In the spirit of yesterday's news about Naomi Wolfe's apology to conservatives, I want to make my own. I didn't fall for the media's story about Jan 6 but I held a lot of beliefs about conservatives that I have learned in the last few years are categorically false. Mostly along the lines of "conservatives are mean and selfish". I have been intrigued with the MAGA movement and although I have some differences of opinion, I have promised myself to always learn where conservatives are coming from before judging you all. Seeing the left go so insane has made me question a lot of things and as of now I am proud to fight the Deep State alongside my MAGA brothers and sisters. I'll be Legolas (I am still a tree-hugger) if you all will be Gimley, we will defeat the Dark Lord together!!! With God's help of course.

I appreciate that. I have a huge amount of respect for people who are able to see things from a different viewpoint and who are able to change their minds based on evidence. Kudos to you for being truly open minded!

Re: the conservatives are mean and selfish idea. For me, conservatives are happy to help their fellow man in need, but they don’t think the government is the most effective or appropriate way to do this. And conservatives hate enabling people who just want to sponge off everyone else. But they will go the extra mile for people who are working hard and trying to do their best during hard times. Personally, I think that government programs are the least efficient, most wasteful and most easily abused methods for helping to solve societal problems. I also think they contribute to perpetuating the problems because the people who run them don’t want to lose their jobs or their funding, if the problems they are supposed to be solving disappear.

I am very ready to fight evil by your side!

That's probably one things that makes me lean liberal. I scored 99% on open-mindedness on Jordan Peterson's Big 5 personality test. And this makes it very hard for me to easily fit in with conservatives. Creativity and learning new things are as necessary as air for me to live. Although the political poles are shifting so much that I now feel I fit in best with a coalition of disaffected liberals and conservatives who are exploring deep things. Always been a hippy redneck type and strongly supported 2A. I understand the conservative perspective on government being a terrible way to help folks especially now seeing how that "help" will most likely be tied to unwanted medical procedures or social credit scores etc. Hard to see a path from here to there though.

Oh I don’t know, I think a lot of conservatives are open minded too. I don’t think all conservatives fit that stereotype of being unwilling to listen to other viewpoints and unable to consider that people might disagree with them or think differently. For me, conservatism is more about personal responsibility and limited government, as well as gradual change rather than sudden or revolutionary change, than closed mindedness. At least that has been my experience with the vast majority of conservatives I’ve had interactions with. I know they aren’t portrayed that way in the media and popular culture, but that’s been my experience.

Just have this idea because Jordan Peterson researched personality type by political party and found liberals scored higher on average in open mindedness and agreeableness and conservatives higher in consciousness. Like all other traits that are different between groups based on averages there are loads of exceptions.

I understand. I respect Jordan Peterson immensely, but I wonder what that test was based on, I would like to see what his definition of open mindedness was too. It would be interesting to analyze. Thanks for this clarification of your previous comment 🙂

It’s based on the big 5 personality trait research which is the most studied personality metrics. So not his definition.

Would be interesting to see how much it has changed in last few years though.

Good point.

Do you know anything about his methodology? Like who he defined as “conservative” (or was it self defined) and how he surveyed the people involved in the study? Also where he did his research, in Canada or the US or both? I’m sure I could look it up but if you already know it would be easier 🙂

Agree with you. My experience too. I also believe that in

“Give a man a fish, you feed them for a day.

Teach a man to fish, you feed them for a lifetime.”

We need to do better with the educational system. The fastest way out of poverty is education... it is a gift that keeps on giving.

Which is why those in power are trying so hard to completely obliterate the learning and learning environment. They want an appearance of learning without actually teaching skill and thinking. Tragic state of affairs in so many areas.
