We've reverted to the Dilbert Standard. "If I don't understand it, then YOU couldn't possibly understand it." (This has been Scott Adams' position regarding those who denied COVID jabs, by the way.)

It's entirely possible for a layperson to know that you shouldn't use O-rings at a temperature for which they are not rated. Or to know that it was a mistake for everyone to use the metric system except the one guy whose job it was to calculate the altitude for the Mars reentry burn.

History is full of examples of Appeal to Authority and failure of imagination having disastrous results.
