of supplements and this is a likely result. Thanks for the reminder!

PermieGeek's avatar

My Favorite Things's avatar

Thank you for sharing this information. I’m sure many aren’t aware that supplements can affect blood tests.

Susan Clack's avatar

Indeed, biotin can skew results. I had no idea about this until recently when my 90 yr old mother had to go in for a blood panel and the Lab Maven asked if she was taking biotin, and if so, to cease & desist those supplements for several days. She went back and checked and ALL of her supplements she was taking had biotin! Like 3 or 4! We were gobsmacked. So now she knows...but it took this long to find out? Ridiculous!

AngelaK's avatar

I never heard this or knew this. My lab results have been fine so far. but thank you for the future blood tests.

Befferz's avatar

Thank you for confirming a timeframe I should refrain as I believe my current bloodwork issue is just this (elevated THS out of nowhere).

Janet's avatar

Although I’m feeling better with the thyroid hormone I get from Mexico—certified ok I will stop it before my next test. It will suppress my THS and she will go apeshit. Thyroid should be judged by sign and symptoms—not necessarily the numbers.

PamelaZelie's avatar

What thyroid hormone do you get from Mexico? And from what pharmacy?

Curious … I have hypothyroidism.

Janet's avatar

I get T3. The only active thyroid hormone. T4 needs to be converted to T3 for relief and many have low conversion rates so T4 is useless for many. You have to start very low like 1-3 micrograms and build up slowly. I get it from Farmacia Del ninos online. There is a Dr for authorization and you can pay safely by several methods. I pay with a bank money order sent to a USA address. The $clears and then the item is shipped from USA after it’s sent from Mexico. It takes a few weeks but reliable and has English chat line and email notifications and tracking. There is online and YouTube advice from other thyroid folks but I think they don’t stress the point you have to take T3 very slow in divided doses and with food. I over did it and it caused some problems but the minute I dropped down they went away. I’m still building up to find my correct dose. But benefits now are more energy. Better mood and my temp is up showing my metabolism is improving. It was damaged by low carb keto for too long and ended I up undereating to a great extent and not getting the glucose and fuel needed to operate fully. Good luck. I have hashimotos. The drug is Cynomel.

Ellen's avatar

thank you that is good advice. I also get TSH and PTH tested a few times a year.

Trish's avatar

Great advice, thanks!

Janet's avatar

I’m doing that too. Since most docs are clueless about real thyroid treatment and behind the times. (I’m not letting specialists off the hook either) I get what I really need from Mexico cause my doc won’t Rx it. They are so focused on ranges and numbers they don’t even hear how utterly crap the patient feels. That is especially true for hypothyroidism. The comment boards are filled with suffering mostly women who probably need more T3 with the T4. I just bypassed all that nonsense and did my own research and joined a group. Doing much much better. Plus these tests are a snapshot in one day. Told my functional med doc I’m only getting them once a year now. They act like every thing off range must be met with a supplement or treatment so frankly I’m a little off my functional med doc. Very expensive too.

Doug's avatar

My wife, who is vegetarian and weighs about 90 pounds soaking wet, eats one meal a day and dances several days a week got one test showing elevated blood sugar and has been labeled "pre-diabetic" for several years, even though she never tested high before or since. Now every doctor sees that in her chart and weighs that when offering prescriptions or treatments.

She recently consulted with an honest doctor (!) who explained that the system is designed to encourage coding for conditions, because it means $$$ for the system the more codes they can apply to patients - whether the codes are valid or not. And she has asked repeatedly to get that one result eliminated from her chart to no avail - once they code you, it's permanent, accurate or not.

We need to figure out how to remove the profit motive from medicine - maybe by removing giant insurance companies from the patient-doctor relationship? I'm so tired of dealing with middlemen for everything.

