I grew up in Peru where my geologist Dad searched out new sites for likely successful oil drilling for a subsidiary of Standard Oil. That ragged coastline was a unique and fantastic place to grow up. With Peru's new management, I truly hope the President encourages Peru, so ravaged by incompetent leaders and cartels for so many decades, to enter into some kind of similar arrangement and begin a similar renewal to a beautiful land Simon Bolivar helped escape the Spanish tyranny.

As someone whose career was in the Census Bureau, I have asked many people the question about their ethnicity and have had to answer the same question when I had to fill out the form. This is from 1970 to 2020. People put their ethnicity down if they knew it but some people didn't know it and just said "American". I began by saying "English" on my early Censuses because my understanding is that that is what I mostly am but by 2020 I used "American" because it felt more like what describes me.

I did some work for long standing Canadian Stelco Steel works. They are demolishing 800 acres of prime steel manufacturing buildings and turning it into an industrial park.

Then we could read a “Land Acknowledgement” expressing our gratitude and respect to the original stewards of the Great Lakes, the Seneca (Ohio), Ojibwe (Michigan), Dakota (Minnesota) and Miami (Wisconsin) tribes. These changes should be a boon or tourism in the Great Lakes’ states. Plus, we could count on at least one Democrat Senator to vote in favor of the name change, in the event Congress wanted to get their lazy asses back to work and acknowledge our gratitude and respect to these tribes by renaming all the Great Lakes.

Because the word Ontario derives from "the Iroquoian language family that translates to "great lake," "beautiful lake," or "sparkling water"." I got raked over the coals in my "Today's News" by one reader on this, but I think the logic is legit.
We---the world---go along with stupid and a-historical renaming every day. Ceylon? Sri Lanka. Rhodesia? Zimbabwe. But the big one? Judea="Palestine," a ROMAN made up name to punish the Jews after a revolt. Jews still call this Judea behind closed doors. Arabs in the region call Israel . . . well, . . . nothing because to them it doesn't exist. Naming things is a way of establishing legitimacy, even if not proper. For example, if we were accurate, we'd call Los Angeles "New Azteca," or Chicago "Benghazi-by-the-Lake," or Minneapolis "New Mogadishu."
I have made this exact point on several occasions, Larry, about Palestine. I believe it was Hadrian? And it was merely a province in the Roman Empire, not a country!

What has happened in Venezuela since the Communists took over there is a crime against humanity and it did need to be ended... but honestly, which I suppose is too much to hope for from the USG. I grew up in Peru where my geologist Dad searched out new sites for likely successful oil drilling for a subsidiary of Standard Oil. That ragged coastline was a unique and fantastic place to grow up. While it says a lot about Patton, it is also about the history of the "colored" tank battalions who fought in three areas during WWII. His grandfather said, "No, we all went to bed and woke up one day to find these signs all over the place," i.e., the "colored only" signs.

Speaking of which, in the 2020 census, faced with the list of ethnicities into which to fit myself, I, as a dog rescuer and dog fan who'd learned the proper name for a mutt, checked the box "Other," and filled in the blank with "All American." Meanwhile, on the opposite coast, a 20-something black/African-American woman from Tennessee (I was a 66-yo white/European-American from California) had done exactly the same thing: checked "Other" and filled in "All-American.
By the 2030 census, if "the government" hasn't gotten rid of that section, let's try to get everyone to check "other" and fill in "All-American,"

As someone whose career was in the Census Bureau, I have asked many people the question about their ethnicity and have had to answer the same question when I had to fill out the form. This is from 1970 to 2020. People put their ethnicity down if they knew it but some people didn't know it and just said "American". I began by saying "English" on my early Censuses because my understanding is that that is what I mostly am but by 2020 I used "American" because it felt more like what describes me.

I did some work for long standing Canadian Stelco Steel works. They are demolishing 800 acres of prime steel manufacturing buildings and turning it into an industrial park.
Stelco is now owned by a US steel maker. Sad to see it go down the toilet but Canada does not support it own industries. 20% of Canada's steel making is domestically owned. the rest is foreign owned. Slater steel went bankrupt 20 years ago.

I suggests the lakes be named, from east to west as follows:
1. Lake America (only because Trump already chose that one).
2. Lake Ohio (formerly Erie, could use a rebrand after catching fire a few times from pollution).
3. Lake Michigan (formerly Lake Huron. Why not piss off Michigan by taking away Lake Michigan and changing Lake Huron to Lake Michigan? Michigan pisses off sane America all the time, and they have an embarrassment of riches when it comes to Great Lakes.)

That way we could inform Canada that we were following our culturally sensitive neighbor’s leadership in reverting to Native American names. Then we could read a “Land Acknowledgement” expressing our gratitude and respect to the original stewards of the Great Lakes, the Seneca (Ohio), Ojibwe (Michigan), Dakota (Minnesota) and Miami (Wisconsin) tribes. These changes should be a boon or tourism in the Great Lakes’ states. Plus, we could count on at least one Democrat Senator to vote in favor of the name change, in the event Congress wanted to get their lazy asses back to work and acknowledge our gratitude and respect to these tribes by renaming all the Great Lakes.
Just call them Lake 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. No one can be offended by that.

I read somewhere that most rivers in the U.S., from the Mississippi eastward, still bear names given them by pre-European peoples.

Except it was NEVER about the oil. It is what the oil is SOLD for. Iraq, Libya, Venezuela, Iran and Russia were all selling their oil for non-US dollar currencies. The first 3 have been dealt with. All 3 now sell for ONLY US dollars and all the money goes to accounts that the USA controls. Step out of line and "No money for you".
Those last 2 aren't going so well are they? You are losing the reserve currency status and without that you can't fund your military empire.
When you have to use your military to force others to use your currency you are in the reserve currency phase called "Death Spiral". China has said it takes decades but they are long term thinkers.

And the doling out of their money, like a teenager on a budget? The difference, of course, is that the parent gives the teenager a bit of the parents' money, whereas in Venezuela, as well as Iraq and Syria, the US is taking the money of the country, putting it into US controlled banks, and then handing back a minute quantity, with strict control on how it is spent.
Obvious illustration is what happened after the June 24th earthquake in Venezuela. The US has taken $13 billion in Venezuelan oil money since the kidnapping, put into US controlled accounts, but offered only $300 million for relief efforts, funneled through NGOs and charities. How very helpful.

Thank you Mrs RW, I agree but with this caveat. What has happened in Venezuela since the Communists took over there is a crime against humanity and it did need to be ended... but honestly, which I suppose is too much to hope for from the USG. The Venezuelan gov't has literally destroyed one of the most prosperous cultures on the planet and reduced them to Cuban style poverty and driven a huge percentage of the population out of the country just to survive.
But I'm afraid the corporations and the NGOs will get more out of the relief effort than the Venezuelan people. I think the truth is, the American oligarchy does not want a prosperous country south of our border. All we know is greed.

Oil futures (and thus prices) are dictated by Brent Oil….City of London.
OIl futures are bets on future prices. They have nothing to do with actual prices, which will rise due to the shortage of oil coming as soon as the US pumps out the last of its reserves.
The market is a casino, where the rich gamble on how much oil will cost in the future.

A year? In Alberta (tar sands like Venezuela) it takes half a decade to get a heavy oil upgrader working and they haven't had their infrastructure neglected for decades.

It's not quite that simple as we lack refining capabilities. But obviously oil markets were far better off before Israel's war that we are fighting for them
