Repeating an old "Humor in Uniform" story from Readers Digest, a young military wife stationed in NM asked an elderly neighbor native how she managed to keep all the dust from seeping into the house. The neighbor replied, "Honey, that's not 'dust'; that's 'enchantment!'" The NYT should be overjoyed with 260 FBI agents doing duty on the Atlanta dry hole. For everyone out celebrating our countryโs birthday, stay safe. There will be all variety of crazies out there who just canโt deal with your happiness, traditional family or love for your country.
Speaking of staying safe, I've been watching some of the very exciting World Cup soccer games North America is hosting. (And the US team is looking very strong!) The level of security at these games is amazing both in terms of personnel and electronic systems. It occurred to me that Trump should hire the Cup's head of security to take over the Secret Service. Turn on a game and you'll see what I mean.
Iโm surprised more attention isnโt being given to the fantastic defense against Bosnia while playing the second half with one less player who was our best scorer. Rather then let that rattle them they rose to the challenge beautifully. Anyone that doesnโt understand soccer needs to know how dramatically one less man changes the dynamic of the game and most of it will be spent defending your goal. Also, it seemed as if the hand of angels prevented three goals Bosnia should have had while the U.S. was playing with less players. Each attempt mysteriously missed, like the bad aim of a novice player. But they are not novices! Of course plenty of attention has been given to the US penalty kick that was perfection to every physics specialist on the planet. Chefโs kiss. Truly a remarkable game to watch.
My wife and I never followed soccer, but after watching a few, we can watch ANY match and sympathize with the struggles of each team, and have learned not to assume it's "safe" to leave the room for "just a second"... So grateful to so many for visiting our country, and for being gracious.
Just had another thought: think of all the large crowds gathered for the World Cup and how big the ones were celebrating Americaโs win in multiple cities/states. The volume was just massive!! It was ALL organic. Nobody was paid to participate. Now imagine the professional leftist protestors and all their rallies. I bet some are sobering up when they witness the huge numbers of us they will face if they push us too far. We definitely outnumber them.
Already dead in both elections; however, in 2024, quite a few of the turn-out-the-dead-vote activists were also dead, and that's the kind of dead we really need more of.

Beautifully written. Thank you. Always powerful insights from you. Decided to start this weekend off right โฆ.by breaking my ankle watering my plants last niteโฆโฆoh well - as long as it stays cool inside. ๐ฉผ๐ฉผ๐๐ป๐๐ป๐๐ป
Yikes! Here in tropical Florida, I risked heat stroke last evening trying to deal minimally with the jungle my backyard has become. Long story of a disaster. Mulch does not prevent or slow down weeds. Iโm not far from the St. Johnโs River and nature takes every opportunity to revert to the wild.
So sorry about the broken ankle and I hope you have a speedy recovery.
Fact. 4โ thick is the minimum. Anything less will allow weeds to come through. We should know, 20 years of needing 25-34 yards of mulch for how many beds we have and trying to โget byโ with a dusting the years we couldnโt afford the full amount and tried to make 15-20 yards stretch. It canโt. Last spring was the first year I could afford to put down 4โ and this spring there arenโt as many weeds coming through.
I wish we could afford the 6โ. But this yard has way too many mulch beds.
Better yet, layers of wet newspaper or cardboard under the mulch. It will hold the weeds at bay for a full season. 40+ years of Florida experience, now starting all over in the red clay of SC!
Getting newspaper used to be easy. Sometimes I just go to Home Depot and buy rolls of brown painter's paper. That way I don't lose half the day reading the papers!
I'm glad the plastic worked for you. I like the cardboard method better because the worms can get up and poop around your vegetables and make them even healthier. Plus it lets the roots go down deeper.
I'm in Arizona. And you can get free wood chips from the transfer yard/ dump. They will even load it in the back of your truck.
In cities you can sign up for chip drop. Where tree trimmers that are also signed up to chipdrop. They are in your neighborhood they will dump a load of wood chips on your driveway/yard. Free but if you if you paid 20 bucks you get the chips there faster. A lot more economical than buying mulch by the bag.
In one really bad spot (previous owners did not weed everโฆ) - we did a lasagna gardenโฆ.putting down brown packing paper and thin cardboard first over the weedsโฆ.then nice layer of mulch. Working great!
Oh no, so sorry. I hope that heals quickly. I made it outside yesterday morning to water my small vegetable garden, picked a few nice peppers and some chard. I'm staying inside today.
Thanks so much everyone. Note to self : donโt wear flip flops and casually walk on the piles of decorative garden rocksโฆ.(from previous ownerโฆ.will be removed once it isnโt 100ยฐ). Thankfully just a small fractureโฆ.helps my previous employer was a podiatrist ๐
The Biden administration worked overtime to destroy America and American lives; to cement Communism in place of The Constitution and Bill of Rights our Founding Fathers constructed The United States upon... and I have to admit, at times, their atrocities were difficult to bear... However; the Trump Administration has awakened the caged and beaten down lion... and America is back... Praise God!!!

