“ Masks hinder communication, fog glasses and can be uncomfortable”

Oh. By what process do they fog glasses? By large volumes of air passing around the edges of the mask?

High school physics students (at least those of 20 years ago who weren’t preoccupied with applying pronouns) know that the filtration efficiency of a material is proportional to the pressure drop across it. Which means that better filters are more prone to leaks around the periphery. Most masks leak, badly. The filtration efficacy drops to zero where leaks comprise around 3% of the surface area of the mask.

Expand full comment

EXACTLY!!!

Every glasses-wearing person WHO STILL THINKS should know this. I’ve been saying it all along. It’s SO DUMB.

And as if fogging glasses is even the biggest issue. These people act like we are all a bunch of kindergarten students needing kindergarten instruction. 🙄🙄🙄

And it makes me feel so safe when my pilots are wearing masks! (said sarcastically).

Pilots have stated that wearing masks fogs their glasses, makes it difficult to smell smoke (helpful if there's a fire), and makes it difficult to access their crew (harder to smell alcohol on breath, etc).

Expand full comment

FYI - pilots did not wear these silly masks once the cockpit door closed. For the same reason they are not permitted to have facial hair. The fancy emergency oxygen masks they wear in the event of depressurization will not fit properly and removing a paper mask takes precious seconds. The is per relative who is an ATP.

That glasses fog is visible evidence proving that masks are worthless at protecting against the transmission of aerosols!

I never wore a mask to the dentist even way back. I realized exactly how stupid that was to wear a mask only to sit with your mouth wide open for 30+ minutes. They did the questions/temp checks, but now it's mostly business as usual. Maybe a little more "protective" gear for the people doing the actual work, but that's about it. They also realized that the multiple masks+shields they were wearing were causing them to be lightheaded, but ... that was part of the state-level rules for them to be open back then. They were relaxed after ~ 3 months, but they were still pretty strict to start.

It's even more basic than that. The assumptions made are 1. masks kill germs 2. masks are worn 24/7. But masks actually collect and breed germs giving all kinds of skin and respiratory problems (but they won't collect this data).

Furthermore, their model is treating viruses like radiation. They claim that there is a constant substantial viral spread present in every school, like you enter a classroom and there is a cloud suspended there. But they don't even measure viral spread, they take PCR test results with 97% false positives. You can't prevent false positives by covering your face! Build fake models, get fake results, claim fake effects. We're stuck in this "do masks work" while the question is "are they needed?". It's like requiring to wear seatbelts in a classroom, why not.

Expand full comment

I thought the assumption was that masks _blocked_ germs, not killed them. I have happily never encountered anyone who thought masks killed germs. My faith in humanity is shaken enough without that as well. ;)

Jun 1, 2022·edited Jun 1, 2022

It's not what they say but the underlying assumption they don't realize. Like, once germs reach the mask they magically disappear rather than getting collected on the mask and spread with hands. In the beginning of 2020 there were studies how long covid stays alive on surfaces, it's days. I burned masks collected in the neighborhood (people don't bother with garbage bins), they're disgusting.

One of the better videos I saw on Youtube a while back was a guy showing cloth/paper/whatever masks standing outside breathing in cold weather. You could _see_ the air leaking all over the place. So yeah - masks may reduce the amount going straight out, but they just redirect all of that to the edges/sides.

(That said - I still like having a scarf to cover my face when it gets cold and windy, but even then I realize that they don't stop water vapor - they just help block the wind and keep me warmer.)

Reading about the cherry picking mask study is EXACTLY like reading about a guy named Ancel Keys and the cherry picking HE did decades ago in his attempt to prove that dietary cholesterol (and serum cholesterol) causes heart disease. Read The Big Fat Surprise by Nina Teicholz for further discussion. Anyway, he chose to include for his analysis only the countries whose data aligned with his foregone conclusions. Not to mention that his data was gathered in unreliable ways as it was... of COURSE the dietary recalls for folks finishing Lent are going to include less eggs and butter and such than is typical for their usual fare 🙄. When MORE countries with GREATER DIVERSITY of diet are included, his conclusions are shown for the scam that they were.

