My church has been going through the One-Year Bible together (16,000 copies were distributed to both the congregation and anyone who walked through the doors who wanted one from Christmas until just recently). It slices things up in daily readings in the Old Testament, the New, Psalms, and Proverbs. It's available in several different versions, I believe.

JT - As I was reviewing in my head the reasons for a college degree that would be useful in the era of AI, teaching came to mind. Then my thoughts went as yours did - education could look very different, very soon.
I Started college at Caltech in 1982. Back then the first year was pass/fail. Now it’s the first 2 trimesters. The reason was that almost every student was used to being one of the smartest kids in their high school and getting As without trying very hard. Back in my day Caltech washed out almost 1/4 of the incoming students. I was one of them. It’s a different matter for a state U to do it though.
now that was an interesting fix to a real problem. My roommate had been valedictorian of her class. Problem was she came from a poor white working class area where that accomplishment ill prepared her for a school where the kids came from rigorous high schools. I went to a decent high school but barely graduated. Suffice to say, I had to work three times as hard as classmates. In hindsight, it wasn't a good fit. As the late Walter Williams noted, students are better off going where they fit in academically. One can become grounded and move up, but once pushed off a platform because the bar was too high, it is tough to climb back on. While he gave Black students as an example, it fits for everyone.
The dumbing down of American kids started decades ago and I can personally attest that the powers-that-be have been totally successful. In a recent conversation with kids I know who are going into 5th grade and 9th grade, and who have made almost all A's, the 5th grader didn't know where Chicago is the the 9th grader had no idea what a silo is. I am disgusted and terrified in equal measure.

Yes! He sure does!!! His foundation gave out $5 million in trade school scholarships this year!!! A college degree was a good thing back when I went to nursing college, but have watched that change very dramatically over the last few decades. And I’ve said it before, but it bears repeating: unless a student is going into a profession that actually REQUIRES a college degree, I sincerely encourage kids to go into a trade. Many pay very well.

Their second year coach, Dusty May, skedaddled for the pros. Most Michigan fans will just say they took what was offered and ran with it, and will look to the next wealth building team and coach. I was roundly attacked and shunned by multiple friends, when I asserted that covid would turn out to be no worse than the flu and also that going outside regularly for fresh air and sunshine have been known historically as effective treatments for respiratory viruses, in response to the absurdity of lockdowns.
People I had known for years were intensely abusive online and disrespectful in person, some screaming in my face about horse paste, in response to me saying ivermectin was touted previously as a miracle drug, by Nature, which it was.
I was shouted down in the street for not wearing a mask, by people wearing masks. They were oblivious to the contradiction in logic, that if masks protected them, my not wearing one should only endanger me.
Citing studies online that showed people got more infections in winter months, due to often being clustered inside with others during those months, fell on deaf, hysterical and accusatory ears. I deleted Facebook entirely over it, a positive side effect, I realized later.

They, like Harvard, will eventually learn. First employers will stop hiring their graduates out of lack of trust and eventually students will stop going there if they want a good job.
One can hope. When I spoke to my son , U of M LSA grad and now an attorney, he said he hadn’t heard about Michigan’s announcement but wasn’t too surprised. But then he told me his son is going to a boarding school with cost of 69k a year where freshman students do not receive grades! Supposedly he is going to that type of school to receive a more rigorous education! He is entering as a sophomore and class size is 12 students. Of course, I want only the best for my grandson but hard to believe this is where he will receive it.
I don't believe there is anyone I trust that much with my children. I hope your grandson wanted to go there. 12 students per class IS an excellent student/teacher ratio.

I only read two substacks regularly. One is C&C, heading into 6 year’s here, and Don Surber for his acerbic political wit. I occasionally read others but even in retirement, life’s to short to spend my time becoming anxious or what we feel is righteous anger. It may be, but “nothing is new under the sun”, including evil and wickedness.
I love Don, but he turns me away with his often dominating focus on yeah, Israel! Believe it or not, some significant majority of Americans don't think of Israel as the most important thing in America. All things in moderation guidelines don't seem to apply to that...
I do always check back in after "some time away to reflect," though. Man has a unique and entertaining and insight into the world.