Libertyโs light in freedomโs hand
Raised to the heavens in humble prayer
May God Almighty our future bear

As we turn our eyes upward and in Him abide.
Let us guard the light bravely and hold it high for the world
And keep freedomโs banner always unfurled
To shine in the darkness and wave in the night
As beacons to lead all to His glorious light.

JRR Tolkien was a marvelous Christian novelist!
He could forsee the powers that seek total control.
Not like a Republic with laws.
We are moving there with the AI World ahead.
Yes he could. His was a great mind and so was CS Lewis who was Tolkien's protege. Lewis also foresaw these powers as depicted in his Space Trilogy. My favorite has to be his "The Screwtape Letters".

Wise words, Jerri
Mr. Patel is clearly over his target.
I have yet to hear an explanation how the % of eligible voters that voted, which historically has been 62-64% magically went to
over 95% in the 2020 election or what happened to the extra 10 million Buyden voters went in โ24
Votes are the mother's milk of socialist revolutions. Not voters, votes.
Exactly J Galt! 800,000 'extra' names in Oregon's voter rolls per Judicial Watch, and admitted to by the Secretary of State.
More like 26 million: 155 in 2020 vs. 128 in 2016, 129 in 2024.
And did those extra 15 million voters die between 2020 and 2024???
Already dead in both elections; however, in 2024, quite a few of the turn-out-the-dead-vote activists were also dead, and that's the kind of dead we really need more of.

Iโm in an extreme drought location in Florida. As my grass dies the weeds are flourishing.
Oh No, donโt say that ๐ฅด I am preparing for a day of mulching today ๐ ๐ ๐
The key is 3 to 6 in of mulch. Six is better. Mulching allows you to pull The few weeds that come up easily. That's been my experience.
Maybe works better in some parts of the country. Florida really wants to be a jungle.
Iโm going to start cutting up and saving my Amazon delivery boxes!
May have to subscribe to a newspaper.๐ฉ
Getting newspaper used to be easy. Sometimes I just go to Home Depot and buy rolls of brown painter's paper. That way I don't lose half the day reading the papers!
Yes, I can't remember the last time I bought a newspaper... <boom>
That is A LOT of mulch ๐ ๐ ๐ญ we did learn the hard way that even the most expensive land fabric does no good.
I finally put black plastic under the mulch. Helps a lot!!!
I'm glad the plastic worked for you. I like the cardboard method better because the worms can get up and poop around your vegetables and make them even healthier. Plus it lets the roots go down deeper.
Thanks for the tip! I think the weeds like mulch
Is there a good source for brown packing paper and thin cardboard?
My source was moving to a new cityโฆ Home Depot
Oh no, so sorry. I hope that heals quickly. I made it outside yesterday morning to water my small vegetable garden, picked a few nice peppers and some chard. I'm staying inside today.
Ouch!!!! Iโm so sorry that happened to you!
Yikes, been there, although not from watering plants. Hope you heal nicely!
Was that the ankle you wear the monitoring device on? ๐
Secretโs outโฆdangโฆ ๐๐

Thanks so much everyone. Note to self : donโt wear flip flops and casually walk on the piles of decorative garden rocksโฆ.(from previous ownerโฆ.will be removed once it isnโt 100ยฐ). Thankfully just a small fractureโฆ.helps my previous employer was a podiatrist ๐
The question then becomes, "So what's the other guy look like?"
๐๐
Dang plants and their kanoodling and plotting, prolly akin to Pinky and the Brain taking over the world, (or a cat's diary)!!

Keep in mind, the Treaty of Paris officially ending the Revolution begins thusly: โIn the name of the Most Holy and Undivided Trinityโ . Just for those of you who believe in separation of church and state.
Jeff,
Thank you for a great article and tribute to the USA from a great patriot. God Bless America!
