Mat 24:3-8 Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?”
And Jesus answered and said to them: “Take heed that no one deceives you. For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many. And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of sorrows.”
There is more, of course, and you can read on but it seems that we are experiencing “birth pangs” a.k.a “sorrows” of the end times, as it has been described. Scripture is still being fulfilled as we live today. When we see the Abomination of Desolation, I’ll sit up and take notice.
In Matt 24, as you describe, Jesus explains to His disciples what to watch for so they may flee before it is too late to get out of Jerusalem. In Luke 21:20-22, Jesus explains, "For these are the days of vengeance, THAT ALL THINGS WHICH ARE WRITTEN (in the OT) MAY BE FULFILLED."
In Matt 24: 33-36, Jesus says, "...this generation (of those listening to Him) will by no means pass away till all these things are fulfilled. Heaven and earth WILL pass away but My words will by no means pass away. But of THAT day and hour (when heaven and earth pass away) no one knows...but My Father ONLY." Clearly, Jesus was not describing the end of the world for even He did not know that time.
Jesus delivers the same warning to the seven churches in Asia through John in Revelation. Because of the warnings of Jesus to the church in Jerusalem, they got out before Jerusalem was made desolate and the Temple was destroyed thus saving His followers as He promised them.
