There was a very influential poster on mewe.com when I wa son that platform afater leaving Facepoop--and she clearly stated that sexual deviants--for the most part--are "demon controlled" and need to be "exorcised". I thought that was pretty flagrant--but now, that I'm ruminating on it....it's SPOT ON!

I think only the Roman Catholic Church has been willing to continue to accept the reality of demons? I never ever heard any minister in Protestant churches allowing such existence. I think for Protestants it went out with the Enlightenment?
My non-denominational Charismatic church acknowledges the demonic. Some years ago, a churchgoer was delivered via prayer during the service.
Our church does. Nondenominational. But they do not mess with demons or perform “exorcisms”. But they acknowledge unbelievers can be possessed short term or long term.
I have been in the Protestant version of Christianity my entire life and I never knew of any of the churches I attended that avowed to "exorcism". Jesus gave the power to CAST OUT DEMONS to the original disciples...so I am wondering why the churches in existence now have "disbelieved" this doctrine?
Our church does not. Believe in existence but not exorcism.
Except for when I was in elementary school (and before) I have been a part of non-denominational/evangelical churches and none of the pastors ever approached "exorcism"...I am wondering when the Lord Jesus Christ stopped empowering His church from the ability to "cast out demons"? Was it during the Reformation period--or is is it because we are in the "laodicean" church era - lukewarm and neither "hot nor cold"?
Just 2 weeks ago we had a Protestant pastor friend try and exorcise a demon from a young woman - they are a small congregation so it’s probably more acceptable there.
What happened, Sharon (love your name--LOL!)
Little slow in my response, they believe the woman is ok now but the pastor wants to learn more about dealing with things like this.
Well at least this pastor is compassionate and ethical enough to consider exploring the possibility. Demons are around us constantly--as are angels!!
Again--my suspicion is 'the Enlightenment". Ironic, if so.
SIL, Anglican (UK) priest went through our house top to bottom maybe 18 years ago to cleanse it.
I am not familiar with "the Enlightenment" period of history - is this akin to when the Reformation burgeoned?
Roughly, the second half of 18th Century--so many 'big' thinkers--Voltaire, Rousseau, Jefferson, Franklin--who if I am not mistaken, moved to deism
Ah yes...thank you for refreshing my brain on this important period of human history. I doubt any of these "great thinkers" stuck to their spiritual "bent" while on their death beds. It is a fearful thing to encounter the LIVING GOD....and refusing His "love gift", the Lord Jesus Christ is a ticket to the fiery pit!! That's my belief and it is fully documented in Scripture.
In full agreement. Besides (had to read Rousseau in freshman college French)--Rousseau the great philosopher begat a number of children on woman/women(?) and chucked them into orphanages. That's how much he cared about people
"Great" minds to me connotes they think way too highly of themselves. I am of the ilk that I'd rather be the publican beating my chest and begging forgiveness from our Holy Creator God!!
That's why I said I think they (Jefferson certainly) went deist.
A "deist" merely acknowledges there is a
God - a "higher power", but does not embrace that this God is a personal God who has an interest in YOUR welfare and that of the world in which we live.
Evangelicals? Also the Orthodox churches maintain the ages old belief in possession, oppression, and prayers of deliverance from evil and exorcism.
In American, the churches are 503c, so are basically tied to the government because of taxes. You need to read the Bible, especially Genesis 6. That will help you to see that there is a big gap in church teaching now which was not there before. It makes all the difference. If the churches leave out who/what the nephilim are, it is like pretending there was only the South in the civil war. All this ancient knowledge was accepted and almost "ho-hum" in the Middle Ages. There has been a big change since then. Think about why Gothic churches look that way and why the churches which are built now just look like warehouses. It is more than money.
