I believe Y2K would have been a disaster had there not been all the hype that got the programers in fix mode and indeed fixed it. Y2K prep was like fire insurance. You are not upset or mocked when your house doesn't burn down.

As a programmer, I can say that there certainly would have been major annoyances if it wasn't fixed (as a number of lazy businesses discovered) -- like say issuing payslips showing "your pay for the last -99 years, here's a check for negative $345,678" -- but the whole "planes falling out of the sky and similar" hype was never likely.
