Never heard of The Ugly American but I just read a synopsis and it sounds spot on. They told us we were “freeing” oppressed people and spreading democracy. Except they never pointed out that most people in the world don’t know what it means and don’t want it. It’s completely ethnocentric of us. Just like it is of the Muslims extreme that think Sharia Law will work here in America.
Agreed Bo. Another good book is The Economic Hitman, written by an American Economic Hitman. He realized his wrongdoings afterwards and wrote about it. Reads like a spy novel. He lives in Fl also, last I read.
I read it as a young woman and it had lifelong impact on how I thought; and more importantly, how I acted when I was overseas representing our country in the Army.
I consider the tomes written prior to the year 2000 to be far superior in content and command of the language than recent authors. Just my own particular "bent" I guess.
I have now learned after reading various newsletters during this scamdemic that the Vietnam War was all about the oil reserves our government was hoping to latch onto--NOT about keeping South Vietnam from the dangers of totalitarianism that was North Vietnam. How horrific--to think our sons and daughters bled and died for such an ignoble goal!!

we are the new banana republic (though I doubt we are still a republic)

The book was better than the flick--Marlon Brando was NOT "believable" in that role.
Sharia Law is being implemented in MN - right in the midst of our so-called "democracy"--thanks to Barry Boy!!

Good for you, Jean!! Sometimes our patriotism can get in the way of our humanity!
Good book.

My copy is from the early and aging quickly. It's a well told story. I have read a few books about Indochina.