Back in the 60s and 70s I recall the rabies vaccines were good for life... If our dog is inside except for daily walks and supervised play, why would I need to keep vaccinating? When my girlfriend was told her puppy needed the Leptospirosis vaccine she asked if the vet knew anyone with a dog that caught it. "Oh, yes, absolutely!" So, she asked how they treat it. "You would have to take your dog to the university's veterinary hospital for 5k treatment, we don't treat them here." Under enormous pressure, she agreed to let them vaccinate her 4 month old puppy for leptospirosis. But, the vet failed to tell her that the vaccine that does not prevent leptospirosis! Six months later her dog was diagnosed with Lepto. Off to the vet school for that 5k treatment. She made the decision after that to stop all vaccines! She gets titers for rabies now! No vaccine has been necessary. Her new (holistic) vet told her that there are suppliments to prevent heartworm on the market so, no need for neurotoxic flea/heartworm pills. We use Amber Natural HWF Clean Heart drops to prevent heartworm. While the packaging makes no such claims, our dog takes the drops and we get him checked for heartworms every year.
A good friend was a vet here in Florida. Florida had a 1 year rabies shot for years. Our friend said it was a scam. The same shot elsewhere was a 3 year shot. Florida recognized other state's shot. So, when we visited Michigan - I moved away 52 years ago- we'd get the dog vaccinated there, bring the certificate to Florida and get his license.

1. In regards to the University of Michigan issue, I read it as "Darn, the Feds are clamping down on colleges and useless degrees, and how kids can't even succeed in those. Our best bet is to make sure kids don't drop out the first year because it is hard, so let's blanket cover the data from the Feds until the kids get socially hooked into coming to ole U of Michigan."
2. If colleges are allowed to 'cover' the grades for one semester with no real pushback, what is to stop them from doing it for the whole year, or even sophomore year too? Their reasoning being "well, kids mature at different rates and the first two years are just the basics so why expose the grades until they get to the meat of their degree course-wise." I don't agree, but I can see down the road a bit.
3. The universities should be at the forefront of pressuring the Feds to stop the H1B abuse. Trump hasn't solved it yet. STEM still getting crushed with cheaper foreign labor, and also IT off-shoring (and more medical tasks as well). 2x-5x tariffs are the only thing that will fix it. Not having a consulting company front a 'fee' one time. The people here still need housing, and a lot are dual incomes, thus pushing up the middle class housing costs. There is no "TAW" yet for visas, and we see how it infects other areas like recent college grads being able to get a job in their STEM field.
4. Pregnant women should never be given a vaccine. End of story. There can never be a double blind placebo controlled ethical study for a jab with pregnant women. So ban shots during that period.
5. Fauci was one of the greedy (power and/or money) pawns to conspire to steal the election. Don't fall for the "slow the spread". That would have to assume that the flu disappeared, there wasn't rampant corruption in what doctors and hospitals were being reimbursed for when "finding" covid, etc. Fauci isn't stupid. He is controlled.
6. If the mRNA is better than nature, and we know it isn't, why isn't the platform at least banned for shots until it can be proven without a doubt to be safe? Paging Kennedy, paging Kennedy. Something stinks.
7. While the settlement Paxton got was good, the costs will be born by the average person who has medical insurance in the end. There is no magic bucket of money that is going to appear. For real justice, there needs to be financial clawbacks from the doctors and support staff who did these horrendous things, along with the corporate toadies who went along with it. The law needs to be updated to have real accountability. This was criminal. People should go to jail.
Just a little more background. True the consulting companies that usually front for the H1B person usually pay them 30%+ less than an American IT person, BUT, that is not the same as the hourly rate that those consulting companies CHARGE the company need the IT work. That rate is usually just a smidge under the total "all in cost" of having an employee on payroll with all the benefits. (But I have seen companies pay for H1B types at rates noticeably higher than an employee rate plus 30% more for benefits, my employer included.) It is fraud at multiple levels. For more 90% of IT, people can be trained up to the level a company is looking for in less than a year. Companies whine about 'not being able to find anyone' when that isn't true in the long run. Without this issue getting fixed, more IT will continue to use foreign labor here, and abroad. And we will see off-soring of even more medical areas to cheap Indian and Eastern Europe labor pools, while middlemen consultant companies get rich.

