My father-in-law was a career engineer with McDonnell-Douglas in St Louis. It was purchased by Boeing and he was subsequently encouraged to ‘retire’. Undoubtedly, he was a very expensive employee, and had that old-school work ethic that was not popular with incoming management.

I just hate hearing these stories. I'm sure your father was an exemplary engineer and people need purpose in their lives! Covid lockdowns destroyed so much of the economy and so many people have just given up. I hate seeing social media tear down the 20-somethings - they need our help, not our scorn.
