We are visiting our daughter and family and our son and family in MN today. A precious new grand daughter arrived this am at 5:05. She is our twelveth grandchild. I feel your pain and angst. The girls pictured here playing joyfully in a New Mexico river had no idea they were caught in the radioactive fallout from the world's first atomic bomb test. On July 16, 1945, thirteen-year-old Barbara Kent (center) and her fellow dance camp students thought the white flakes drifting from the sky were snow -- an inexplicable summer miracle. "We were grabbing all of this white, which we thought was snow, and we were putting it all over our faces," Kent later recalled. "But the strange thing, instead of being cold like snow, it was hot. And we all thought, 'Well, the reason it's hot is because it's summer.'" It wasn't snow. It was fallout from the Manhattan Project's Trinity test, detonated just 40 miles away. Of the 12 girls at that camp, only two would live to see their 40th birthday.
That morning, the girls had been jolted awake at 5:30 AM when the explosion shook their cabin so violently that those in top bunks fell to the floor. Their dance instructor, Karma Deane, rushed them outside, thinking a water heater had exploded. Later that day, when the mysterious "hot snow" began falling, the excited girls changed into their swimsuits and spent the afternoon playing in the river, catching the flakes on their tongues and rubbing them on their faces. Government officials later told the community the explosion had been at a dump and assured everyone that everything was fine.
Kent wouldn't learn the truth for another ten years. "It was so wrong of the government not to evacuate everyone when they knew this was going to happen," she said. "They never told us so we played in the thing that killed us." Kent herself survived multiple cancers -- including endometrial cancer, skin cancers, and thyroid cancer requiring the removal of her thyroid -- before passing away in 2024. Her mother, who was staying nearby, died of a brain tumor.
The Trinity test was part of the top-secret Manhattan Project to develop the world's first atomic bomb during World War II. Nearly half a million people lived within a 150-mile radius of the test site -- some as close as 12 miles away. None were warned or evacuated. The radioactive fallout contaminated water, crops, and livestock across the region, with effects lasting decades. More than seventy years later, radiation at the site remains about ten times higher than normal background levels.
Tina Cordova, co-founder of the Tularosa Basin Downwinders Consortium, described the affected communities as having been "relegated to a sort of nothingness as if we don't count." The toll was staggering: one Tularosa woman compiled a list of 285 people she knew who died from cancer in the decades following the test -- all from a small town of a few thousand people just 45 miles from the blast site.
In 1990, Congress passed the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA) to provide $50,000 compensation to "downwinders" exposed to nuclear testing, but it only covered communities in parts of Arizona, Nevada, and Utah, not New Mexico. "This thing really caused so much suffering," Kent said, "and the government never wanted to acknowledge anything."
New Mexicans were finally included in July 2025 -- 35 years after RECA passed, and 80 years almost to the day after Trinity. The expansion offers $100,000 to people who lived, worked, or went to school in New Mexico for at least a year between September 1944 and November 1962 and developed one of 19 qualifying cancers. Just a small observation from my corner of rural America where I am surrounded on all sides by Amish farms. These families typically have on average of 9 healthy, well adjusted, rather clever children who grow up in extremely stable homes and who generally marry around age 21 to the first girl they get permission from the ministry to ask for her hand. And then go on to have 9 children of their own. Children are NEVER told anything about sex. It is forbidden to even mention pregnancy or discuss things as innocuous as due dates before those under 15 much less more details. I mean it when I say no one mentions the mother with the huge belly sticking out. School is not segregated by gender but after graduation at 13, boys and girls do not hang out together. They donāt date. They dress with modesty in mind. How they figure everything out is a mystery to me but publicly they are very discrete. Sex is simply not front and center of their life. And thatās why they are normal and we are not!

I said it was "overly-close" mating, not over-mating (did you misread it and then fly off the handle?) -- meaning the husband /wife relationships are too close genetically -- they both have a high risk of carrying any of the mutations from the original Anabaptists. Put both carriers together, and any children of the union could be in genetic trouble with getting a double-whammy of a specific problem gene.
It is due to the small numbers of original Amish and the fact that the same gene pool continues to circulate without new blood/DNA. Along with any new mutations You can go only so far on that before the odds become stacked against you. They also have large families, meaning higher risk.

