Not only rape but "defilement" according to one headline. That word irritates me - as though women who suffered rape are now unclean - unless they're talking about post-mortem "defilement" which is a whole 'nother implication of horror.

I just can’t imagine that they would stop the killing to rape or defile someone especially if they had just killed them. The intent seems to be to kill as many as possible for the biggest impact. The headlines are meant to get attention which it is doing. IMHO.

I think "defilement" in this context could mean many things other than "sexual impurity" - I think it means they were (also) sodomized (by people and objects) and their bodies brutalized (post-mortem) in ways that are religiously or culturally offensive to the victims. It's essentially everything a barbaric murderer could think to do to offend the deceased's family to incite rage. (Thankfully, my mind can't imagine much more, but I'm sure there's more.)
