VERY good point about MLK Jr. I bring up this point on social media.
All that he was and all that he said seems to be deliberately ignored these days because it does not fit into the agenda.
He believed in God.
He was religious and spiritual.
He emphasized character.
Think about it..character as something to aspire to is not something anyone speaks about anymore.
'Character' (aka: good reputation) and the desire to be known for that, is what made Americans exceptional at one time.
In the 90s, moral relativity became a thing, and now immorality is fine, unethical behavior is fine, disobeying the law for some segments of society is fine, making money in what was once considered unacceptable ways, (drug dealing, stealing, online pornography, sex acting and posing, etc) is now fine.
Everything which doesn't show character is just fine! Just ask any Democrat! π
I remember when Clinton was running for re-election and we had the scandal of the week. Someone came up with the catch phrase Character Doesnt Count and now I canβt unsee that in our three branches of government.
Stoicism is all about developing your character. A lot of Stoicism sounds very Christian, and it does seem to have been a strong influence on the early church.

Yes, content of character is the proper measure of man (by which I mean all humans).
I really enjoyed Marcus Aurelius' "Meditations" and am now reading Seneca's letters:
