I think a lot of it is likely due to the fact that the kinds of carbs consumed are very different now compared to 100 years ago and average daily activity levels are very different too.

Yes. And the addition of veg oils seems especially egregious.

Activity levels are part, but only part, of the story.

My spouse and I lost weight, spouse’s blood pressure normalized, and our ability to focus all improved on low carb diet with zero additional physical activity.

I know someone in her 50s who weighs less now *despite not exercising* than before she got pregnant more than a decade ago - all due to reducing carbs and eliminating veg oils. This person was not particularly overweight before getting pregnant, so it’s not like she shed a bunch of extra pounds. Not many 50-somethings can say they weigh less than before they got pregnant.
