If you look on the NOAA site, you can find an article that calls the trash in the waters around Puerto Rico a âgarbage patch.â Thatâs the official terminology used! The effort to clean up the trash on the island and in the waters surrounding Puerto Rico has been going on officially with NOAA and the US Department of Commerce (& now EPA & other âstakeholdersâ) since about 2013. Now âyearlyâ they have to revise the program because itâs such a huge herculon job that they admit, may not be possible to clean up.