A physician told me when I wanted to get off a low dose BP med because my BP was in “normal” range, said I would always have hypertension on my record. He wanted me to keep taking it as it was “harmless” and would give my kidneys protection. Protection from what, in case I get diabetes. He also wanted me to have all the screening tests, bone density, mammo, scopes, I said why, I am not treating them so why spend money for testing. I was told insurance covered them! Then he said it was my choice, but his duty to inform me. I thanked him. Haven’t been back.

AngelaK's avatar

I rejected scopes fir a decade. Finally had one because of a cologuard false positive. It was nothing, 123, and I was home. Prep was also not as dreaded as I expected.

Fortunately, I was not working at the time, so had the luxury of a few days to mentally and physically prepare (low fiber diet for 2 days).

I am thrilled that I finally did it at 66. All my conscious and subconscious worries have been put to rest. I am good to go for 10 years.

When I was 13, my grandfather was diagnosed with it, had surgery and a colostomy. and the horribleness of those memories have always haunted me.

Fred's avatar

In fairness, even the asymptotic can have objective criteria for COPD. In cases where there are amenable factors, it’s worth knowing.

Rosalind McGill's avatar

I heard years ago that my doctors for autoimmune issues were encouraged to have me on a minimum of 3 prescriptions. To “ manage “ it. I didn’t get an answer when I asked my psychiatrist.( because they love to label mental health issues that they created! Only reason I was depressed because all the gaslighting by insurance dictated doctors. Got an integrative medicine doctor about 7 years ago, Thank God.

My mom had melanoma for 11 years before it finally got her. Toward the end she was taking a galaxy of daily medications, some to control side effects of others - it was unbelievable. One day I asked her, "mom, what if you just stopped taking all of this crap?" - but she was so dominated by fear and brainwashed by big pharma and her doctors, she couldn't even entertain the idea. I will never do that shit.

Fre'd Bennett, MAHA's avatar

That's exactly what my RN wife decided to do. (I'd already done the same thing years before.)

About a year+ later, she's off ALL pharmaceuticals (including multiple SSRIs) and her much younger colleagues have nicknamed her "Guns" in reference to her taut, fit body.

rolandttg's avatar

We don't even take aspirin or Tylenol anymore.

Fre'd Bennett, MAHA's avatar

I think that's very wise.

Acetaminophen (TYLENOL) is especially dangerous. And aspirin overdosing is what killed most people during the Spanish flu epidemic.

I will say that aspirin may be helpful to thin out blood for clot victims though. I survived a pulmonary embolism ca. 2006, and aspirin was very helpful in preventing future clot formation.

AngelaK's avatar

I cannot tolerate even a moderate headache. I get nauseous. I can't run to the tylenol fast enough.

Sheri's avatar

How did she get off of SSRI? I want to do this but I've taken them 30 years! My doc just says, do half for a week, then half of that. Viola! No, I believe I would have more difficulty doing that, from what I have read online.

Fre'd Bennett, MAHA's avatar

It wasn't easy. She started by very gradually lengthening the time between doses, then eventually taking smaller ones.

It was hell for a long time, and there were times when I wished she would just go back on them.

But we persisted and over about 8 months or so it got better.

I highly recommend seeking professional guidance. Remember that she was an RN with nearly 25 yrs experience when she started.

Ellen's avatar

Me too, just came back from mine. I love him, and plus we spend the whole hour talking C&C type talk, who would have guessed! I always feel a LOT better after seeing him physically and mentally. :)

Juju's avatar

And keep in mind that MANY labs report normal ranges for a healthy 20-30 year old. At age 55 my PTH was too high, but the test placed me in the normal green bar because my levels were high end of normal for a 20 year old. (88) But at age 55, the high end of normal is 65! So I was way over. The specialists only glance down a normal range indicator and never questioned it. For a year they ignored my cries that I had hyperparathyroidism and said “no your blood tests are normal”. So I remained sick. Turned out I had three tumors in my neck that had to be removed by better surgeons who knew the abnormal ranges for my age and saw the blood test errors.

Fred's avatar

Good point! Doctors also routinely call borderline high TSH levels ‘normal’ and high A1C levels acceptable. Do your own research.

