About those fires... We need to connect the dots to all the fires over the last few years. Anyone remember the Lahaina Fire? Anyone watching the fires in Spain? Eerily similar.

My aunt nearly lost everything in the 2020 fires in Oregon. Every one of her neighbors did lose everything. She was the anomoly and eternally grateful as she was caring for my dementia laden grandmother in her home at the time.

No, they will sample everything and eat up everything they like. Also, most yard ornamental plants and bushes are toxic to goats. I had to take our entire herd to the vet, after one of the horses opened the gate to the backyard. I found all the goats munching on the rhododendron.
On the other hand, we lent the goats out to folks who needed to have brush and blackberries removed and they did a great job!
They need secure fencing, plenty of water, and they will go to town on the weeds, brush, blackberries, etc.

They love roses, etc. -- they also liked the bamboo shoots (spread from neighbor's yard - trying in vain to get rid of them) - but because the shoots are mostly between the apple trees and pear trees, which I was not trying to trim at this point, the goats only got to sample them before being herded back to the area they were hired to clear (yes, a bunch got out several times, but mostly took care of stuff that I was happy to get rid of, before the goat wranglers came and rounded them up).
They will eat the weeds and many flowers, bushes. They’ll also eat wicker/rattan furniture, the cushions thereof, and while eating the flowers, they’ll pull the flowers right out of the pots, allowing the super cute flowerpots to crash onto the stone porch, busting into smithereens. Goats are attracted to NOTHING more greatly than they are attracted to anything drooping or sticking out. Rattan furniture and flower flowers fit this bill.
After our goats cleaned up our poison ivy & briars, then ATE the pool polaris cords and every other cord on the property— we gave them to people who did this for a living.
PS It’s a heckuva way to find out your goats have a copper deficiency— having them EAT hundreds of dollars worth of electric cords!
My girlfriend hired a goat 🐐 lady. The goat 🐐 lady brought fences and fenced in the area to be cleaned up. Then she brought the adorable and very hungry 🐐 goats. In a couple of days the woods were all cleared up. It was very efficient and especially fun! 🐐

There was a big power line construction project in CA. They would fly a helicopter in to the work areas, fly workers back to port a potties miles away. They could not even leave orange peels, apple cores, nothing as it would upset the forest environment. This is how crazy it is.
While low humidity, along with wind, has been a factor in these fires spreading rapidly, I find that 17% number hard to believe, unless they mean the Alvord Desert and the Steens Mountain area, where these is much less fuel than further West along Hwy 395.

T H I S!!!!!! I have seen loads of photos of home after home burned completely to the ground, but shrubs and trees in the same yards that not only still stand, but some have foliage??!?!!!! That simply doesn’t make a lot of sense. How can a fire be so massively intense as to leave nothing but a littered foundation but leave trees and shrubs standing very closeby?????
It also makes me wonder at the wildfires out of Ontario that blanketed Michigan with toxic smoke in July for about 4 days caused by 100’s of boreal forest fires that were caused by lightning strikes. After a week the smoke was gone and not a word any longer about Ontario forest fires.
Were they lightening strikes? Fires in Canada have ramped up yearly if acres burned is any indication, yet during the Canadian COVID lockdowns they diminished significantly.
7 years ago when we visited the forests in Glacier National Park, there was a sadness for me in seeing how the forest was so old and majestic yet had a forlorn look like an old estate falling down. I wondered why some of the money supporting these parks didn't go toward cleaning the forest floor of natural debris. Volunteers could even do it.
Many trees we saw were afflicted with some sort of fungal disease, dying and being left. But there were also old exceedingly large and tall trees holding on well. I have mused on and off about what is the proper way to care for such forests ever since. Should they rotate gradually through and burn selected areas to start new growth? But then, what about how amazing it is to see such an old and unique kind of forest as those we saw there? All I know is that having a philosophy of truly taking care for the forests there would make a positive difference.
In California, the various environmentalist groups don't want us to touch, cut down or clean up anything in the forests. I guess they prefer all the dry debris on the forest floors. You can't make up their idiocy.

