That’s a great snake story! I’ve always considered snakes to be my helpers in the garden but prefer that they keep a low profile—neither seen nor heard.

Same here. I encounter quite a few black racers and never bother with them. My girlfriend and I were pulling weeds one day when she suddenly let out an ear piercing scream and fell backwards off of the milk crate she was seated on... I ran to help her up, laughing as she described what had transpired.... " I reached into the azalea bush to pull out the vines and out comes this snake right at me! Lord have mercy, I thought I was goin die!" I told her it was one of my harmless black racers... "Well, you can find another weed puller then cause I ain't goin let one send me to my grave!" She didn't return for several months, then when she showed back up she wanted to know if I'd seen the snake again. I told her she'd scared it away with her high pitched screams... She started pulling weeds again, but I did take note that she used her rake to clear the bushes before she reached her hand into the area... Lol

That's me. I scream the neighborhood down. Had one that used to live under the car in a hole in the cement in the barn. That damn snake chased me half way down the drive.

I fixed him though...moth balls down his hall and boxes of it sprinkled in the barn.

No....he fixed you. The desire to offend harmless snakes dies when you learn about them. My eldest daughter was pertified of snakes, yet they showed up frequently in her life. At the age of 40 she began a selfless journey, by joining a facebook group to overcome her fear of all kinds of snakes. Now, she is the resident family snake expert. "Moccasins are vipers. They are aggressive. They will get out of your way. No, they won't chase you. They aren't that kind of aggressive." She was speaking to her son, matter of factly, after he asserted that moccasins will come after him. He was immediately calmed, armed with education. I am so proud of her! The mom who had no real fear of snakes never thought to speak to her fear in such a way as she did.

I even bought a book about how to get over fear of snakes.

Nope.

It is atavistic in me. Probably had something to do with my childhood, and I won't repeat the story here as it would definitely identify me...but the teenager up the street kept exoctic snakes and they used to escape.....I am probably traumatized for life about them.
