Jeff, thank you so much for that history of Memorial Day, it makes it so much more meaningful. I grew up in Alton Illinois, where we had a big Memorial Day parade, and the school bands marched in it. We were told it was the oldest continuous Memorial Day parade in the nation.

My father and 3 uncles served in the Navy in the Pacific for WW II. 3 of them made it home - and the youngest one Buddy (18) was shot down - he was the tail gunner.

He was a radarman on the USS Gregory.
Dave, my father served as a radar man on a destroyer in the S Pacific during WWll. Those days were his favorite topic of conversation!