I have read of sexual abuse problems in Amish communities. These tend to show-up a great deal in all overly religious communities because they try to cut-off acknowledgement of one side of human life, and it comes back to bite them

There are positive things about the Amish worth acknowledging, even with the valid criticisms on the table:
They actually live their values. The Amish don't preach simplicity while hoarding wealth. They don't talk about community while isolating in suburbs. They don't claim to reject materialism while upgrading their iPhone every year. Whatever you think of their beliefs, the consistency between what they say and how they live is rare.
Zero government dependence. No Social Security (they're exempt), no Medicare, no welfare, no food stamps. They take care of their own elderly, their own sick, their own poor. When a barn burns down, the entire community shows up the next morning and rebuilds it , no FEMA, no insurance adjuster, no GoFundMe. That level of mutual aid is almost extinct in modern America.
Mental health outcomes. Despite the shunning issue, Amish communities have significantly lower rates of suicide (outside of shunning cases), depression, and anxiety compared to the general population. Their suicide rate overall is well below the national average. The social embeddedness (everyone has a role, everyone is needed ) is protective in ways modern mental health professionals are just starting to understand.
They build things that last. Amish furniture, construction, and craftsmanship are genuinely superior. Not in a "rustic charm" way, in a "this table will outlast your grandchildren" way. They didn't forget how to do things the hard way, and that skillset is increasingly valuable as mass-produced garbage floods the market.
No school shootings. No opioid crisis. No homeless encampments. Their communities have problems, but not the ones destroying modern America. Kids aren't on SSRIs at eight years old. Teenagers aren't scrolling TikTok for six hours a day. Nobody's dying of fentanyl behind the barn.
Environmental footprint. Small-scale organic farming, local consumption, minimal waste, horse-drawn transport. They've been living the "sustainable" lifestyle environmentalists preach about for 300 years, without the condescension or the private jets to climate conferences.
They don't bother anyone. The Amish don't protest. They don't sue. They don't demand laws requiring you to live like them. They just want to be left alone. In an era where every lifestyle minority demands validation and accommodation, there's something respectable about a group whose entire political platform is "please ignore us."
They survived. Most intentional communities collapse within a generation. The Amish have maintained their way of life for over 300 years through industrialization, world wars, the internet, and everything else modernity threw at them. That's not nothing.
You can critique the control, the shunning, the limitations but still recognize there are things about their model that work better than ours.
In small numbers, and with limited opportunities. They do not turn out doctors, engineers or many of the other people we rely on. And they rely on too, in many ways, The Amish use the infrastructures such as roadways that non-Amish built. The military protect the Amish even if they are not involved in it.

There are problems within Amish communities too. What you call "shunning" is done not just to criminal elements, but to normal individuals who question or dissent from the groupthink narrative; in that sense, shunning is very terrible thing to do to others -- especially from a community claiming to be so holy. The genetic bottleneck issue in small populations isn't caused by incest, it's basic population genetics. Any isolated group with a limited founder population will see recessive disorders concentrate over generations. The Amish don't fit:
No single leader. Each church district is autonomous, led by local bishops and ministers chosen by lot. There's no Amish pope.
They don't recruit. You're born into it or you're not. Cults expand; the Amish just sustain.
Rumspringa is the literal opposite of cult behavior. Teenagers are encouraged to go experience the outside world and then choose whether to commit. About 85-90% come back. That's not mind control ā that's a community people actually want to belong to.
Leaving is hard socially but physically unrestricted. You walk away, you're out. No compounds, no armed guards, no re-education camps.
Finances are family-based, not funneled to a leader. No private jets, no celebrity pastors.
What they actually are: an ethnoreligious group ā a high-demand, traditionalist Christian community with strict boundaries. You can argue those boundaries are too controlling, that the shunning is cruel, that the lifestyle is stifling. Fair criticisms. But none of that makes it a cult.
Words mean things. Not every insular religious group is a cult just because they dress weird and reject modernity.

