I think your suspicions are right: unemployment numbers are highly misleading. Common sense says "unemployment" should be the number of working age, able bodied people not working. It isn't.
Simple thing to remember: if someone has something to say and they lead with a statistic, they're lying. "Lies, damned lies, and statistics."
And they are especially suspect when the statistics they cite are ones they generate, they control, like government statistics on inflation, job growth or unemployment. Frankly, I don't know what numbers to believe any more on anything. It's all a grift!
I disagree about statistics. Without numbers to back up an argument, it's just an opinion. There are two problems with the use of statistics. Most people are too mathematically challenged to evaluate them correctly. And, most people are too gullible (amply demonstrated by COVID) to realize the numbers may be cherry-picked, outright fabricated, or misleading for any number of reasons. In this case about unemployment, they mislead the uninformed and gullible. I totally agree with every word of your last paragraph. All we get is lies.
Re unemployment statistics: The government is quite upfront about who/what is included in those statistics...those who have quit looking at not included....it would be helpful if the government had a separate line for those people but presumably there is nothing documentable for it...it would probably include an analysis of new vs constant vs drops for welfare but that is really sketchy as well.

But yes on the value of proper statistics. My profession is chemistry R&D, often making measurements where the uncertainty on the measurement is at least as important as the number measured! It's all about assumptions (what does your uncertainty estimate include?), confidence and properly drawn conclusions. I sort of understand kindergarten statistics, but I know the value of a good statistician in helping a measurements guy like me get things right. Unfortunately, most statisticians are theoreticians and not much good in the real world.
Statistics cited in media are more often than not misleading, and of no use to the average reader, who doesn't understand the pitfalls. My degree is in math, and my favorite math course was Probability and Statistics. The real-world applications of that course were immense. Statistics are a great tool, but only when properly compiled, and properly interpreted. Which is a tiny slice of their usage.
The plandemic knocked a lot of people out of stable health, mentally and physically. Additionally, scores of utes went off to college to learn skills with absolutely no commercial value. I also suspect a lot of regionality. Our small-town downtown businesses have sales down 30%, year over year since Canadians started boycotting travel to the USA (we're practically a border town). While there are a lot of job openings, they're largely service industry and low wages.
People who quit looking/applying are no longer included. The labor market stats have been rigged and wrong for decades. If a D is in office and it's a "good" report, somehow people around here know better, but since it's the tribe of choice with a good labor report, the numbers are to be believed. Absolutely 100%! The Affordable Care Act took the system from bad to worse. It made health care "affordable" for insurance companies. A fiasco of gargantuan proportions, with health care now approaching 20% of GDP.
The third-party payer system, whether gov't or insurance, guaranteed the progression to the parasitic monster we have today. It invites not only fraud from without, but fraud from within the system. There is no solution that can be implemented. Almost 20% of the economy is the medical industry. That kind of power always wins.

I'm thinking the same. Not sure the job market is that good and I am speaking as someone who has been searching for a job for a year. Many people I know are unemployed and no longer able to file for benefits, and thus believe the unemployment numbers are not an accurate representation.
Marie, may not be ideal but do Spark. It is linked with Walmart where you pick the routes you want and make Walmart deliveries to homes. Pay is good. You can do short or longer distances as you choose. Just something in the meantime where you make your own hours.

Honestly, I'm just holding my breath till November. Either it's going to be a bloodbath and Trump & Co. are going to jail one way or another, We lose one of the 2 houses and everything is a waste of time, or we keep everything and gain ground. I don't honestly see #3 happening, #2 is most likely, but for as bad as the no new wars Iran mess is turning out, #1 isn't off the table either. For the life of me, I don't know why in the hell he didn't wait till after the midterms to pull the pin on the Iran grenade and just keep plowing through domestic improvements like he was doing, AND EVERYBODY WAS HAPPY ABOUT. I think Iran's timing was an absolute disaster.
All that being said, I'm ready to pull the plug on PA and go move someplace less stupid. I've got a little over 10 years before retirement, I don't know if I can continue to hold my nose and watch rampant stupidity run wild in western PA, problem is what I have here in PA will cost me more than my savings and whatever money I'd get for the property here, so I'd effectively be starting over, or taking a major downgrade to replicate what I have now in a better state.

