I have worked as a medical transcriptionist since ’97 and have been replaced multiple times by corporations using voice recognition. One of these times I was offered the chance to become part of the corporation workforce and was offered the opportunity to earn minimum wage, or less! I then became an IC and worked for a clinic for 10 years until I was replaced by an EHR. I’m also a patient there, and the change is disheartening to say the least. (A word to the wise, if you go to a clinic/hospital, always request a copy of the note from each visit and read it carefully. Voice “wreck” is notorious for mistakes that overworked MT editors or providers may not catch and become part of your permanent health record.)