Sadly, we’re now in our third generation of folks being raised on high carb, low fat, veg oil-based diets. And just like masks have had their “unintended, unforeseen” consequences, so to have our dietary policies that are based on Keys’ work. Our soaring rates of diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity, and yes, even cancers, are thanks to Ancel Keys and his bully ways.

Also, the Lancet *is considered by many people* as a most prestigious journal. However, weren’t they the ones who published the fraudulent HCQ study with the fabricated data early in the pandemic? Or was that NEJM? I think it was Lancet. 🤔. It’s pretty sad that we can’t even trust the journals anymore. Although they too have probably been corrupted for far longer than we have realized.

I've also known about the Ancel Keys scam for at least 20 years, and I suspect that is where my skepticism about the medical research community began. And your comment on the HCQ is bang on - I'm currently reading "The Real Anthony Fauci" by Robert Kennedy Jr. and pages 29-31 cover that whole HCQ fiasco. It was both journals, the Lancet and the NEJM - quoting from the book on page 29, "It remains an enduring mystery just which powerful figure(s) caused the world's two most prestigious scientific journals, The Lancet and the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), to publish overtly fraudulent studies from a nonexistent database owned by a previously unknown company. Anthony Fauci and the vaccine cartel celebrated the Lancet and NEJM papers on May 22, 2020 as the final nail in the hydroxychloroquine coffin." Later on page 30 it goes on to say, "Both The Lancet and the NEJM finally withdrew their studies in shame." I suspect by the time they withdrew, the MSM had had their field day(s) with this story to the detriment of citizens around the world. As I'm reading your comment I felt like I was reading my own words - great minds think alike - I hope :) ... Thanks for sharing Copernicus, Cheers!

I need to point out that "succinctly" doesn't mean true, even by the New York Times lexicon. And saying that Russia "annexed" Crimea is leaving out that part where the people of Crimea, in an 89% turnout, voted 97% to be annexed to Russia. It's always framed as Russia aggressively taking over Crimea. Can't have people thinking self-determination had anything to do with it.

Expand full comment

Hmmm didn’t know about that vote!

Expand full comment

It's been done against procedures described in Ukrainian law, so it's technically annexation. And the number 97% is bogus, perhaps, more like 60-70%. Nevertheless, Crimea republic has been always a special separatist region with pro-Russia majority. They don't want to go back to Ukraine. Recognizing Crimea would've been the first step to de-escalation.

If you look at the map, it explain the reason for the annexation very well. Crimea is a strategic point for a military fleet, to access the Black sea. Prior to 2014 Russia had access to the Black Sea by renting a port in Crimea from friendly Ukraine. But when Ukraine changed course and started to talk about joining NATO, NATO would've gained this strategic point and Russia would've lost it. For the same reason Russia doesn't want Georgia to join NATO. If both of those countries join it, Russia loses access to the Black sea.

Ukraine already had a color revolution in 2004-2005, so saying that the events in 2014 were completely orchestrated by the US is bogus as well. More like the Ukrainian freedom movement was taken advantage of, it's all about money and power. And now Ukraine is taken advantage of to have a proxy war with Putin. I wonder if the agreement in 2021 was signed because Ukraine started to fall off the hook.

Seems everyone is terrified of everything; covid, gun grabs, Russia, perverted schools, inflation, crime, vaccine side effects, and on and on and on. Far too many people are "terrified" of everything. We mock the left and their triple masking, but how much better are we when we are "terrified" of the WEF?

Second, The NY Times article is again, wrong! Crimea was not a result of Russia's actions. It was a result of the 96% of the people in Crimea are Russian and had a referendum to join Russia to avoid being attacked. Ukraine is half German and half Russian. The Germans are controlling the Ukrainian gov now thanks to the US in 2014. The Germans want to attack the Russian people of Donbas, Lugansk, Mariupol, etc. in the east of "Ukraine."
