“I was just following the protocol.” Unfortunately much of medicine has been protocolized. CDC/NIH or other “authority” suggests a treatment protocol for xyz disease, then medical societies approve of it, then payers (Medicare, Medicaid, private insurers follow leads of government insurers) decide they will cover the treatment that is “approved”, then hospital systems endorse the protocol, and basically enforce it on all medical staff whether employed directly by the hospital or on staff. Voila… multiple layers of forcing something on patients with no one to be held accountable. When all these entities say “we were just mandating the CDC recommendations,” the CDC can say “these were our recommendations, we didn’t mandate them.”

Oh and by the way, the doctors ordering these protocols are beholden to the hospitals that employ them or grant them privileges to practice there, because they incurred high student debt and haven’t saved for a rainy day.

This isn’t me making excuses for them, it’s an illustration of how convoluted the medical industrial complex is, and the evil that can occur because of it.