Janet's avatar

Exactly!! Lots of bad doctoring with thyroid problems.

rolandttg's avatar

Find a functional medicine Dr. Code for a holistic Dr. And I don't care where they are . Go. For almost 20 years, we drove 165 miles each way to our doctors and dentists after moving to the country. If you need a Dr. you need one who knows what they are doing, not the closest Dr,.

I can only imagine the crazy conclusions they jump to for erroneous lab results!

Dianne Denson's avatar

The medical community is beyond useless! Such a sad state of affairs.

Janet's avatar

In some special cases prison may help to get the system more honest. Do we have enough prisons?

Copernicus's avatar

YES!

When receiving a puzzling, doesn't make sense with the rest of the picture lab result, the first response should be to repeat the test.

Glad Dad is doing well!

Alan Devincentis's avatar

It’s because of the imbeciles that hospitals hire thanks to diversity. I’m sure of it. From a guy with a blood disorder and a bride with a blood cancer. We do blood tests. Constantly.

Copernicus's avatar

Well, it's not always due to diversity. I am aware of a couple of instances from years ago. A simple remeasure would have avoided lots of expensive tests.

I rarely Google medical information. Don’t trust most of the sources. Somehow more reliable info comes my way. Sometimes through you good folks on CnC.

Lisa Ca's avatar

Yeup. Many blood tests are wrong. They thought my brother, not 50, had failing kidneys and needed to be hospitalized but ooops, sorry, blood test was wrong. You are fine.

SJacob1957's avatar

Same thing happened to my father. After waiting four agonizing hours in the ER with a 90-year-old, because his potassium levels were so high that he was going to die before morning, they told us oops never mind you’re fine. Go home.😡

Sunny's avatar

Seriously??? How hard can it be? Check bracelet. Write name on tube. Run test & report to name on tube. As Jeff might say, “It’s not rocket science.”

Fred's avatar

Actually, if the blood breaks down (hemolysis), the potassium level will be falsely elevated. Labs usually decline to run tests on a hemolyzed specimen. There are degrees however, and they’re required to report “alarm” levels. Shouldn’t always require an ED visit though.

Lisa Ca's avatar

So disgusting right?😢

MS's avatar

Yes! Years ago we had to take our toddler to the ER after we found him chewing on some rat poison (picky little guy wouldn't eat anything healthy, but rat poison, sure). We thought we caught it in time (before he could swallow any of it) but took him to the ER just to be sure. Rat poison works by thinning the blood, so they drew blood to test it. They come back with dour news that he needs to be started on vitamin K immediately (counters the blood thinning effect). Something didn't sit right with me and I asked them based on the blood results how much do they think he consumed. They said it must've been quite a bit. That didn't make sense so I insisted they take the blood test again. 45 minutes later they come out and sheepishly say the blood is normal and the first time must've been a mistake. Phewwwww! That was the first (of many) incident that taught me not to blindly trust the medical system and to always, always question things if something doesn't feel right.

Fred's avatar

Your point is well taken! Ask questions. The blood thinning effect from the old poisons (coumarin) isn’t that quick, so if they’d thought about it…

Tio Nico's avatar

wth all these ales bove aobut bad lb results I wonder whether they don't just throw darts at the wall then write down those numbers. Seems i would be about as accurate......

Haven't been to a doc for some time (teo, threee years? Yippee) but it seems every time my plood pressure reading is "high". One time my doc sid w might have to sart DOING something about my "high blood pressure". At thattime I was seriously putting miles on my road bike.. a few thousand road miles a year. Restiing heart rate was emthing like 34, bu I could sprint hard and dun it up to 188, and when I'd back off it would fall like a stone back t a steady 145 or so, sill working.