The first semester of college SHOULD be an eye-opening experience for freshmen. I graduated high school with a modest 3.3 GPA and hardly ever studied much. So, when the new freedom of college came along, with classes every other day at most, man, this would be a breeze! My first semester GPA: 2.0. So, I immediately sought out psychiatric therapy...NOT. This was at a junior college, and the next three semesters, I went 3.6, 3.7, and 3.8. I was newly motivated by my first semester grades, and it spurred me on for the rest of college days. Fortunately, I will not be around in 30 years to find out how this asinine crap plays out in the oncoming lack of adults in society.
Same experience. I easily made great grades and passed exams in H.S. then went to a competative college and absolutely struggled my first semester preferring to establish a social life. My second semester I learned to study and got over a 4.0 (my college gave out A+s). Accepting and overcoming failure is part of growing up and becoming an adult!

I had a journalism law class with a very popular but very tough professor who told us at the beginning of the class that he would be making it as difficult as possible for us so that only those who really wanted to stay would do so. Today I'm reading Isaiah 40-42, as a year long complete reading of the Bible. If one prefers to listen to it, I recommend the Alexander Scourby narration of all the books, on that YouTube channel; he was masterful at reading the hard to understand books like Chronicles and Kings, and somehow pronounced the names correctly.
Read Dennis Prager's Rational Bible Series. It's life-changing. Charlie Kirk subscribed to Dennis Prager's Pragertopia, where he does a chapter-by-chapter breakdown of the first five books.
My church has been going through the One-Year Bible together (16,000 copies were distributed to both the congregation and anyone who walked through the doors who wanted one from Christmas until just recently). It slices things up in daily readings in the Old Testament, the New, Psalms, and Proverbs. It's available in several different versions, I believe.

I Started college at Caltech in 1982. Back then the first year was pass/fail. Now it’s the first 2 trimesters. The reason was that almost every student was used to being one of the smartest kids in their high school and getting As without trying very hard. Back in my day Caltech washed out almost 1/4 of the incoming students. I was one of them. It’s a different matter for a state U to do it though.
now that was an interesting fix to a real problem. My roommate had been valedictorian of her class. Problem was she came from a poor white working class area where that accomplishment ill prepared her for a school where the kids came from rigorous high schools. I went to a decent high school but barely graduated. Suffice to say, I had to work three times as hard as classmates. In hindsight, it wasn't a good fit. As the late Walter Williams noted, students are better off going where they fit in academically. One can become grounded and move up, but once pushed off a platform because the bar was too high, it is tough to climb back on. While he gave Black students as an example, it fits for everyone.
The dumbing down of American kids started decades ago and I can personally attest that the powers-that-be have been totally successful. In a recent conversation with kids I know who are going into 5th grade and 9th grade, and who have made almost all A's, the 5th grader didn't know where Chicago is the the 9th grader had no idea what a silo is. I am disgusted and terrified in equal measure.
I'm shocked and amazed that UofI ppl have no clue about the difference between corn and beans! But are, thankfully, frightened of being out in the country. 😁 I have no clue about Ch'tgo streets and night life.

A college degree was a good thing back when I went to nursing college, but have watched that change very dramatically over the last few decades. People I had known for years were intensely abusive online and disrespectful in person, some screaming in my face about horse paste, in response to me saying ivermectin was touted previously as a miracle drug, by Nature, which it was.
I was shouted down in the street for not wearing a mask, by people wearing masks. They were oblivious to the contradiction in logic, that if masks protected them, my not wearing one should only endanger me.
Citing studies online that showed people got more infections in winter months, due to often being clustered inside with others during those months, fell on deaf, hysterical and accusatory ears. I deleted Facebook entirely over it, a positive side effect, I realized later.

