He made us in His image, and He didn’t do that with the animals. Much as we love the animals, it is a mistake to value them more than humans. I often say that I like animals better than I like people, but liking is different from valuing. If I had a choice between saving an animal or a person, I would have to save the person. God is the one who assigns value to His creation, and He has placed us first.
Human sacrifice was very different from capital punishment. It was the innocent who were killed, often quite horribly.
If you have never read Perelandra by CS Lewis, you might want to. He had an excellent understanding of these things.