You need not have a specific leader for a cult. The Jehovah's Witnesses and the Mormons have bodies of leaders rather than a single one. The Plymouth Brethren have appointed a few top bananas over the years, but they still have a sub-hierarchy of lesser types.
An authority can also come from a book or a code. The Amish follow an unwritten code of behavior called the Ordnung, which can become pretty rule-bound depending on the specific community. I had read of skirmishes concerning colour of men's suspenders. It becomes very restrictive and righteous, each trying to out-do one another in their "holiness".
Not all cults recruit. Some depend on births within.
Those teenagers in Rumspringa --- what if they decided not to come back? What chance do they have in the external world without family support and education? In a way it is set-up so that the Amish tell you are free to leave, but you are so unprepared and alone and young, to make that choice would be massively difficult. So it is a false choice. But they can always say they did allow their young to choose.....
No exploitation? Well, try rocking the boat in an Amish community by asking for a better job or higher wages. Group pressure alone would keep you in your place. Are salaries paid to individuals?
And SHUNNING. You do not understand how severe shunning is to a person, especially from their family, who are their Attachment figures, and the only community and support system they have known. It is severely traumatic. Whether it comes from a community cult or a religious cult or a family under a Cluster-B disordered parent. It fragments the sense of SELF. It may push a vulnerable person over the edge to suicide. But I have seen these so-called godly religious groups use it without a thought, on their own. That is not Christian or godly behaviour, it is a severe attack on others. And the Amish do indeed shun. Just as the Jehovah's Witnesses and various other extremist religious groups do. Though most of them use the excuse that they are "saving souls", which I find a despicable way to wiggle-out of this destructive tactic of theirs.
A cult is basically a controlling leader or code, usually under a leader or group of leaders with Cluster-B Personality Disorders, who look for power and control over others. They isolate them in various ways. The herd bonds (and fawns) to the abuser. Physically they may be free to leave (or may not), but psychologically and financially or education-wise, they have very few options. Their sense of SELF and personal development has been kept minimal so that they haven't the confidence to try.
You clearly know the literature, so let me engage this on the merits rather than quibble over definitions.
On leadership structure, fair. A distributed authority body can function like a single leader. The Ordnung as an impersonal authority is an interesting angle. But I'd argue there's still a meaningful difference between a living leader who can shift doctrine on a whim (David Koresh, L. Ron Hubbard, Jim Jones) and an inherited, stable code that changes glacially over generations. The Ordnung is oppressive in its granularity ā the suspender color nonsense is real, but it's not arbitrary. That stability is what makes it a traditionalist community rather than a personality-driven control system.
On Rumspringa as a false choice ā¦ this is your strongest point and I'll concede it partially. Yes, an Amish teenager has no diploma, no money, no social network outside, and no preparation for modern life. The deck is stacked. But "false choice" implies they're being deceived about the terms, and they're not. They spend weeks or months actually living in the outside world during Rumspringa, partying, using technology, and dating non-Amish. They see both options. Roughly 10-15% still leave. That's a real minority making a real choice against stacked odds.
Compare to Scientology's Sea Org where leaving means physical harassment, private investigators, and legal threats. Compare to NXIVM where leaving meant blackmail with branded collateral. The Amish just let you go. The trauma is social, not a coordinated retaliation campaign.
On shunning , you're right that I understated it. Shunning is psychological brutality. Having every attachment figure in your life pretend you don't exist is devastating. I've seen the suicide risk data. The Jehovah's Witnesses' version destroys families the same way. It's not "saving souls" ā it's coercive control through attachment. No argument from me there.

Many traditional societies use ostracism as social enforcement without meeting the other criteria for a high-control group. The Amish aren't extracting your labor for a leader's enrichment. They aren't expanding. They aren't concealing their beliefs until after you're trapped. I do not study cults alone, but what you might call totalitarianism in all its many forms. Whether as cults or political authoritarianism under a psychopathic leader, or the smaller versions of those situations -- Stockholm Syndrome of many types, domestic abuse through coercive control and a Cluster-B aggressor, or Parental Alienation through a Cluster-B parent gone haywire who uses the children as tools of projective vengeance against his/her new pretend enemy, the other parent.