trees are just like people, they get old, rot from the inside, quit producing much benefit to the atmosphere. Then burn or fall down. I flew a logging helicopter in Alaska on "old growth" huge trees, lots were still good, but many hollow and rotten. When you looked to another unit that had been logged 20 years earlier, it was a different color of green, vibrant and growing. So, I think logging is a good thing.
There have been massive fires across this country since before white settlers arrived. There were no armies of forest floor cleaners. What can help these days as we move civilization ever further into forested areas, is the cutting down of smaller trees. Larger trees with high canopies and thick bark don't always burn down.
Someone pointed out, however, the proximity of the fire to contested land planned for a data center. Perhaps there's a connection.
THIS!! I was just reading an article in a local newspaper claiming that Washington State stopped prescribed burns for 15 years! This is not a new concept. They had been doing these burns since the early 1900's and it is wildfire/forest management 101. They only reinstated the burns in 2021. Over the last 20 years, the fires have become more intense and the air quality much worse for much longer. Washington, along with Oregon and California I would suspect, either stopped or greatly reduced the allocated acreage for prescribed burns. Now they are playing catchup and we will see the effects for many years. But hey, they can just blame it on climate change, right?

The CLUE is that no one is even attempting to explain these fires anymore as natural events. Why is that? Because it has become too obvious that they are not natural. These fires are man-made. So blame it on crazy people.
Seemed simplistic to me too. You can't get rid of ignition sources. Crazy people, irresponsible kids, lightening, machinery throwing sparks, campfires left smoldering. You are going to have ignition sources. Seems like the "root cause" (I hate that Kamala gave that phrase a bad rep) is the way the forests are managed, and development in areas that are prone to uncontrollable fires. It's understandable that when buildings are threatened we want to put fires out. But before we came on the scene, fires were allowed to burn, keeping fuel at a lower level, and creating natural fire breaks that meant today's mega-fires seldom if ever happened. We probably can't return to the days of "let them burn". But the result is predictable - much worse fires.
Here is what makes it hopeless. None of the past fires in Hawaii or the West Coast were investigated at a prosecutorial level. Why? All the evidence was there begging for attention: unnatural burn patterns, trees burned from the inside out, some things burned but others untouched, aluminum rims melted to liquid WITH NO NEARBY FIRE SOURCE, etc etc. But no investigation of such a massive community loss? (And not only combustion, but mass killings, random accidents, etc, etc) so getting these people who can't function in society out of society is a good for society, not to be minimalized.
Last fire season in Oregon, one forest fire was caused by PP&L's ill-maintained electrical transmission cables, and the other by a clueless teenage boy with a match.

Having spent many blissful weeks on my much beloved Maui, the Lahaina fire(s) still leave me taking my tinfoil hat on and off. So very many unusual factors…. The head of emergency services for Maui county was off island. The electricity was off, the water was off , and not one of the 80 emergency sirens on island apparently went off. The police seemed to be otherwise occupied until historic Lahaina town was literally an inferno with residents desperately trying to drive out of the dowtown district, with flames licking at their vehicles. Some of the videos I saw from people in their vehicles, terrified, were beyond imagination. How the fire stayed pretty much confined to the historic district without readily spreading seems odd to me. This I know, Dem guv Green had just announced he planned on Lahaina being a “15 minute city”. The whole thing just doesn’t add up in my strange little mind. What I know for certain is that so much history, so many homes that had been in families for generations, and a BUNCH of businesses are no more, gone in a massive fire that killed many. No warnings/sirens, no water, no electricity. And now, there are many questions of what exactly happened to the massive donations given afterward? One bright note is that Samaritans Purse has been there since soon afterward, and have remained there helping rebuild homes. 🙏

That would mean that one out of 100 people who got sick with covid (flu) died, which didn't happen, just as one in a hundred who get the flu every year don't die. Rather it was along the lines of .00043 % who died from, or with, "covid".
The CDC admitted the infection fatality rate (IFR) was 0.3% in May of 2020. That is similar to the Asian Flu of the late 50's and the Hong Kong Flu of the late 60's.
Most of the other researchers were citing lower numbers (0.25 etc) but even at 0.3% it was never a pandemic. All the subsequent variants were lower with Delta being 0.15-0.2%.
Basically 3 times worse than the yearly seasonal influenza. That claims about 50-60k a year so at most 180k would have died from covid in 2020 if the government did nothing. All deaths over 180,000 in 2020 were government intervention deaths.

