In fairness, I've never been a teenage girl, or the parent of one. But I was a teenage boy long ago. Let's look at the issue from the point of view of a hypothetical well-adjusted teenage girl with something approaching "traditional" values. She would love to meet and data a young man with even an outside chance of becoming a potential breadwinner and father for her children. Perhaps being a housewife doesn't seem such a down-market choice and the $200,000 in student debt and the MA in Women's Studies doesn't have the allure it does for many of her girlfriends. All well and good until she looks at what's on offer...well, there aren't a hell of a lot of boys that remotely meet what would have been fairly modest standards in Grandma's day. Result: Being a green-haired Lesbian with a box of Franzia in the fridge and a passel of cats to greet her each evening doesn't seem like such a bad choice.