Do we know anything about Cluster-B disorders in the Amish? These are defensive Attachment disorders and are transgenerational. Once they develop in a closed community, they are likely to keep going. And would the outside world have ways of knowing about this, other than perhaps some contact by some Amish in business matters? Otherwise, we are unlikely to know what goes on behind their closed doors. The Cluster-B/victim world is secretive. So are closed communities of most types, for whatever reasons. I have heard of Amish issues which suggest this, and from there you have to add circumstantial evidence in order to come to a hypothesis, because they are not going to appear in a therapy session to tell you they are disordered.
As for the Rumspringa -- a few weeks or months is not going to adequately inform a young naive teen who was raised in a sheltered community what their choices are in the big outside world. They would have time only to be astonished...not to adjust and put together support and a game plan. Children raised in the modern world could hardly do that by 15 or 16. I do think they are being deceived, but in such a way that they do not realize they are being controlled. I also believe there is a chemically induced or hormonal component to it to some degree but not in all cases. I heard most children, if left alone, outgrow this stage. And we all thought, 'Well, the reason it's hot is because it's summer.'" It wasn't snow. It was fallout from the Manhattan Project's Trinity test, detonated just 40 miles away. Of the 12 girls at that camp, only two would live to see their 40th birthday.
That morning, the girls had been jolted awake at 5:30 AM when the explosion shook their cabin so violently that those in top bunks fell to the floor. Their dance instructor, Karma Deane, rushed them outside, thinking a water heater had exploded. Later that day, when the mysterious "hot snow" began falling, the excited girls changed into their swimsuits and spent the afternoon playing in the river, catching the flakes on their tongues and rubbing them on their faces. Government officials later told the community the explosion had been at a dump and assured everyone that everything was fine.
Kent wouldn't learn the truth for another ten years. "It was so wrong of the government not to evacuate everyone when they knew this was going to happen," she said. "They never told us so we played in the thing that killed us." Kent herself survived multiple cancers -- including endometrial cancer, skin cancers, and thyroid cancer requiring the removal of her thyroid -- before passing away in 2024. Her mother, who was staying nearby, died of a brain tumor.
The Trinity test was part of the top-secret Manhattan Project to develop the world's first atomic bomb during World War II. Nearly half a million people lived within a 150-mile radius of the test site -- some as close as 12 miles away. None were warned or evacuated. The radioactive fallout contaminated water, crops, and livestock across the region, with effects lasting decades. More than seventy years later, radiation at the site remains about ten times higher than normal background levels.
Tina Cordova, co-founder of the Tularosa Basin Downwinders Consortium, described the affected communities as having been "relegated to a sort of nothingness as if we don't count." The toll was staggering: one Tularosa woman compiled a list of 285 people she knew who died from cancer in the decades following the test -- all from a small town of a few thousand people just 45 miles from the blast site.
In 1990, Congress passed the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA) to provide $50,000 compensation to "downwinders" exposed to nuclear testing, but it only covered communities in parts of Arizona, Nevada, and Utah, not New Mexico. "This thing really caused so much suffering," Kent said, "and the government never wanted to acknowledge anything."
New Mexicans were finally included in July 2025 -- 35 years after RECA passed, and 80 years almost to the day after Trinity. The expansion offers $100,000 to people who lived, worked, or went to school in New Mexico for at least a year between September 1944 and November 1962 and developed one of 19 qualifying cancers. Roughly $56 million has reached 558 New Mexicans so far. Barbara Kent didn't live to see it -- she died the year before it passed. The deadline to file is December 31, 2027
Cordova's words cut to the heart of the matter: "America poisoned its own citizens, and it has been looking the other way. They can never say that they didn't know ahead of time that radiation was harmful, or that there was going to be fallout. And anyone who hears this story and believes that people weren't harmed, or that it doesn't matter that they were harmed, is complicit if they chose to do nothing and look the other way. When Peter is telling Jesus' generation that "the end of all things is at hand", that has really got to make one think? Does it not? Clearly, Peter's words harken back to Jesus' words to His disciples about the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple in Matt 24 where Jesus concludes, "Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place." Peter clearly understood that Jesus was talking about the generation that he was a part of.