I think it is the mismanagement of the forest, the lack of funding to real fire control, but also what you brought up here letting arsonists roam free. Ever since the 80s Washington state has been run by Democrats and now really progressive Democrats. I pray for election reform so that Washington can gain a sense of normalcy.

We live in chicken country in GA and have 45 of various breeds. We supply eggs to family and neighbors and also raise meat chickens. Yes, they are expensive to raise and require quite a bit of work to maintain but knowing where your food has come from and the quality of it makes it worth the effort. No roosters allowed....they will drive you crazy. 🐔

I am the most (or close) non-domestic woman maybe on the planet. I bake bread (machine) I knit (I get bored in meetings and watching TV- knit all the way through college, Scotland Yard Program, and the police academy. They had rules about no gum chewing, but not about knitting and nobody minded. I asked. Every. time.
My neighbor has chickens. She's not as off the charts atypical as me- she has kids. We talk "chickens" They have 8. I am the chicken sitter when they are gone. Chicken tender, if you will.
Their chicken poop graces my composter. I don't grow anything much, but I like the efficiency of composting. In fact I really hate all things lawn/gardening. I do them because, well they need doing. Just like cleaning toilets and cooking. We need the results.
I also play the bagpipes. When I was a girl, my mother (Marine Sgt in WWII and business exec when women didn't do that - SHE was atypical, but did stuff, too - Brownie leader and sort of cooked) asked me about "those men's shirts you wear." Polo shirts. "Mom, they are women's shirts the buttons are even on the opposite side." Then I went on to wear a police uniform. Male attire. One of the first women, but even then they had women's sizing and tailoring. Now, I wear a kilt....a LOT....we are a very busy service band. Women do NOT wear kilts. Women wear "kilted skirts." Why? because my formal kilt is 9 yards (origin of the whole 9 yards) of thick pleated wool. Not a flattering thing around one's hips, but neither was a gun belt...I digress. It is MALE attire, but I'm a piper. So, I wear a Piper's kilt. So, after all these years (28 years of piping) this little old lady is finally wearing a "skirt" and it is still male attire.
I have found that telling people with ridiculous ideas to "Get over it." works. I'm kind of blunt when I do it. I've found being direct is the best way to sort out the riff raff. "You are dismmissed. Go sit down."

Our kilts (we both pipe) were made on Cape Breton Island, NS. In a true kilt there is not ONE machine made stitch. All painstakingly done by hand. There is a long apprenticeship to becoming a kilt maker.
Somehow I manage to make people laugh. My life has been a huge adventure. And, in our world "adventure" means that if you don't do it right, you will end up injured or dead. I should be dead a few times, but did some planning and ducking.
I SO want to have bees. But, I had breast cancer and am high risk for lymphodema. Consequently, any break in that side's arm can be a medical emergency. I read that if you have bees, you will get stung. Rats. BUT- we have a big drought going here and a bird bath out front. Bees come for a drink. Some fall into the water. Without thinking, I scooped one out that was flogging around to put it on the edge. The bee seemed grateful. I've done this a bunch of times with the same result. So, I'm a "chicken tender" AND a "bee life saver." No mouth to mouth, thankfully. I don't have chickens. I trade my bread for eggs.
If you wore a bee suit, the chances of being stung approximate zero and that's only because you'd be messing around with their hive. If you leave it alone and never look inside or take honey from it, they won't bother you. We have 4 hives in the garden and mow around and weed whack around them but they don't care. My husband is a beekeeper and tells me that because he only uses Italian queens, the bees are particularly docile. I have a bee suit, but gave up wearing it. But they are great protection, just in case. The only time I've been stung was on top of my foot because I mowed over a nest of ground bees while wearing flip flops. Ground bees can sting multiple times whereas a honey bee can only sting you once and she will die. About your bird bath: we have one also, not far from the hive. We float a block of wood in the water and the bees can land on it without problem. They drink their water by sticking their proboscis inside the wood. You could also use a stone or even keep a piece of old carpet wet. I'm sure the bees you've rescued are grateful. My husband is so confident around bees (something they sense) that they walk all over his fingers and hands and arms and won't sting. Honestly, if you're interested, you should check into having bees. Having a hive is actually very relaxing since they do all the work.
I am going to think seriously about it now. We don't mow here in anything but decent shoes. Too many red ants and other critters.
I do have a couple of stone platforms and some shells that the bees use, but now and then, one will somehow go swimming. I think the ones that drink from the edge might be the ones to take a slide!
If I get into it, I might get one of the local beekeepers to come help out when it is time to harvest. I do believe they sense more things than we know. Horses and dogs are like that. I don't have horses, but when I see them, they come over to nuzzle. Has been that way since I was a kid. I'm not afraid of much of anything. We have one we see when we pipe police funerals. He LOVES the pipes.
Absolutely you should try a hive: make sure it's an Italian queen, that your hive opening faces East (for the morning sun), and having a local beekeeper come out in the late summer/early fall to gather some honey for you is a great idea! They truly do not like people or anyone else taking their stores they worked so hard to get. Bees are sentient animals and have good hearts. To encourage you, watch National Geographic's documentary "Secrets of the Bees." It's amazing. Oh, and should you get a hive, don't use anything plastic in it, including the frames which should be wired wax. Some people are into plastic and my husband is convinced it's toxic to his girls. My sister has 5 horses and you're right: they sense more than we know. All life is so amazing.

