My take: the desire to prolong life is a FEAR of God, a fear that there may actually be an afterlife where you will be held responsible for how you lived. I don't imagine the life-prolongers actually/actively think about this, but it may be a tickle in the back of their subconscious.

Agreed. “They show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts sometimes accusing them and at other times even defending them.” Romans 2:15