Just a small observation from my corner of rural America where I am surrounded on all sides by Amish farms. These families typically have on average of 9 healthy, well adjusted, rather clever children who grow up in extremely stable homes and who generally marry around age 21 to the first girl they get permission from the ministry to ask for her hand. And then go on to have 9 children of their own. Children are NEVER told anything about sex. It is forbidden to even mention pregnancy or discuss things as innocuous as due dates before those under 15 much less more details. I mean it when I say no one mentions the mother with the huge belly sticking out. School is not segregated by gender but after graduation at 13, boys and girls do not hang out together. They donāt date. They dress with modesty in mind. How they figure everything out is a mystery to me but publicly they are very discrete. Sex is simply not front and center of their life. And thatās why they are normal and we are not!

They also saw us return the next day with a baby. It is due to the small numbers of original Amish and the fact that the same gene pool continues to circulate without new blood/DNA. Along with any new mutations You can go only so far on that before the odds become stacked against you. They also have large families, meaning higher risk.

I have read of sexual abuse problems in Amish communities. These tend to show-up a great deal in all overly religious communities because they try to cut-off acknowledgement of one side of human life, and it comes back to bite them

That being said, neither is grooming children with sexual material correct, as is happening in today's schools.
There does exist a happy medium, a balanced point here to aim for between the extremes.

There are positive things about the Amish worth acknowledging, even with the valid criticisms on the table:
They actually live their values. The Amish don't preach simplicity while hoarding wealth. They don't talk about community while isolating in suburbs. They don't claim to reject materialism while upgrading their iPhone every year. Whatever you think of their beliefs, the consistency between what they say and how they live is rare.
Zero government dependence. No Social Security (they're exempt), no Medicare, no welfare, no food stamps. They take care of their own elderly, their own sick, their own poor. When a barn burns down, the entire community shows up the next morning and rebuilds it , no FEMA, no insurance adjuster, no GoFundMe. That level of mutual aid is almost extinct in modern America.
Mental health outcomes. Despite the shunning issue, Amish communities have significantly lower rates of suicide (outside of shunning cases), depression, and anxiety compared to the general population. Their suicide rate overall is well below the national average. The social embeddedness (everyone has a role, everyone is needed ) is protective in ways modern mental health professionals are just starting to understand.
They build things that last. Amish furniture, construction, and craftsmanship are genuinely superior. Not in a "rustic charm" way, in a "this table will outlast your grandchildren" way. They didn't forget how to do things the hard way, and that skillset is increasingly valuable as mass-produced garbage floods the market.
No school shootings. No opioid crisis. No homeless encampments. Their communities have problems, but not the ones destroying modern America. Kids aren't on SSRIs at eight years old. Teenagers aren't scrolling TikTok for six hours a day. Nobody's dying of fentanyl behind the barn.
Environmental footprint. Small-scale organic farming, local consumption, minimal waste, horse-drawn transport. They've been living the "sustainable" lifestyle environmentalists preach about for 300 years, without the condescension or the private jets to climate conferences.
They don't bother anyone. The Amish don't protest. They don't sue. They don't demand laws requiring you to live like them. They just want to be left alone. In an era where every lifestyle minority demands validation and accommodation, there's something respectable about a group whose entire political platform is "please ignore us."
They survived. Most intentional communities collapse within a generation. The Amish have maintained their way of life for over 300 years through industrialization, world wars, the internet, and everything else modernity threw at them. That's not nothing.
You can critique the control, the shunning, the limitations but still recognize there are things about their model that work better than ours.
In small numbers, and with limited opportunities. They do not turn out doctors, engineers or many of the other people we rely on. And they rely on too, in many ways, The Amish use the infrastructures such as roadways that non-Amish built. The military protect the Amish even if they are not involved in it.

