I Started college at Caltech in 1982. Back then the first year was pass/fail. Now it’s the first 2 trimesters. The reason was that almost every student was used to being one of the smartest kids in their high school and getting As without trying very hard. Back in my day Caltech washed out almost 1/4 of the incoming students. I was one of them. It’s a different matter for a state U to do it though.
The dumbing down of American kids started decades ago and I can personally attest that the powers-that-be have been totally successful. In a recent conversation with kids I know who are going into 5th grade and 9th grade, and who have made almost all A's, the 5th grader didn't know where Chicago is the the 9th grader had no idea what a silo is. I am disgusted and terrified in equal measure.

Yes! He sure does!!! His foundation gave out $5 million in trade school scholarships this year!!! A college degree was a good thing back when I went to nursing college, but have watched that change very dramatically over the last few decades. And I’ve said it before, but it bears repeating: unless a student is going into a profession that actually REQUIRES a college degree, I sincerely encourage kids to go into a trade. Many pay very well.
Texas Tech University famously, or not, did not have an alumni association, or rather their alumni were folded into their "Texas Tech Ex-Students Association." I'm an ex-student, or rather an alumnus... no, at the time I graduated, their preferred term was "ex-student," so I'm that. My guess was there were a lot more deep-pocketed non-graduates than alumni and they--really--needed new sports facilities.
One of the very many things I liked about the new University of Austin was their determination to eschew sports programs. And checking into them this week, see that they only consider, for entrance purposes, the results of standardized tests. Of course, given that the SAT has been softened repeatedly over the last 55 years, I don't know how valuable those scores actually are.
Grandson (in Ontario) has been in a Christian school for almost all his school-life. Last January his parents pulled him out for one day per week of homeschooling (with Grandma doing Latin-via-Signal twice a week). September, that moves to completely homeschooled. Not immaterial is that the tuition for 9th grade jumps considerably, and his parents were already not impressed with their ROI. Younger brother apparently will continue at the private school. Will be interesting to see how this shakes out, especially as there are just-turned-3 twins on the first rung of the ladder.
University of Michigan has gotten by for decades on their excellent higher education status, particularly in the medical fields. The University of Michigan Hospitals are among the best in this state…or were. Michigan is known for the “Big House” and football that calls Michigan State, “little brother”. They managed to win a National title again under Jim Harbaugh a few year’s ago, who promptly left amidst scandal. They won a the NCAA men’s basketball tournament championship with the best team money could buy, (thank you NIL money and the transfer portal). Their second year coach, Dusty May, skedaddled for the pros. Most Michigan fans will just say they took what was offered and ran with it, and will look to the next wealth building team and coach. Hail to the Victors! Michigan is located in Ann Arbor, a liberal enclave and nuttier by the minute. Michigan State is no better, liberal and located next to the state capitol. As long as there is a sport’s logo attached to these places, alumni will keep donating, taxpayers will keep funding and we go down the drain.
This is exhibit a of how badly universities are hurting for students. This probably means you can keep your financial aid even if you have only passed one class.

I only read two substacks regularly. One is C&C, heading into 6 year’s here, and Don Surber for his acerbic political wit. Back in the 60s and 70s I recall the rabies vaccines were good for life... If our dog is inside except for daily walks and supervised play, why would I need to keep vaccinating? When my girlfriend was told her puppy needed the Leptospirosis vaccine she asked if the vet knew anyone with a dog that caught it. "Oh, yes, absolutely!" So, she asked how they treat it. "You would have to take your dog to the university's veterinary hospital for 5k treatment, we don't treat them here." Under enormous pressure, she agreed to let them vaccinate her 4 month old puppy for leptospirosis. But, the vet failed to tell her that the vaccine that does not prevent leptospirosis! Six months later her dog was diagnosed with Lepto. Off to the vet school for that 5k treatment. She made the decision after that to stop all vaccines! She gets titers for rabies now! No vaccine has been necessary. Her new (holistic) vet told her that there are suppliments to prevent heartworm on the market so, no need for neurotoxic flea/heartworm pills. We use Amber Natural HWF Clean Heart drops to prevent heartworm. While the packaging makes no such claims, our dog takes the drops and we get him checked for heartworms every year.

The 72 shots are from birth to age 18. It is also way too many. In 1970’s there were 7 to 9 jabs, birth to age 18. So, we have a 700% increase over past 3-4 decades that some are wailing about. This excess pharmaceutical capitalism needs legislation instead of only an EO.

