Our child's neuro-pediatric-psychiatrist prescribed brand only because she and we could tell the difference. The brand name meds were NOT covered by our health insurance...so we were forced to pay out of pocket, $$$$$. Thankfully they are no longer needed, as coping skills taught by the therapist are still in use today. I could write a book about the maze we lived through. (Profound ADHD with comorbidities diagnosis). We saw many situations turn into nightmares when the prescribed meds were not used.... So, I have to put in my 2 cents here... those meds saved a life by helping calm the tempestuousness exhibited. Today, she is a very happy, business savvy, successful, non-college graduate with a six figure income. One we prayed for endlessly. I am deeply grateful. God's child.
God bless your daughter and thank goodness things turned out ok.
I can't speak for everyone here but I think what most are objecting to is using mind-altering drugs as a treatment rather than a short-term stop gap tool. You mentioned yourself that the key was developing coping skills rather than the drugs (which suppressed anti-social behavior). No doubt drugs can be useful with broken impulse control but it's done by quelling emotions rather than actually fixing the problem. It can help keep the peace in the home but it doesn't actually correct the issue, that was done by her learning to deal with reality rather than denying it (i.e. the coping skills).
The goal of every drug started should be to stop using it. Drugs are poisons that can be very helpful when short-term, judiciously, and wisely applied. The problem now is that drugs are treated as fertilizers to be taken daily for decades. It's not by accident as that's where the money is.
Cannot agree with you more! The saddest thing we discovered was how many local pediatricians dispense 1000's of Ritalin prescriptions, but not a single one ever recommends or referred them for therapy! Therapy should be required! It made all of the difference! And, not one of them had any idea the generics don't work the same as brand.

Sorry for the road you had to travel but so thankful for all of you that things turned out well. God bless you.
That road was hard, but wonderfully paved with God's abundant grace. He is enough!
