Genuinely asking, what's wrong with the little 'take one, leave one' library stands? My kids love them.

Well my guess is that this is just another virtue signaling ploy, just like the 'In this house we believe...' signs I see as I am out knocking doors for the last 2-3 years. And given what we have learned is in our schools' libraries, what is in these little free library stands may not be wholesome.

Okay, I see your perspective. Personally I'm a book lover and could see doing a little library for the fun of sharing books and no other motives. I think there's a lot of overlap with what these little things signal. It's a big sweep that catches a lot of people in it who wouldn't fit the assumptions. I see people make sweeping assumptions a lot, but I'd rather stick with what is clearly communicated rather than the little things that may or may not be signals of someones underlying beliefs. However you probably are right much of the time.

Oh I love the concept and we are book lovers too. We are on a dead end street so having a little free library wouldn't make sense, but we do donate books to various book drives when we run out of space. Our R women's group is collecting children's books to donate to our local food pantry. Every family who comes in with children, each child gets to pick a book to take home when they come in for groceries. But agree with the 'big sweep' - having knocked 1000's of doors over the past several years, my experience is that the free library households ARE both sides, but does seem like deep blue areas have more of them than red or purple areas. And if the library is accompanied by a rainbow flag and a "in this house we believe...." sign, then they are not interested in talking to conservatives.