This has been happening in OR CA and Idaho WA for decades. Is it in purpose? You betchya!!! Other states have massive forests but don’t deal with this issue other than on occasion. So why the left coast? You stated it.
My aunt nearly lost everything in the 2020 fires in Oregon. Every one of her neighbors did lose everything. She was the anomoly and eternally grateful as she was caring for my dementia laden grandmother in her home at the time.
The PTB on the left coast refuse to clean up the forest floors which makes it super easy to ignite the whole thing. On purpose or by accident. They. Don’t. Care. Bottom line. More blood money for them and setting the stage for a CA and Lahaina type situation. Nobody will think twice at this point. (Oh…it happens every year. Stupid conspiracy theory people.)

No, they will sample everything and eat up everything they like. Also, most yard ornamental plants and bushes are toxic to goats. I had to take our entire herd to the vet, after one of the horses opened the gate to the backyard. I found all the goats munching on the rhododendron.
On the other hand, we lent the goats out to folks who needed to have brush and blackberries removed and they did a great job!
They need secure fencing, plenty of water, and they will go to town on the weeds, brush, blackberries, etc.

They eat most anything. They love roses, etc. -- they also liked the bamboo shoots (spread from neighbor's yard - trying in vain to get rid of them) - but because the shoots are mostly between the apple trees and pear trees, which I was not trying to trim at this point, the goats only got to sample them before being herded back to the area they were hired to clear (yes, a bunch got out several times, but mostly took care of stuff that I was happy to get rid of, before the goat wranglers came and rounded them up).
They will eat the weeds and many flowers, bushes. They’ll also eat wicker/rattan furniture, the cushions thereof, and while eating the flowers, they’ll pull the flowers right out of the pots, allowing the super cute flowerpots to crash onto the stone porch, busting into smithereens. Goats are attracted to NOTHING more greatly than they are attracted to anything drooping or sticking out. Rattan furniture and flower flowers fit this bill.
After our goats cleaned up our poison ivy & briars, then ATE the pool polaris cords and every other cord on the property— we gave them to people who did this for a living.
PS It’s a heckuva way to find out your goats have a copper deficiency— having them EAT hundreds of dollars worth of electric cords!
My girlfriend hired a goat 🐐 lady. The goat 🐐 lady brought fences and fenced in the area to be cleaned up. Then she brought the adorable and very hungry 🐐 goats. In a couple of days the woods were all cleared up. It was very efficient and especially fun! 🐐

There was a big power line construction project in CA. They would fly a helicopter in to the work areas, fly workers back to port a potties miles away. They could not even leave orange peels, apple cores, nothing as it would upset the forest environment. This is how crazy it is.

Many forests have far too high of tree density due to decades of fire suppression, which requires more than goats to take care of.

While low humidity, along with wind, has been a factor in these fires spreading rapidly, I find that 17% number hard to believe, unless they mean the Alvord Desert and the Steens Mountain area, where these is much less fuel than further West along Hwy 395.