So the doc made her remark and I said maybe wating a bit to take the BP might help... puzzled look. I have been sitting in the waiting room for some time, reading, then get up, walk down the hall i to this room sit down, and the cuff is on my arm before I am settled into the chair. (worse ye are these silly little toys that clamp round the wrist and are all automatic). Gone are the days of the TECHNICIAN using the stethoscope and sowly releasing the pressure from the cuff. Its all a well choreogrpahed dance. I moslty ignore all the carping about "your blood pressure". Yes, I have some. I like it. I works.

Janet's avatar

Yeah. I’ve been sucked up into the BP merry go round before. My blood pressure was considered normal just a few years ago. I’m 76. I do not need the blood pressure of a 20 yr old Plus trying to get it there with increasing meds is actually more dangerous. I have white coat issue so it’s normal at home I take an extra pill before I go so it reads better. I’m only on a tiny dose anyway. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Especially the blood counts, because the tube contains a liquid anticoagulant, and if the tube isn’t filled properly, it dilutes remainder. Since he had no obvious bleeding, and if his hemoglobin hadn’t been so low, they might have suggested having a stat redraw as an outpatient instead of a costly (and if I may add, not entirely safe) ED visit.

My MIL had a thyroid biopsy. Was invasive. Not enough cells were taken. I asked her if she was going to ask for a refund- since her procedure was defective.

It’s always good to get that out of the way right off so you’re not gobsmacked by it later I guess. I’m perfectly happy to have acquaintances who vote blue no matter who but don’t really want to spend much quality time with them (unless they are family and then you’re forced to not talk politics which isn’t a bad thing either).

It's been bizarre to me how much the parties have shifted. In the 90s someone like James O'Keefe would likely have been supported by the left and called anti-American or a communist. Now exposing corruption is almost always supported primarily by the right and they are called far right Nazis. My head hasn't completely stopped spinning even years after first seeing this shift,

My younger sister was an ardent liberal who thought Obummer walked on water and would make changes she could believe... Then of course, in 2016 voted for Killary...

Was I shocked when she finally WOKE UP and SAW all the great policies Trump had implemented in his short 4 year term.... She even apologized to me for all the name calling..

That’s wonderful. I so wish my sister would also wake up. I keep hoping.

I'm relieved Jeff's dad is doing better. All that blood chemistry discussion reminds me of how the 'ivermectin guys' talk about pH levels and other factors that are out of wack for most of us. For example, many of us are actually suffering from parasites in our gut (solved with an IVM/fenben protocol). Drinking water with lemons is a good way to get your pH balanced.

Barbara ( Portlander😵‍💫)'s avatar

Would a lemon drop a day be the same as lemon water 😬

Laura Barrett's avatar

I’m a big fan of a good lemon drop and as I live less then two hours north of you, we could meet up and taste test to determine what is the best lemon drop recipe.

Would you happen to have this protocol handy by any chance???

I’d be interested to see the protocol you have. I’m using iver rand want to add fenben and am struggling to find parasite protocol dosing.

Reading the answered prayer request for Jeff's dad is moving me to ask for my own today.

My spouse has a chronic health condition that over the last 6-8 weeks, and particularly the last few days. appears to be worsening after being more or less mostly stable. It's really concerning. Conventional dr has nothing else to offer except more drugs that won't be tolerated by my spouse (and, frankly, I wonder if they don't make the whole thing worse over the long haul). Spouse is doing all the right things with diet and supplements. I'm very proud of them.

Despite being older than most parents of middle school kids, we are not fossils; and yet the pace and capacity in some parts of our lives has become akin at times to that of those decades older than we. It's been a very hard last few years.

So I would appreciate prayers for their healing, both whatever is going on acutely as well as, if God should be willing, more complete healing altogether. But right now, especially the acute worsening.

We have a really good functional med alternative dr who has helped me tremendously. My spouse, understandably, feels anxious about anyone messing with their carefully titrated supplements, so they have not sought this person's help for that. So yeah, that is on our radar, to preclude any suggestions for that.

Thanks.

Bones's avatar

We will pray. Meanwhile, pull up a bunch of healing scriptures and have your spouse speak them aloud frequently you can do the same.

