My oldest son developed a very life threatening case of endocarditis around his aorta following a root canal. Of course the two were never linked. After a month of fever, chills, and trips to emergency resulting in “ you have a virus.. take Tylenol and go rest, he drove himself to the hospital and was eventually diagnosed with an infection at the heart valve which necessitated this 45 year old guy to have an aortic transplant.
An undiagnosed heart murmur indicates a valve problem, in which case, prophylactic antibiotics should be given prior to any dental treatment. This kills any oral bacteria entering the blood stream and protects the faulty valve.