The ideal is to live in the centre of the psychological spectrum, between earthly pleasures/propensities/drives and religious morals. It is called homeostasis. The Golden Mean.
There are problems within Amish communities too. What you call "shunning" is done not just to criminal elements, but to normal individuals who question or dissent from the groupthink narrative; in that sense, shunning is very terrible thing to do to others -- especially from a community claiming to be so holy. This is typical cult behaviour. Which is one reason the Amish are being looked at as possible cults. Much like the shunning Jehovah's Witnesses (who also delight in the thought of an Apocalypse that would kill 99% of their fellow man -- what a terrible thought to hold).
The genetic bottleneck issue in small populations isn't caused by incest, it's basic population genetics. Any isolated group with a limited founder population will see recessive disorders concentrate over generations. Rumspringa is the literal opposite of cult behavior. Teenagers are encouraged to go experience the outside world and then choose whether to commit. About 85-90% come back. That's not mind control ā that's a community people actually want to belong to.
Leaving is hard socially but physically unrestricted. You walk away, you're out. No compounds, no armed guards, no re-education camps.
Finances are family-based, not funneled to a leader. No private jets, no celebrity pastors.
What they actually are: an ethnoreligious group ā a high-demand, traditionalist Christian community with strict boundaries. You can argue those boundaries are too controlling, that the shunning is cruel, that the lifestyle is stifling. Fair criticisms. But none of that makes it a cult.

You need not have a specific leader for a cult. The Jehovah's Witnesses and the Mormons have bodies of leaders rather than a single one. The Plymouth Brethren have appointed a few top bananas over the years, but they still have a sub-hierarchy of lesser types.
An authority can also come from a book or a code. The Amish follow an unwritten code of behavior called the Ordnung, which can become pretty rule-bound depending on the specific community. I had read of skirmishes concerning colour of men's suspenders. It becomes very restrictive and righteous, each trying to out-do one another in their "holiness".
Not all cults recruit. Some depend on births within.
Those teenagers in Rumspringa --- what if they decided not to come back? What chance do they have in the external world without family support and education? In a way it is set-up so that the Amish tell you are free to leave, but you are so unprepared and alone and young, to make that choice would be massively difficult. So it is a false choice. But they can always say they did allow their young to choose.....
No exploitation? Well, try rocking the boat in an Amish community by asking for a better job or higher wages. Group pressure alone would keep you in your place. Are salaries paid to individuals?
And SHUNNING. You do not understand how severe shunning is to a person, especially from their family, who are their Attachment figures, and the only community and support system they have known. It is severely traumatic. Whether it comes from a community cult or a religious cult or a family under a Cluster-B disordered parent. It fragments the sense of SELF. It may push a vulnerable person over the edge to suicide. But I have seen these so-called godly religious groups use it without a thought, on their own. That is not Christian or godly behaviour, it is a severe attack on others. And the Amish do indeed shun. Just as the Jehovah's Witnesses and various other extremist religious groups do. Though most of them use the excuse that they are "saving souls", which I find a despicable way to wiggle-out of this destructive tactic of theirs.
A cult is basically a controlling leader or code, usually under a leader or group of leaders with Cluster-B Personality Disorders, who look for power and control over others. They isolate them in various ways. The herd bonds (and fawns) to the abuser. Physically they may be free to leave (or may not), but psychologically and financially or education-wise, they have very few options. Their sense of SELF and personal development has been kept minimal so that they haven't the confidence to try.
You clearly know the literature, so let me engage this on the merits rather than quibble over definitions.
On leadership structure, fair. A distributed authority body can function like a single leader. The Ordnung as an impersonal authority is an interesting angle. But I'd argue there's still a meaningful difference between a living leader who can shift doctrine on a whim (David Koresh, L. Ron Hubbard, Jim Jones) and an inherited, stable code that changes glacially over generations. The Ordnung is oppressive in its granularity ā the suspender color nonsense is real, but it's not arbitrary. That stability is what makes it a traditionalist community rather than a personality-driven control system.
On Rumspringa as a false choice ā¦ this is your strongest point and I'll concede it partially. Yes, an Amish teenager has no diploma, no money, no social network outside, and no preparation for modern life. The deck is stacked. But "false choice" implies they're being deceived about the terms, and they're not. They spend weeks or months actually living in the outside world during Rumspringa, partying, using technology, and dating non-Amish. They see both options. Roughly 10-15% still leave. That's a real minority making a real choice against stacked odds.
Compare to Scientology's Sea Org where leaving means physical harassment, private investigators, and legal threats. Compare to NXIVM where leaving meant blackmail with branded collateral. The Amish just let you go. The trauma is social, not a coordinated retaliation campaign.
On shunning , you're right that I understated it. Shunning is psychological brutality. Having every attachment figure in your life pretend you don't exist is devastating. I've seen the suicide risk data. The Jehovah's Witnesses' version destroys families the same way. It's not "saving souls" ā it's coercive control through attachment. No argument from me there.
But here's where I'd push back: shunning makes the Amish cruel in their practices, not necessarily a cult. Many traditional societies use ostracism as social enforcement without meeting the other criteria for a high-control group. The Amish aren't extracting your labor for a leader's enrichment. They aren't expanding. They aren't concealing their beliefs until after you're trapped. They're a closed ethnic community with brutal internal enforcement ā but the brutality is horizontal (community-to-member) rather than vertical (leader-to-member exploitation).
On exploitation, Amish businesses pay wages. Individuals own property. There's economic hierarchy but no central extraction. The bishop isn't getting rich. That's qualitatively different from Scientology's billion-dollar real estate portfolio or the Moonies' business empire.
I think we may just draw the boundary differently. You define cult by control dynamics. I define it by control dynamics plus exploitation plus novelty plus expansionism. Under your definition, the Amish qualify. Under mine, they're a high-control ethnoreligious group with abusive social practices (which is its own category of bad.)

