Federal Funds were cut for the preventative maintenance work. Additionally, multiple Electric companies had failing equipment that was not replaced. Huge lawsuit against SCE (Southern California Edison). Then there was the thunderstorms that sent off 100's-1000's of lightning strikes 1 summer, for a few days.

I am Idaho...July, August and September are usually terrible months for air quality. Wildfires are a part of life here. Regarding the Paradise Fire in NoCal a few years ago..it was reported that incendiary temperatures almost reached 2,000 degrees F at some points in the fire. This is NOT natural.
Yes, I have heard that people saw blue streaks across the sky to targeted areas. And...right into towns. Wildfires do not burn from town out...like the Santa Rosa fire and Paradise fire.
It (2000 degree ) is fairly natural when high wind, dry timber, and thousands of very flamable homes with propane tanks meet. The Pradise fire started NE of the town, and followed the wind south west. It did not start in town.
I have heard from the tow truck drivers who hauled the cars out of Paradise that the damage done to those rigs was otherworldly. And...the bodies were fused to the seats in unrecognizable masses.

But I did see some articles about wet towels related to emergencies like fires and volcanic ash. They are not super effective, but better than nothing, and certainly better than surgical masks, which are not better than nothing. Apparently, N95 is okay, but no one should wear one and instead stay inside in recirculated air until the air improves.
Australia December 2019 was the same due to wildfires. Maybe C19 didn’t get a foothold here because we already were locked inside. The smoke all along the east coast major cities was like pea soup and water shortages added to the drama. We had the Canadian smoke in Colorado for several days, before the jet stream or something shifted, carrying the smoke to the Northeast instead. Going outdoors in the smokey air made my eyes burn and tear and my throat grow rough within minutes. Even indoors my eyes burned.
I could not bring myself to try a mask, because of the bad old covid association. But I don't fault anyone who tried one. At least some of the smoke particles were big enough that a good mask could block them. Maybe it helped.
We might note that in Asia, where bad air days are not uncommon, esp in China and Korea, it is common practice to wear masks on the worst, smoggiest days, particularly for outdoor exercise.
Sources I have read, which do say that corona virus particles are so small that they slip through masks, so masks are useless against the virus, also say that good masks can filter out larger particles.

I live in covidiot land near Philly. They all have their masks on and are hiding in their houses. Good. They can stay inside hopefully with their masks still on. I told my family that while you should be concerned with air quality and maybe not go for that 10 mile hike, don't fall prey to the hysteria. I am sick of all the fear and drama.
I live near Raleigh and all they talked about on the local news was "stay inside" due to air quality while it was raining outside. They finally had to admit that well, yea, the rain helped clear out the fire smoke but you should still stay inside. So a friend and I went for a walk last night near a baseball field where they were still playing baseball. YAY!

Honestly, this is when you SHOULD be wearing a mask. I was living in California during the 2003 fire season with fires that completely encircled Southern California. I’d come inside after running errands and would be coughing up soot for hours.

My comment was mostly off-the-cuff intuitive.
I think it's important to not do too many internet searches or send too many links related to *events* like this sort because then *they* see the level of panic amongst the population (which *they* utterly get off on), so I'm not going to link here or dig too deep to back up my intuition.
But I did see some articles about wet towels related to emergencies like fires and volcanic ash. They are not super effective, but better than nothing, and certainly better than surgical masks, which are not better than nothing. Apparently, N95 is okay, but no one should wear one and instead stay inside in recirculated air until the air improves.
Australia December 2019 was the same due to wildfires. Maybe C19 didn’t get a foothold here because we already were locked inside. The smoke all along the east coast major cities was like pea soup and water shortages added to the drama. You might also wonder - if C19 was an airborne bioweapon release - that the heavy smoke spoiled the efficacy. 🤷♀️

We had the Canadian smoke in Colorado for several days, before the jet stream or something shifted, carrying the smoke to the Northeast instead. Going outdoors in the smokey air made my eyes burn and tear and my throat grow rough within minutes. Even indoors my eyes burned.
I could not bring myself to try a mask, because of the bad old covid association. But I don't fault anyone who tried one. At least some of the smoke particles were big enough that a good mask could block them. Maybe it helped.
We might note that in Asia, where bad air days are not uncommon, esp in China and Korea, it is common practice to wear masks on the worst, smoggiest days, particularly for outdoor exercise.

Sources I have read, which do say that corona virus particles are so small that they slip through masks, so masks are useless against the virus, also say that good masks can filter out larger particles.
I've been in California during code purple and code brown days, and couldn't have survived without an N95 mask with that thingy that lets your breath come out freely. I know it doesn't catch the PM2.5 but it seemed to catch at least some of what was in the air.

My son fought wildfires for 5 years and concurs with what you said. Prescribed burns used to be the norm and the most economically responsible way to manage the forests but environmentalists would promptly file lawsuits and thus thus practice was stopped.
So, here in Colorado this is the "fable" being told...the powers that be do not want the forests cleared of old brush...they want big fires to use as evidence for their climate change agendas!

The fine particles of wildfire smoke (which contain anything the fire has burned) get imbedded in your lungs, permanently. Not worth it.

It's also typically the case that the wildfires are caused by leftist policies. While it used to be the norm that controlled burns were conducted to ensure that fires didn't rage out of control, in many places, leftist politicians have put an end to that practice to "respect mother nature." No longer conducting controlled burns leaves a lot of dead, dry timber, leaves, and kindling laying around on the forest floor, which fuels massive wildfires. I haven't read about this case specifically, so that might not be the case here. But, it seems every time I look into a real-world problem it has its source in a leftist solution to a fake "problem."