One can hope. When I spoke to my son , U of M LSA grad and now an attorney, he said he hadn’t heard about Michigan’s announcement but wasn’t too surprised. But then he told me his son is going to a boarding school with cost of 69k a year where freshman students do not receive grades! Supposedly he is going to that type of school to receive a more rigorous education! He is entering as a sophomore and class size is 12 students. Of course, I want only the best for my grandson but hard to believe this is where he will receive it.

I only read two substacks regularly. One is C&C, heading into 6 year’s here, and Don Surber for his acerbic political wit. I occasionally read others but even in retirement, life’s to short to spend my time becoming anxious or what we feel is righteous anger. It may be, but “nothing is new under the sun”, including evil and wickedness.

He is so generous as he allows Everyone else to read six days a week for free. I really enjoyed his recent interview with dirty jobs Mike Rowe. And as I understand it, it takes Jeff 4 to 5 hours to write each post. I am really not kidding that he has saved so many lives just with getting us the information we needed to make Informed consent on so many things. And he started the ball rolling here in Florida arguing and winning the first cases, proving the unconstitutionality of us to be forced to wear masks. I can't possibly express my gratitude in how he weaves law, politics, medicine, faith, and this daily thing we call life.

"poor in spirit" means having deep spiritual humility and recognizing one's own total helplessness, sinfulness, and complete and total inability to earn salvation without God. The Bible story about the tax collector and pharisee praying in Luke 18 contrast the tax collector (God have mercy on me, a sinner) vs the pharisee (God I thank you that I am not like other people). The tax collector is humble, poor in spirit, justified by his faith. The pharisee is prideful, self-righteous, boastful, thinks he's justified by his works.

Thank God that accountability is starting to come for us. We know the wheels of justice turn so damn slowly but we finally see what I would call real justice applied to Texas Children's hospital ad the evil "doctors" who tortured and disfigured children for money and for their own sick beliefs (although honestly if it were up to me they'd be deep in a prison forever, or hanging from a yard arm.) The Federal government is not finished with Fauci and Florida has opened an investigation as are other States. There is so much more coming. Back in the 60s and 70s I recall the rabies vaccines were good for life... If our dog is inside except for daily walks and supervised play, why would I need to keep vaccinating? When my girlfriend was told her puppy needed the Leptospirosis vaccine she asked if the vet knew anyone with a dog that caught it. "Oh, yes, absolutely!" So, she asked how they treat it. "You would have to take your dog to the university's veterinary hospital for 5k treatment, we don't treat them here." Under enormous pressure, she agreed to let them vaccinate her 4 month old puppy for leptospirosis. But, the vet failed to tell her that the vaccine that does not prevent leptospirosis! Six months later her dog was diagnosed with Lepto. Off to the vet school for that 5k treatment. She made the decision after that to stop all vaccines! She gets titers for rabies now! No vaccine has been necessary. Her new (holistic) vet told her that there are suppliments to prevent heartworm on the market so, no need for neurotoxic flea/heartworm pills. We use Amber Natural HWF Clean Heart drops to prevent heartworm. While the packaging makes no such claims, our dog takes the drops and we get him checked for heartworms every year.
A good friend was a vet here in Florida. Florida had a 1 year rabies shot for years. Our friend said it was a scam. The same shot elsewhere was a 3 year shot. Florida recognized other state's shot. So, when we visited Michigan - I moved away 52 years ago- we'd get the dog vaccinated there, bring the certificate to Florida and get his license.
Our last dog had his vaccinations. We traveled and thought he would need them. Died of cancer. We are sure it was vaccination driven...He died 2 years ago- so we learned about vaccinations after it was too late for him. Covid taught me a lot.