It also makes me wonder at the wildfires out of Ontario that blanketed Michigan with toxic smoke in July for about 4 days caused by 100’s of boreal forest fires that were caused by lightning strikes. After a week the smoke was gone and not a word any longer about Ontario forest fires.
Were they lightening strikes? Fires in Canada have ramped up yearly if acres burned is any indication, yet during the Canadian COVID lockdowns they diminished significantly.
7 years ago when we visited the forests in Glacier National Park, there was a sadness for me in seeing how the forest was so old and majestic yet had a forlorn look like an old estate falling down. I wondered why some of the money supporting these parks didn't go toward cleaning the forest floor of natural debris. Volunteers could even do it.
Many trees we saw were afflicted with some sort of fungal disease, dying and being left. But there were also old exceedingly large and tall trees holding on well. I have mused on and off about what is the proper way to care for such forests ever since. Should they rotate gradually through and burn selected areas to start new growth? But then, what about how amazing it is to see such an old and unique kind of forest as those we saw there? All I know is that having a philosophy of truly taking care for the forests there would make a positive difference.
In California, the various environmentalist groups don't want us to touch, cut down or clean up anything in the forests. I guess they prefer all the dry debris on the forest floors. You can't make up their idiocy.

trees are just like people, they get old, rot from the inside, quit producing much benefit to the atmosphere. Then burn or fall down. I flew a logging helicopter in Alaska on "old growth" huge trees, lots were still good, but many hollow and rotten. When you looked to another unit that had been logged 20 years earlier, it was a different color of green, vibrant and growing. So, I think logging is a good thing.

There have been massive fires across this country since before white settlers arrived. There were no armies of forest floor cleaners. What can help these days as we move civilization ever further into forested areas, is the cutting down of smaller trees. Larger trees with high canopies and thick bark don't always burn down.
Someone pointed out, however, the proximity of the fire to contested land planned for a data center. Perhaps there's a connection.
THIS!! I was just reading an article in a local newspaper claiming that Washington State stopped prescribed burns for 15 years! This is not a new concept. They had been doing these burns since the early 1900's and it is wildfire/forest management 101. They only reinstated the burns in 2021. Over the last 20 years, the fires have become more intense and the air quality much worse for much longer. Washington, along with Oregon and California I would suspect, either stopped or greatly reduced the allocated acreage for prescribed burns. Now they are playing catchup and we will see the effects for many years. But hey, they can just blame it on climate change, right?

Seemed simplistic to me too. You can't get rid of ignition sources. Crazy people, irresponsible kids, lightening, machinery throwing sparks, campfires left smoldering. You are going to have ignition sources. Seems like the "root cause" (I hate that Kamala gave that phrase a bad rep) is the way the forests are managed, and development in areas that are prone to uncontrollable fires. It's understandable that when buildings are threatened we want to put fires out. But before we came on the scene, fires were allowed to burn, keeping fuel at a lower level, and creating natural fire breaks that meant today's mega-fires seldom if ever happened. We probably can't return to the days of "let them burn". But the result is predictable - much worse fires.
Here is what makes it hopeless. None of the past fires in Hawaii or the West Coast were investigated at a prosecutorial level. Why? All the evidence was there begging for attention: unnatural burn patterns, trees burned from the inside out, some things burned but others untouched, aluminum rims melted to liquid WITH NO NEARBY FIRE SOURCE, etc etc. But no investigation of such a massive community loss? Come on!
And never mind that ALL of the utility services in Lahaina, including the water, was shut down by SOMEBODY. But no investigation? Having spent many blissful weeks on my much beloved Maui, the Lahaina fire(s) still leave me taking my tinfoil hat on and off. So very many unusual factors…. The head of emergency services for Maui county was off island. The electricity was off, the water was off , and not one of the 80 emergency sirens on island apparently went off. The police seemed to be otherwise occupied until historic Lahaina town was literally an inferno with residents desperately trying to drive out of the dowtown district, with flames licking at their vehicles. Some of the videos I saw from people in their vehicles, terrified, were beyond imagination. How the fire stayed pretty much confined to the historic district without readily spreading seems odd to me. This I know, Dem guv Green had just announced he planned on Lahaina being a “15 minute city”. The whole thing just doesn’t add up in my strange little mind. What I know for certain is that so much history, so many homes that had been in families for generations, and a BUNCH of businesses are no more, gone in a massive fire that killed many. No warnings/sirens, no water, no electricity. And now, there are many questions of what exactly happened to the massive donations given afterward? One bright note is that Samaritans Purse has been there since soon afterward, and have remained there helping rebuild homes. 🙏

