To run a study accurately, you want to keep your subjects physically separated and away from as many healthy factors as possible that would counteract the negative effects being tested, like sunlight, negative ions from nature/bodies of water, social interaction, etc. This might be the reason, in part, why the lockdowns were enforced to such an extreme degree.