1. In regards to the University of Michigan issue, I read it as "Darn, the Feds are clamping down on colleges and useless degrees, and how kids can't even succeed in those. Our best bet is to make sure kids don't drop out the first year because it is hard, so let's blanket cover the data from the Feds until the kids get socially hooked into coming to ole U of Michigan."
2. If colleges are allowed to 'cover' the grades for one semester with no real pushback, what is to stop them from doing it for the whole year, or even sophomore year too? Their reasoning being "well, kids mature at different rates and the first two years are just the basics so why expose the grades until they get to the meat of their degree course-wise." I don't agree, but I can see down the road a bit.
3. The universities should be at the forefront of pressuring the Feds to stop the H1B abuse. Trump hasn't solved it yet. STEM still getting crushed with cheaper foreign labor, and also IT off-shoring (and more medical tasks as well). 2x-5x tariffs are the only thing that will fix it. Not having a consulting company front a 'fee' one time. The people here still need housing, and a lot are dual incomes, thus pushing up the middle class housing costs. There is no "TAW" yet for visas, and we see how it infects other areas like recent college grads being able to get a job in their STEM field.
4. Pregnant women should never be given a vaccine. End of story. There can never be a double blind placebo controlled ethical study for a jab with pregnant women. So ban shots during that period.
5. Fauci was one of the greedy (power and/or money) pawns to conspire to steal the election. Don't fall for the "slow the spread". That would have to assume that the flu disappeared, there wasn't rampant corruption in what doctors and hospitals were being reimbursed for when "finding" covid, etc. Fauci isn't stupid. He is controlled.
6. If the mRNA is better than nature, and we know it isn't, why isn't the platform at least banned for shots until it can be proven without a doubt to be safe? Paging Kennedy, paging Kennedy. Something stinks.
7. While the settlement Paxton got was good, the costs will be born by the average person who has medical insurance in the end. There is no magic bucket of money that is going to appear. For real justice, there needs to be financial clawbacks from the doctors and support staff who did these horrendous things, along with the corporate toadies who went along with it. The law needs to be updated to have real accountability. This was criminal. People should go to jail.
Just a little more background. True the consulting companies that usually front for the H1B person usually pay them 30%+ less than an American IT person, BUT, that is not the same as the hourly rate that those consulting companies CHARGE the company need the IT work. That rate is usually just a smidge under the total "all in cost" of having an employee on payroll with all the benefits. (But I have seen companies pay for H1B types at rates noticeably higher than an employee rate plus 30% more for benefits, my employer included.) It is fraud at multiple levels. For more 90% of IT, people can be trained up to the level a company is looking for in less than a year. Companies whine about 'not being able to find anyone' when that isn't true in the long run. Without this issue getting fixed, more IT will continue to use foreign labor here, and abroad. And we will see off-soring of even more medical areas to cheap Indian and Eastern Europe labor pools, while middlemen consultant companies get rich.
Higher education is pathetic. But it is high as a kite.

Despite the fact the New York State school districts plan to spend an average of $37,033 per student. This makes New York the highest-spending state on public K-12 education in the country, nearly doubling the national average.
Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Finland, and Estonia, have the highest proficiency rates in the world despite all spending less than $10,000 per child per year.

Dave, "behaviorists" earning extremely high salaries are increasingly " needed" in public schools as out of control behaviors have skyrocketed over the years. Also many more students requiring IEPs (individual education programs) which need management from "special educators" have increased. Throw in there more mental health counselors... all these in addition to classroom teachers. And yes, way too top heavy in administration.
How many of the children in New York schools are non English speaking? I’ve seen this in Texas schools where children come to school barely able to speak English and are put in the class appropriate for their age and are unable to function.
The first semester of college SHOULD be an eye-opening experience for freshmen. I graduated high school with a modest 3.3 GPA and hardly ever studied much. So, when the new freedom of college came along, with classes every other day at most, man, this would be a breeze! My first semester GPA: 2.0. So, I immediately sought out psychiatric therapy...NOT. This was at a junior college, and the next three semesters, I went 3.6, 3.7, and 3.8. I was newly motivated by my first semester grades, and it spurred me on for the rest of college days. Fortunately, I will not be around in 30 years to find out how this asinine crap plays out in the oncoming lack of adults in society.

The summer of 2021 Naples, FL was hit hard by the delta variant. We lost every patient who was placed on ECMO except for one. My husband survived but only by having a double lung transplant. My son is entering his senior year and was going to apply there just to annoy his sister, who's a Penn State grad. Now I'm going to tell him to not waste the application fee - we need to see their 2027 application rates drop drastically.

I Started college at Caltech in 1982. Back then the first year was pass/fail. Now it’s the first 2 trimesters. The reason was that almost every student was used to being one of the smartest kids in their high school and getting As without trying very hard. Back in my day Caltech washed out almost 1/4 of the incoming students. I was one of them. It’s a different matter for a state U to do it though.
The dumbing down of American kids started decades ago and I can personally attest that the powers-that-be have been totally successful. In a recent conversation with kids I know who are going into 5th grade and 9th grade, and who have made almost all A's, the 5th grader didn't know where Chicago is the the 9th grader had no idea what a silo is. I am disgusted and terrified in equal measure.

Yes! He sure does!!! His foundation gave out $5 million in trade school scholarships this year!!! A college degree was a good thing back when I went to nursing college, but have watched that change very dramatically over the last few decades. And I’ve said it before, but it bears repeating: unless a student is going into a profession that actually REQUIRES a college degree, I sincerely encourage kids to go into a trade. Many pay very well.
I got my Doctorate in Animal Science in 1980 when it wasn’t ridiculous like today. Hopefully the STEM courses aren’t this stupid.
Texas Tech University famously, or not, did not have an alumni association, or rather their alumni were folded into their "Texas Tech Ex-Students Association." I'm an ex-student, or rather an alumnus... no, at the time I graduated, their preferred term was "ex-student," so I'm that. My guess was there were a lot more deep-pocketed non-graduates than alumni and they--really--needed new sports facilities.
One of the very many things I liked about the new University of Austin was their determination to eschew sports programs. And checking into them this week, see that they only consider, for entrance purposes, the results of standardized tests. Of course, given that the SAT has been softened repeatedly over the last 55 years, I don't know how valuable those scores actually are.
Grandson (in Ontario) has been in a Christian school for almost all his school-life. Last January his parents pulled him out for one day per week of homeschooling (with Grandma doing Latin-via-Signal twice a week). September, that moves to completely homeschooled. Not immaterial is that the tuition for 9th grade jumps considerably, and his parents were already not impressed with their ROI. Younger brother apparently will continue at the private school. Will be interesting to see how this shakes out, especially as there are just-turned-3 twins on the first rung of the ladder.
University of Michigan has gotten by for decades on their excellent higher education status, particularly in the medical fields. The University of Michigan Hospitals are among the best in this state…or were. Michigan is known for the “Big House” and football that calls Michigan State, “little brother”. They managed to win a National title again under Jim Harbaugh a few year’s ago, who promptly left amidst scandal. They won a the NCAA men’s basketball tournament championship with the best team money could buy, (thank you NIL money and the transfer portal). Their second year coach, Dusty May, skedaddled for the pros. Most Michigan fans will just say they took what was offered and ran with it, and will look to the next wealth building team and coach. Hail to the Victors! Michigan is located in Ann Arbor, a liberal enclave and nuttier by the minute. Michigan State is no better, liberal and located next to the state capitol. As long as there is a sport’s logo attached to these places, alumni will keep donating, taxpayers will keep funding and we go down the drain.

We know the wheels of justice turn so damn slowly but we finally see what I would call real justice applied to Texas Children's hospital ad the evil "doctors" who tortured and disfigured children for money and for their own sick beliefs (although honestly if it were up to me they'd be deep in a prison forever, or hanging from a yard arm.) The Federal government is not finished with Fauci and Florida has opened an investigation as are other States. There is so much more coming. Back in the 60s and 70s I recall the rabies vaccines were good for life... If our dog is inside except for daily walks and supervised play, why would I need to keep vaccinating? When my girlfriend was told her puppy needed the Leptospirosis vaccine she asked if the vet knew anyone with a dog that caught it. "Oh, yes, absolutely!" So, she asked how they treat it. "You would have to take your dog to the university's veterinary hospital for 5k treatment, we don't treat them here." Under enormous pressure, she agreed to let them vaccinate her 4 month old puppy for leptospirosis. But, the vet failed to tell her that the vaccine that does not prevent leptospirosis! Six months later her dog was diagnosed with Lepto. Off to the vet school for that 5k treatment. She made the decision after that to stop all vaccines! She gets titers for rabies now! No vaccine has been necessary. Her new (holistic) vet told her that there are suppliments to prevent heartworm on the market so, no need for neurotoxic flea/heartworm pills. We use Amber Natural HWF Clean Heart drops to prevent heartworm. While the packaging makes no such claims, our dog takes the drops and we get him checked for heartworms every year.