Thoughts:
1. In regards to the University of Michigan issue, I read it as "Darn, the Feds are clamping down on colleges and useless degrees, and how kids can't even succeed in those. Our best bet is to make sure kids don't drop out the first year because it is hard, so let's blanket cover the data from the Feds until the kids get socially hooked into coming to ole U of Michigan."
2. If colleges are allowed to 'cover' the grades for one semester with no real pushback, what is to stop them from doing it for the whole year, or even sophomore year too? Their reasoning being "well, kids mature at different rates and the first two years are just the basics so why expose the grades until they get to the meat of their degree course-wise." I don't agree, but I can see down the road a bit.
3. The universities should be at the forefront of pressuring the Feds to stop the H1B abuse. Trump hasn't solved it yet. STEM still getting crushed with cheaper foreign labor, and also IT off-shoring (and more medical tasks as well). 2x-5x tariffs are the only thing that will fix it. Not having a consulting company front a 'fee' one time. The people here still need housing, and a lot are dual incomes, thus pushing up the middle class housing costs. There is no "TAW" yet for visas, and we see how it infects other areas like recent college grads being able to get a job in their STEM field.
4. Pregnant women should never be given a vaccine. End of story. There can never be a double blind placebo controlled ethical study for a jab with pregnant women. So ban shots during that period.
5. Fauci was one of the greedy (power and/or money) pawns to conspire to steal the election. Don't fall for the "slow the spread". That would have to assume that the flu disappeared, there wasn't rampant corruption in what doctors and hospitals were being reimbursed for when "finding" covid, etc. Fauci isn't stupid. He is controlled.
6. If the mRNA is better than nature, and we know it isn't, why isn't the platform at least banned for shots until it can be proven without a doubt to be safe? Paging Kennedy, paging Kennedy. Something stinks.

Just a little more background. True the consulting companies that usually front for the H1B person usually pay them 30%+ less than an American IT person, BUT, that is not the same as the hourly rate that those consulting companies CHARGE the company need the IT work. That rate is usually just a smidge under the total "all in cost" of having an employee on payroll with all the benefits. (But I have seen companies pay for H1B types at rates noticeably higher than an employee rate plus 30% more for benefits, my employer included.) It is fraud at multiple levels. For more 90% of IT, people can be trained up to the level a company is looking for in less than a year. Companies whine about 'not being able to find anyone' when that isn't true in the long run. Without this issue getting fixed, more IT will continue to use foreign labor here, and abroad. And we will see off-soring of even more medical areas to cheap Indian and Eastern Europe labor pools, while middlemen consultant companies get rich.

Dave, "behaviorists" earning extremely high salaries are increasingly " needed" in public schools as out of control behaviors have skyrocketed over the years. Also many more students requiring IEPs (individual education programs) which need management from "special educators" have increased. Throw in there more mental health counselors... all these in addition to classroom teachers. And yes, way too top heavy in administration.

How many of the children in New York schools are non English speaking? I’ve seen this in Texas schools where children come to school barely able to speak English and are put in the class appropriate for their age and are unable to function.
The rest of the class suffers because of non-English speaking students. All resources go to the illegals.

The first semester of college SHOULD be an eye-opening experience for freshmen. I graduated high school with a modest 3.3 GPA and hardly ever studied much. So, when the new freedom of college came along, with classes every other day at most, man, this would be a breeze! My first semester GPA: 2.0. So, I immediately sought out psychiatric therapy...NOT. This was at a junior college, and the next three semesters, I went 3.6, 3.7, and 3.8. I was newly motivated by my first semester grades, and it spurred me on for the rest of college days. Fortunately, I will not be around in 30 years to find out how this asinine crap plays out in the oncoming lack of adults in society.
Same experience. I easily made great grades and passed exams in H.S. then went to a competative college and absolutely struggled my first semester preferring to establish a social life. My second semester I learned to study and got over a 4.0 (my college gave out A+s). Accepting and overcoming failure is part of growing up and becoming an adult!

My freshman year at ISU they purposely overbooked rooms, setting up bunks in lounges knowing how many would drop out the first semester.
I had a journalism law class with a very popular but very tough professor who told us at the beginning of the class that he would be making it as difficult as possible for us so that only those who really wanted to stay would do so. I stayed, and to this day, 50 years later, I look back on him as one of the best teachers I ever had. Also got a A in the class!

My son is entering his senior year and was going to apply there just to annoy his sister, who's a Penn State grad. Now I'm going to tell him to not waste the application fee - we need to see their 2027 application rates drop drastically.
I'd like to also point out that the announced this AFTER the common app opened up on August 1. So lots of kids already applied who maybe would have decided not to after hearing this news.