It’s amazing to see C&Cers encouraging and supporting each other. One of W. Clement Stone’s affirmations was, “I feel healthy! I feel happy! I feel terrific!” Saturate in the Word and positive self-talk and believe with all your heart. Practice makes perfect. “Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them” (Mark 11:23).

Not knowing what the condition is, here are a few things that help many conditions:

-Low dose naltrexone

-Monolauin granules

-Black seed oil (the most powerful I know of is this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0BYG3GFN1?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title)

Truly, these items are all worth looking into.

When Yeshua went through the Temptation in the Wilderness, and the enemy twisted Scripture, He replied

“ It. Is. Written”

This is how we should pray. Our prayers should be “It is written”. And then into the ether we should speak His Word. Here is a healing Scripture to read over your Lives.

Isaiah 53

‘Who has believed our report?

To whom is the arm of Adonai revealed?

For He grew up before Him like a tender shoot, like a root out of dry ground.

He had no form or majesty that we should look at Him,nor beauty that we should desire Him.

He was despised and rejected by men,

a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief,

One from whom people hide their faces.

He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.

Surely He has borne our griefs

and carried our pains.

Yet we esteemed Him stricken,

struck by God, and afflicted.

But He was pierced[d] because of our transgressions,

crushed because of our iniquities.

The chastisement for our shalom was upon Him,

and by His stripes we are healed.

Trump can do wonders with tax cuts if we do away with a significant number of our bloated government entities such as Education, Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, to name a few.

Juju's avatar

I love Trump’s tax plan. Not mentioned is that if we aren’t sending billions to Ukraine and funding billions into illegal immigrants, we will get immediate relief to pay for the tax plan and then the economy takes care of the rest.

rolandttg's avatar

He needs to do one more thing. Make the tax rate a flat 50 % if you vote for demonrats, and 10 % if you don't. They want all this spending to fund wars, invaders, and lay abouts, so let them pay for it.

I guess that could be the least of my worries if it’s as bad as they are forecasting. (We are on the outskirts of the storm, for now, but likely to get tornados and bad flooding 😔)

Thinking of all those in the most direct path of Helene. Stay strong, stay brave!

Often the heavy whipping cream is still there. Grab that. I only use that now for everything - but then I’m low carb too so. But it offers everything milk does but better and if necessary can be watered down.

Kathleen Janoski's avatar

The shelf stable milk was a life saver for me during the plandemic...along with having powdered milk.

Susanna Bythesea's avatar

We do local raw milk (yum!) and usually keep some in our freezer for back up as needed but this week happened to be when we ran out and of course the deliveries to our health food stores are delayed because of the storm. Thankfully, milk is not the most essential part of our diet in the short-term.

Kathleen Janoski's avatar

Thanks for the link...I will stick with the powdered milk in a pinch.

Karmy's avatar

Yeah I was shocked when I read this article. Everything seems to be false now. Fake food too. Yikes.

After a hurricane when Jeb was governor FEMA was giving out ice. We had no power so I lined up to get ice. It came with 2 cases of water, labeled water. Made by Anheiser Bush.

Double Mc's avatar

Better than powdered milk if you can find it is freeze dried. When reconstituted, it tastes exactly like milk. Same for eggs.

Renee Sommers's avatar

I think it does. I like the cartons because I don’t have to dig out the powdered milk and mix it up when I only need a cup. Which reminds me I need to clean out my pantry. 🤣

It turns into a hard brick after a few years. I buy powdered whole milk, then use a vacuum sealer with one of those silicone dehydrator thingys in the bag. It’s been 4 years and it still seems okay. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yes, I agree. I am SO sick of watching that little criminal steal from us. I used to want to throw the remote when I saw him hugging Nancy Pelosi and they put together another package of our stolen money. I can't stand that country at this point. And our politicians partake in the grift because as long as they go along with it, they get their little kickbacks. Scumbags, all of them.