Thoughts:
1. In regards to the University of Michigan issue, I read it as "Darn, the Feds are clamping down on colleges and useless degrees, and how kids can't even succeed in those. Our best bet is to make sure kids don't drop out the first year because it is hard, so let's blanket cover the data from the Feds until the kids get socially hooked into coming to ole U of Michigan."
2. If colleges are allowed to 'cover' the grades for one semester with no real pushback, what is to stop them from doing it for the whole year, or even sophomore year too? Their reasoning being "well, kids mature at different rates and the first two years are just the basics so why expose the grades until they get to the meat of their degree course-wise." I don't agree, but I can see down the road a bit.
3. The universities should be at the forefront of pressuring the Feds to stop the H1B abuse. Trump hasn't solved it yet. STEM still getting crushed with cheaper foreign labor, and also IT off-shoring (and more medical tasks as well). 2x-5x tariffs are the only thing that will fix it. Not having a consulting company front a 'fee' one time. The people here still need housing, and a lot are dual incomes, thus pushing up the middle class housing costs. There is no "TAW" yet for visas, and we see how it infects other areas like recent college grads being able to get a job in their STEM field.
4. Pregnant women should never be given a vaccine. End of story. There can never be a double blind placebo controlled ethical study for a jab with pregnant women. So ban shots during that period.
5. Fauci was one of the greedy (power and/or money) pawns to conspire to steal the election. Don't fall for the "slow the spread". That would have to assume that the flu disappeared, there wasn't rampant corruption in what doctors and hospitals were being reimbursed for when "finding" covid, etc. Fauci isn't stupid. He is controlled.
6. If the mRNA is better than nature, and we know it isn't, why isn't the platform at least banned for shots until it can be proven without a doubt to be safe? Paging Kennedy, paging Kennedy. Something stinks.
7. While the settlement Paxton got was good, the costs will be born by the average person who has medical insurance in the end. There is no magic bucket of money that is going to appear. For real justice, there needs to be financial clawbacks from the doctors and support staff who did these horrendous things, along with the corporate toadies who went along with it. The law needs to be updated to have real accountability. This was criminal. People should go to jail.

True the consulting companies that usually front for the H1B person usually pay them 30%+ less than an American IT person, BUT, that is not the same as the hourly rate that those consulting companies CHARGE the company need the IT work. That rate is usually just a smidge under the total "all in cost" of having an employee on payroll with all the benefits. (But I have seen companies pay for H1B types at rates noticeably higher than an employee rate plus 30% more for benefits, my employer included.) It is fraud at multiple levels. For more 90% of IT, people can be trained up to the level a company is looking for in less than a year. Companies whine about 'not being able to find anyone' when that isn't true in the long run. Without this issue getting fixed, more IT will continue to use foreign labor here, and abroad. And we will see off-soring of even more medical areas to cheap Indian and Eastern Europe labor pools, while middlemen consultant companies get rich.

Dave, "behaviorists" earning extremely high salaries are increasingly " needed" in public schools as out of control behaviors have skyrocketed over the years. Also many more students requiring IEPs (individual education programs) which need management from "special educators" have increased. Throw in there more mental health counselors... all these in addition to classroom teachers. And yes, way too top heavy in administration.

How many of the children in New York schools are non English speaking? I’ve seen this in Texas schools where children come to school barely able to speak English and are put in the class appropriate for their age and are unable to function.
The rest of the class suffers because of non-English speaking students. All resources go to the illegals.
That is why NY votes in Muslim communists because they have been purposefully dumbed down and made catatonic.

The first semester of college SHOULD be an eye-opening experience for freshmen. I graduated high school with a modest 3.3 GPA and hardly ever studied much. So, when the new freedom of college came along, with classes every other day at most, man, this would be a breeze! My first semester GPA: 2.0. So, I immediately sought out psychiatric therapy...NOT. This was at a junior college, and the next three semesters, I went 3.6, 3.7, and 3.8. I was newly motivated by my first semester grades, and it spurred me on for the rest of college days. Fortunately, I will not be around in 30 years to find out how this asinine crap plays out in the oncoming lack of adults in society.
I suspect circumstances may deteriorate to the point people must acquire meaningful survival skills.
Enough of this fake inflated nonreality - back to the land!

My son is entering his senior year and was going to apply there just to annoy his sister, who's a Penn State grad. Now I'm going to tell him to not waste the application fee - we need to see their 2027 application rates drop drastically.
I'd like to also point out that the announced this AFTER the common app opened up on August 1. So lots of kids already applied who maybe would have decided not to after hearing this news.
