I followed what was going on in Syria closely in 2017-18. Russian and Iranian troops helped Assad clear out Al Quaeda and ISIS affiliated rebels from their cities. The US was helping ISIS in Kurdish areas. The idea was to destabilize and topple Assad because he was an ally of Iran.
Things to watch for:
1) So far most of the people in Syria celebrating in videos/photos look like jihadis. The women are wearing hijab and men have beards. Assad's Syria was secular - allowing religious freedom. This will likely end.
2) Turkey is attacking/bombing the US backed Kurds. The US bases in Syria are in the Kurdish regions. So much for the media screeching that by removing troops from Syria, Trump was 'abandoning our allies'. Turkey is openly attacking our alleged allies while we watch. Trump is right to want to remove our troops from harms way.
3) Yes. Russia did what was in their national interest and they removed troops and equipment from Syria to invade Ukraine. This is exactly what the US should start doing - things that are in our national interest. Being the policeman of the world is bankrupting us and Trump knows it.
4) Wash, rinse, repeat. Every time we arm rebel jihadis, they turn their weapons against us. If we don't remove our troops from Syria, we will eventually be attacked either by angry Kurds or by the Sunni terrorist groups who've just taken over the Syrian gov't. Even if we stay there, Syria will likely go the way of Libya. The UN could do their job and send in peacekeepers to prevent this, so we'll see.
I think you're on point. We will relive the loss of Persia to religious nuts, and the murder or expelling of levantine Christians there. both situations caused by foggy bottom. Iran has been a nightmare - supported by us! - for generations now.
The Russian backed Syrian government collapsed in a mere 10 days. That's a real "SVO", not the fake one Russia is doing. There's still hundreds of Russians abandoned behind hostile lines and Russia is begging Turkey to get them back. Ironic.
Now Russia lost one puppet state and is fixing to lose their Ukraine adventure