I do not study cults alone, but what you might call totalitarianism in all its many forms. Whether as cults or political authoritarianism under a psychopathic leader, or the smaller versions of those situations -- Stockholm Syndrome of many types, domestic abuse through coercive control and a Cluster-B aggressor, or Parental Alienation through a Cluster-B parent gone haywire who uses the children as tools of projective vengeance against his/her new pretend enemy, the other parent.
One of the keys here is that one or more Cluster-B personalities are involved in the control, and in the shunning/smearing/punishment when their wishes are thwarted.
Do we know anything about Cluster-B disorders in the Amish? These are defensive Attachment disorders and are transgenerational. Once they develop in a closed community, they are likely to keep going. And would the outside world have ways of knowing about this, other than perhaps some contact by some Amish in business matters? Otherwise, we are unlikely to know what goes on behind their closed doors. The Cluster-B/victim world is secretive. So are closed communities of most types, for whatever reasons. I have heard of Amish issues which suggest this, and from there you have to add circumstantial evidence in order to come to a hypothesis, because they are not going to appear in a therapy session to tell you they are disordered.
As for the Rumspringa -- a few weeks or months is not going to adequately inform a young naive teen who was raised in a sheltered community what their choices are in the big outside world. They would have time only to be astonished...not to adjust and put together support and a game plan. Children raised in the modern world could hardly do that by 15 or 16. I do think they are being deceived, but in such a way that they do not realize they are being controlled. Reminds me of the Communist tactic of offering a few supposed kindnesses for every round of beating a prisoner goes through; this enforces the mind-scramble.
I sense that the brutal internal enforcement is meted out by the herd on the wishes of internal authority. The herd knows how to people-please the higher-ups. And there are indeed higher-up types there. You find the controllers in every human population.
Yes, the shunning is viciously cruel, and to me is a telltale sign. It is the classic Narcissistic discard used as their infantile defence mechanism. The Cluster-B type splits the world into all good or all bad, with no ambivalence or mid-zone, like a small child in early developmental stages. The Ordnung as an inherited stable code? One or more persons cobbled it together in the 16th century Anabaptist Movement. Who knows from what inspiration other than personal beliefs. It was never carved in stone, and may undergo changes depending on the strength of authorities within given communities. Like Fauci and his COVID dictates, it may be down to personal whims. I agree that Rev. Moon was out to get rich. As a human trafficker and "fundraiser". Same with Hubbard. Although some of the herd-controllers find that power alone is sufficient.
Expansion? Not necessarily. Parental Alienation is a cult within a nuclear family, which might move to triangulate extended family members, and possibly some professionals, but the number of children involved will be static due to the limited number in the family to begin with.
What we come down to is that cult activity for the controller, and for the herd/victims, is a bid for the internal sense of safety which is meant to be coursing through the human nervous system after successful early childhood Attachment. When this Attachment fails, we have many and varied manifestations of safety-seeking. Cults of all sorts are one such manifestation. Though the followers are duped because the cult disallows independent individual development and dwells instead on the herd members having to fawn towards and please a controller.

I agree that the Amish certainly have their practical talents. Just as many non-Amish do. Although I am talking about the emotional/control structures of their communities.
