The worst I endured was a thick wooden paddle (for chewing gum or writing on the desk), ear pulling, and shoulder pinching just for not walking in a perfect soldier line. As a teacher, I f you want the students to do something all you have to do is complement them and have a great reward system. Let them be kids!
I had hateful teachers who hurt my self worth and probably played a role in bad choices I made as a teen. However, I had 1 really good teacher I knew loved me and I never forgot her. Teachers have a lot of power to do good but so many do not especially nowadays.
My husband is a retired high school teacher. He shook his head at some of the teachers he worked with. The physical abuse was more common back in the 50’s. Even then my husband could crowd a punk up against the lockers if necessary in the late 60’s, early 70’s.

They paddled up till the early 80s but that should be the parent's job.
