That’s the part of the Handmaid’s Tale (the book, which I read a couple of decades ago, way before the series) that I found chilling and prescient. They were able to “turn off” every woman’s access to credit cards and bank accounts. So the women were made completely financially dependent. It certainly seems like they could use any criteria to do this kind of thing to people they wanted to control.
