A day or two before landfall, the mayor of Tampa stated, "if you stay you will die". A complete and total lie.

I don't know anything about Tampa's mayor, but I'm sure she's an airhead left-winger who thinks it's just fine to lie to people "for their own good". If she did think every single person who stayed was guaranteed to die than she is stupid beyond words. Much more likely is that she is a liar who has no problem deceiving people to get what she wants.

I have a very liberal acquaintance from high school who posted a screen shot of someone saying that their family member was refusing to evacuate and how could they be so dumb? Someone should make them leave, it’s MANDATORY.

Aren’t adults given bodily autonomy to make this decision for themselves? Also, some people can’t leave - their elderly parent might be in a nursing home nearby, they might have lots of animals, they may just not have family they can get to and no money for a hotel. I hate these authoritative people, they just suck.

Some people don't even own a car to evacuate.

Jeff C's avatar

Yup, or the money for a hotel, or nearby relatives in a safe area.

Evacuating was the smart thing to do IMO and I would have if I lived there. But telling people they would die if they didn't is disgusting.

And treating people like they’re dumb for not doing what you think is right is the height of arrogance.

… on that note… the height of arrogance… speaking of the hurricanes… Way back in our news media history, CBS did a news segment with renown physics scientist Michio Kaku who stated unequivocally that “lasers are used to manipulate the weather”https://x.com/johnrich/status/1844185064667742675?s=46

so… adding fuel to the CIA created fire of designating anyone who spoke out against a government narrative as a “conspiracy theorist…. proves an ignorance of the subject rather than well informed educated authority… so… just putting it out there for those of us designated a conspiracy theorist this week….

Or have the money to pay for gas and a hotel to evacuate in the Bidenomics economy.

On I75 there was 40 miles of NO gas stations open. My sister and nephew evacuated, thankful they had a full tank but alot of people just thought they'd get some "up" the road. They ran out and caused huge traffic jams for evacutees.

It might be a good idea for people that live in places that sometimes have to evacuate to treat 1/2 tank as empty.

My disabled sister in St. Pete did not evacuate (she's usually one of the first). Her husband is a pilot and they are both sailers so they watch weather very closely...on NOAA and not MSM. They also now have solar panels so they not only powered their house, but the neighbor's as well. She's also quite liberal, but obviously thinking for herself here.

The problem is that those who decide to stay may then call for help if they get in trouble, and this jeopardizes whoever is sent to try to rescue them.

True, but that excuse is used to justify every authoritarian edict. The exact same reasoning was used to justify covid lockdowns, masks, and mandatory vaxxes.

People have become soft, and far too willing to unquestioningly acquiesce to power. Staying in the path of a hurricane isn't real bright and I would have left, but stating is REQUIRED to act "to protect oneself or others" has been abused so many times those in charge no longer get the benefit of the doubt.

I was told the vax was mandatory or I would be fired (federal contractor mandate). I fought it and demanded accommodation for my sincere religious beliefs under the Civil Rights Act. Because I knew the law, submitted well researched documentation, and made clear I'd sue if it wasn't granted, my request was honored. No vax despite it being "mandatory". In talking to my coworkers afterwards, most wish they hadn't been so compliant in hindsight.

I was offering the rationale. I grew up when government was rational, and now that is no longer the case. Good for you that you managed to avoid the vax. I am sorry I took the two initial ones, but not as sorry as my family members who are in real medical trouble as a result of that damn shot.

Jeff C's avatar

Fair enough, and apologies for thinking you were justifying it.

The problem is so many people use this as the exact rationale for unquestioningly accepting authoritarian edicts. Those in charge use it to manipulate people through guilt (unvaxxed are "killing grandma", etc.).

It’s their right to choose to stay depending on their individual, personal circumstances not similar to any other, without being arm-chair judged for it, and it’s the rescuer’s right to choose to come or not to come. They don’t have to! That’s the risk we all take and we are aware of it. Luckily we have people who respect rights and freedoms, and they choose to come rescue anyway. Good and selfless people. What a concept, huh?

Seat belts in cars, and helmets on motorcyclists are mandatory in most places. Seat belts have saved a lot of lives, and helmets have saved a lot of brains. I have sympathy for the first responders, police, EMTs etc who have to deal with people's bad decisions. The responders don't always have a choice. I'd like as few of them to develop on-the-job PTSD as possible.

BTW-I rode Harleys for 30 yrs w/out a helmet (unless mandatory/law)-never had a problem.

That's a non-starter and false reasoning. Emergency personnel do not respond in the middle of a hurricane when it is too dangerous to travel. After that, it is their job to respond to calls for help.

She’s a Democrat 🤷‍♀️

I followed Denis Phillips’ forecasts and he was by far more reliable and never indulged in hype like that, contrary to a lot of others. You can caution and prepare people without resorting to hysterical hyperbole.

There's a video online (can't remember where I saw it) of a meteorologist) discussing the oncoming hurricane. He actually broke down in tears as he was discussing the strength of it, it was just so horrible. Talk about cringe.

I don't know about you, but I don't take people seriously who can't hold themselves together under stress. Not everyone is rock I get that, but not everyone should be in a position of authority or information dissemination. If you can't keep from crying when doing your job, then get a different job. People need accurate information without hyperbole, not some blubbering fool emoting on TV.

At some point it becomes clear that these people aren't just fools, but this is all coordinated to manipulate us. The hyperbole is intentional and designed to create fear within the population, as fearful people are easy to control.

Then do the country a favor and take the day off. Jeff C is correct, there’s a time and place for emotional display, and news during hurricanes needs to be disseminated factually without “excessive” emotion. Maybe other stories can handle that kind of display, but not disaster reporting during the disaster. Facts. Quick. Clear. Direction. Strength. Courage. Calm. Hope. Period.

Sorry I really don’t mean this to sound as harsh as it is coming out. 🤣 I have no beef with you personally. I’m just responding to the argument.

I hope that comment was meant to be sarcastic. If not, your attitude is exactly the problem. We all have our troubles but some of us somehow manage to keep it together.

Edit: Adding to this that making excuses for people's failings is leading to the death of professionalism. There's a time and a place, this was neither. That's why professionals recuse themselves from tasks when they believe they have an emotional conflict and cannot be objective.

So many examples of manipulating through fear: "take the vaxx or you'll die and kill Grandma too," "vote for Trump because is a threat to democracy." The list is endless and once you see it you can't unsee it. This technique used to be used primarily within cults. Now it's foisted on the general low information public.
