I have been following the 'new Russia' in depth for quite a few years. Moscow and Petersburg are so, so different. Just bright cheerful, stores jammed full, a clean and neat look. Gone is that Soviet era drabness. It blow me away. And the 'new city' in Moscow with skyscrapers did not exist when I was there.
Also, people did not understand how much financial strength Russia has ... something like twenty percent sovereign debt to GDP, super-strong Ruble, excellent foreign exchange balance sheet, strong industrial base. And the Western fools thought they could take down the Federation with the sick man dollar system.