What’s funny is they are equating it to simply the same thing that other stores have, “customer loyalty” cards. Yeah? Well I always had to give my ID to get one of those. Name, address, phone number. I know it's beside-the-point (re wildfire section) but the survival rate of covid was *not* "99%". That would mean that one out of 100 people who got sick with covid (flu) died, which didn't happen, just as one in a hundred who get the flu every year don't die. Rather it was along the lines of .00043 % who died from, or with, "covid".
The CDC admitted the infection fatality rate (IFR) was 0.3% in May of 2020. That is similar to the Asian Flu of the late 50's and the Hong Kong Flu of the late 60's.
Most of the other researchers were citing lower numbers (0.25 etc) but even at 0.3% it was never a pandemic. All the subsequent variants were lower with Delta being 0.15-0.2%.
Basically 3 times worse than the yearly seasonal influenza. That claims about 50-60k a year so at most 180k would have died from covid in 2020 if the government did nothing. All deaths over 180,000 in 2020 were government intervention deaths.
And you notice that the were no flu deaths while covid was circulating,

Thanks Jeff, for sharing about the fires. We were just over near Spokane this weekend, and it was really bad. Growing up in the northwest, We did not have the yearly fires that we do today. I think it is the mismanagement of the forest, the lack of funding to real fire control, but also what you brought up here letting arsonists roam free. Ever since the 80s Washington state has been run by Democrats and now really progressive Democrats. I pray for election reform so that Washington can gain a sense of normalcy.
Plenty of funding to fight the ensuing fires though! It's not commonly known, but there have been citizen journalists who have provided evidence of a wildfire-fighting industrial complex. It seems like there's nothing these people don't abuse for personal gain.
Not true! My son and all the firefighters I know were out there for 36 hours or more with no relief. They finally got state and federal help, but not until hundreds of homes had burned. Every single station was on those fires. A lot of them still are.
I have tons of respect for the firefighters. The grift is all in the higher levels of government. They know that the forests are mismanaged, but they'd rather let them burn and then send in the fat bills.

Ontario wildfires a few weeks ago sending smoke and toxic fumes south into Michigan and spreading eastward like I have never seen before and I have been a Michigan resident all my life. After a week the smoke clears and nothing more is heard of Ontario boreal forest fires. What event did those fires bother? FIFA cup finals in New Jersey. Hail at Mt Rushmore right before the big pre July 4 celebration. Lightning and thunderstorms in DC during the 4th celebration. It’s not climate change, it’s climate control.

I checked the weather for the 4th back to 2012 and only one year came close to 2026. I don't believe it "just happened" but like you, I believe it is "climate control."

We live in chicken country in GA and have 45 of various breeds. We supply eggs to family and neighbors and also raise meat chickens. Yes, they are expensive to raise and require quite a bit of work to maintain but knowing where your food has come from and the quality of it makes it worth the effort. No roosters allowed....they will drive you crazy. 🐔
We love our rooster! Not a single hawk or varmint attack since we got a rooster. We’ve had several roosters that have been re-homed though, so it depends on the roosters temperament.
I agree. We have had the crazy roosters that forget to be quiet at night but have a neighbor who is nearly deaf so he adopts them. Our shepherds keep the prey birds and varmits away. Truth be told, the hens "egg song" is louder than some roosters!