I think your suspicions are right: unemployment numbers are highly misleading. Common sense says "unemployment" should be the number of working age, able bodied people not working. It isn't.
Simple thing to remember: if someone has something to say and they lead with a statistic, they're lying. "Lies, damned lies, and statistics."
And they are especially suspect when the statistics they cite are ones they generate, they control, like government statistics on inflation, job growth or unemployment. Frankly, I don't know what numbers to believe any more on anything. It's all a grift!
I disagree about statistics. Without numbers to back up an argument, it's just an opinion. There are two problems with the use of statistics. Most people are too mathematically challenged to evaluate them correctly. And, most people are too gullible (amply demonstrated by COVID) to realize the numbers may be cherry-picked, outright fabricated, or misleading for any number of reasons. In this case about unemployment, they mislead the uninformed and gullible. I totally agree with every word of your last paragraph. All we get is lies.
Re unemployment statistics: The government is quite upfront about who/what is included in those statistics...those who have quit looking at not included....it would be helpful if the government had a separate line for those people but presumably there is nothing documentable for it...it would probably include an analysis of new vs constant vs drops for welfare but that is really sketchy as well.

But yes on the value of proper statistics. My profession is chemistry R&D, often making measurements where the uncertainty on the measurement is at least as important as the number measured! It's all about assumptions (what does your uncertainty estimate include?), confidence and properly drawn conclusions. I sort of understand kindergarten statistics, but I know the value of a good statistician in helping a measurements guy like me get things right. Unfortunately, most statisticians are theoreticians and not much good in the real world.
Statistics cited in media are more often than not misleading, and of no use to the average reader, who doesn't understand the pitfalls. My degree is in math, and my favorite math course was Probability and Statistics. The real-world applications of that course were immense. Statistics are a great tool, but only when properly compiled, and properly interpreted. Which is a tiny slice of their usage.
The plandemic knocked a lot of people out of stable health, mentally and physically. Additionally, scores of utes went off to college to learn skills with absolutely no commercial value. Many of those jobs have (praise God) been eliminated, as they were servicing the aims of the Marxist progressives. These are people with almost no skills, unable to contribute to anything more meaningful than making espresso-based beverages.
I also suspect a lot of regionality. Our small-town downtown businesses have sales down 30%, year over year since Canadians started boycotting travel to the USA (we're practically a border town). While there are a lot of job openings, they're largely service industry and low wages.
People who quit looking/applying are no longer included. The labor market stats have been rigged and wrong for decades. If a D is in office and it's a "good" report, somehow people around here know better, but since it's the tribe of choice with a good labor report, the numbers are to be believed. It's quite pathetic, honestly.

People use “lead”, the heavy metal, when they mean “led”, the past tense of “lead”.
English has so many words that look and/or sound the same but mean entirely different things. How anyone learns it as a second language astounds me. That said, the example you cite (another example: cite/sight/site) is most frequently made by native speakers. No excuse. Spelling and grammar education in this country has become nearly non-existent.

Let's use the next 5 weeks to get busy and DO something about the concerns we have. If you are in MO, vote YES on Amendment 3 and NO on Amendment 6. Tell your friends. Make some calls. Knock some doors. Get so busy you don't have TIME to worry.
And adding to that Donna, know that God is in charge and profuse worry should not be in our vocabulary. I agree, a call to action is in order. What will be will be as it is ordained from Above but we have faith that the Lord will take care of those that believe in Him.
BUT "worry" can be a motivator. If we say, "God's got this" and have no worries, we wouldn't vote, volunteer, and donate to causes. I was at a rally last night, and one of the speakers noted that there is a decent percentage (didn't write it down, don't remember the exact #) of Christians who are not registered and don't vote. "Faith without works is dead" So it is incumbent on we believers to put our faith in God to work in our communities, and that includes the ballot box.

I don't see worry as a motivator at all. I see it as the opposite. Nowhere in the Bible did God say to be apathetic. Those who have always be motivated will continue to be so while the sloths and doomsdayers will do little to nothing in my opinion.
What still concerns me is what He can let us go through, but then I also see all that he saved us from! 🙌🏻 so even if the SHTF I will know that He’s still got this. Although you will probably not be able to find me hiding up in the mountains with no cell service or outside contact. LOL
