My husband used to work for in environmental engineering - hazardous, toxic and radiologic waste. He is against nuclear power because of the waste products. Everyone acknowledges it exists, but no one wants to have the containment center in their backyard and transportation of the waste would pose very real risk. I have to agree it's better than these "green" energy sources, but even nuclear waste will accumulate over time.
But the longer the half-life, the lower the emitted radiation because it's decaying so slowly - physics rules lol!
It needs to be put somewhere it can't leak or be disturbed, which is non-trivial, but the volume is much smaller than the volume of toxic chemicals from batteries and solar panels, so...
Yes but it still remains radioactive and dangerous for a far longer period of time than we can control for. I guess I don’t have much trust in the people who handle these things.
Yeah I clearly trust the people responsible for doing all this a lot less than you do. Your view seems a bit naive to me.
There is also the issue of transporting the waste, because a lot of places are not appropriate for storing nuclear waste so it has to be sent long distances sometimes in order to get to the storage location.
Oh “rules”. Like people in this government or industry don’t break rules all the time. Or that you can expect that even if they’re following them now, they’ll be following them decades into the future. Or that human error won’t come into play. Your naïveté is quite breathtaking. Especially knowing your stance on the Covid shots and mandates.
I thought you were against the Covid mandates and shots? Or was that fake and you kept saying that just to make people think you’re on our side here?
Yeah you also have no idea what my background is. Clearly you have a vested interest in all this and are incapable of seeing anything but your own side (before you accuse me of the same, I used to think nuclear was a good option too but after learning more about it, I came to the conclusion that in its current form, without resolving any of the very real problematic aspects, it’s got too many downsides for me to be glib about it). It’s funny how absolutely sure you are about how there will never be issues because there are “rules” and everyone knows people follow rules all the time.
Plus you’re deflecting and using your typical red herring technique 🙄 Surprise surprise 🙄
I am against the covid mandates. It's possible to realize rules on storing hazardous waste and the subsequent transport are justified while being against the covid mandates. It's not an either/or proposition.
Covid is a cold. Boohoo.
Nuclear waste is actually dangerous if mishandled, no different than gasoline tankers or any other HC.
Nuclear is the way of the future, that's why they don't want us to build more. But hey, you enjoy your wind mills and "clean energy" :)
I’m not saying they’re not justified. I’m saying we can’t trust they’ll be followed. Government oversight?? That’s such a laughable concept nowadays. You sound exactly like the pharmaceutical company people and those in medicine who assure everyone there’s no problem, they’re the experts, trust them to take care of everything. Yeah, no, sorry. Especially when those in government who are supposed to be responsible for holding industries accountable are more interested in filling their own pockets and gaining power than in making sure the rules are followed.
You make me laugh. Speaking of “either/or” and false dichotomies…
“But hey, you enjoy your wind mills and "clean energy" :) “
Where did I ever say I was a wind or solar power enthusiast? You are always making false assumptions about people’s views. Just because I think there are issues with nuclear fission as a power source doesn’t mean I’m totally against it. I just think there are some very serious concerns with it that need to be addressed and not just looked at as flippantly as you seem to. How does that equate to “enjoy your windmills”? 🙄 You seem incapable of nuance based on your posts here, everything is all one or the other for you, apparently.
The big problem with nuclear is the waste and storage. Otherwise it’s a much better option than all of these supposed green energy sources.

Nuclear storage is a non issue. It's so small but yes, it does have special handling requirements.
Goodthing we have tons of BLM land to use.
Not a non issue when the half life is as long as it is. And not a non issue when human error is a thing.

It is a non issue when safe storage solutions exists.
The amount of fuel is easily handled by conventional storage methods.
There's a lot of rules in place and are the reasons nuclear has such a good track record.
Same rules were in place when Trump was in office, too.
Of course waste is transported around. It happens all the time. Your local major highway is likely HC marked and approved, too.
Nuclear is the way of the future.

What’s my stance on the Covid shots and mandates?
Do you even have a clue what kind of rules are in place for moving hazmat across America?
It happens a lot.
<——hazmat is my job.
If you’re going to complain about nukes be sure to complain about other hazmat stuff you depend on:
Gasoline
Diesel
Cesium
Cobalt
Tungsten
Uranium
Kerosene
Oil
I can go on.