I am the most (or close) non-domestic woman maybe on the planet. I bake bread (machine) I knit (I get bored in meetings and watching TV- knit all the way through college, Scotland Yard Program, and the police academy. They had rules about no gum chewing, but not about knitting and nobody minded. I asked. Every. time.
My neighbor has chickens. She's not as off the charts atypical as me- she has kids. We talk "chickens" They have 8. I am the chicken sitter when they are gone. Chicken tender, if you will.
Their chicken poop graces my composter. I don't grow anything much, but I like the efficiency of composting. In fact I really hate all things lawn/gardening. I do them because, well they need doing. Just like cleaning toilets and cooking. We need the results.
I also play the bagpipes. When I was a girl, my mother (Marine Sgt in WWII and business exec when women didn't do that - SHE was atypical, but did stuff, too - Brownie leader and sort of cooked) asked me about "those men's shirts you wear." Polo shirts. "Mom, they are women's shirts the buttons are even on the opposite side." Then I went on to wear a police uniform. Male attire. One of the first women, but even then they had women's sizing and tailoring. Now, I wear a kilt....a LOT....we are a very busy service band. Women do NOT wear kilts. Women wear "kilted skirts." Why? because my formal kilt is 9 yards (origin of the whole 9 yards) of thick pleated wool. Not a flattering thing around one's hips, but neither was a gun belt...I digress. It is MALE attire, but I'm a piper. So, I wear a Piper's kilt. So, after all these years (28 years of piping) this little old lady is finally wearing a "skirt" and it is still male attire.
I have found that telling people with ridiculous ideas to "Get over it." works. I'm kind of blunt when I do it. I've found being direct is the best way to sort out the riff raff. "You are dismmissed. Go sit down."

Our kilts (we both pipe) were made on Cape Breton Island, NS. In a true kilt there is not ONE machine made stitch. All painstakingly done by hand. There is a long apprenticeship to becoming a kilt maker.

Wish we were neighbors!!! We have bees, not chickens, and I love gardening and yard work. We'd sure have a lot to talk about. 👍
I SO want to have bees. But, I had breast cancer and am high risk for lymphodema. Consequently, any break in that side's arm can be a medical emergency. I read that if you have bees, you will get stung. Rats. BUT- we have a big drought going here and a bird bath out front. Bees come for a drink. Some fall into the water. Without thinking, I scooped one out that was flogging around to put it on the edge. The bee seemed grateful. I've done this a bunch of times with the same result. So, I'm a "chicken tender" AND a "bee life saver." No mouth to mouth, thankfully. I don't have chickens. I trade my bread for eggs.
If you wore a bee suit, the chances of being stung approximate zero and that's only because you'd be messing around with their hive. If you leave it alone and never look inside or take honey from it, they won't bother you. We have 4 hives in the garden and mow around and weed whack around them but they don't care. My husband is a beekeeper and tells me that because he only uses Italian queens, the bees are particularly docile. I have a bee suit, but gave up wearing it. But they are great protection, just in case. The only time I've been stung was on top of my foot because I mowed over a nest of ground bees while wearing flip flops. Ground bees can sting multiple times whereas a honey bee can only sting you once and she will die. About your bird bath: we have one also, not far from the hive. We float a block of wood in the water and the bees can land on it without problem. They drink their water by sticking their proboscis inside the wood. You could also use a stone or even keep a piece of old carpet wet. I'm sure the bees you've rescued are grateful. My husband is so confident around bees (something they sense) that they walk all over his fingers and hands and arms and won't sting. Honestly, if you're interested, you should check into having bees. Having a hive is actually very relaxing since they do all the work.
I am going to think seriously about it now. We don't mow here in anything but decent shoes. Too many red ants and other critters.
I do have a couple of stone platforms and some shells that the bees use, but now and then, one will somehow go swimming. I think the ones that drink from the edge might be the ones to take a slide!
If I get into it, I might get one of the local beekeepers to come help out when it is time to harvest. I do believe they sense more things than we know. Horses and dogs are like that. I don't have horses, but when I see them, they come over to nuzzle. Has been that way since I was a kid. I'm not afraid of much of anything. We have one we see when we pipe police funerals. He LOVES the pipes.

Absolutely you should try a hive: make sure it's an Italian queen, that your hive opening faces East (for the morning sun), and having a local beekeeper come out in the late summer/early fall to gather some honey for you is a great idea! They truly do not like people or anyone else taking their stores they worked so hard to get. Bees are sentient animals and have good hearts. To encourage you, watch National Geographic's documentary "Secrets of the Bees." It's amazing. Oh, and should you get a hive, don't use anything plastic in it, including the frames which should be wired wax. Some people are into plastic and my husband is convinced it's toxic to his girls. My sister has 5 horses and you're right: they sense more than we know. All life is so amazing.
