People in some of that generation, like my dad, were brought up to trust doctors unconditionally. And in his day, they were a lot more honorable than they are now (obviously not all are bad now) and actually did their jobs of healing. Now they are - for the most part - bought off by big pharma and have nothing to do with healing, only managing symptoms. But I think a lot of these older folks were still clinging to the idea that the profession is honorable so they will believe anything a doctor says.
But that doesn't explain the irrational fear and things like demanding their grandkids get vaxxed to come over. I think it's because they largely abandoned Christianity, or cling to it as a cultural artifact rather than following the teachings of Christ. A lifetime of submission to Christ and biblical understanding gives one a far different perspective on the temporal nature of all of the things of this world.. The elderly used to have this, now it's lacking in many if not most.
My brother got the shot because he was over 65, he trusted science - actual science, (but somewhere along the line, the rules changed) and he did a lot of face to face meeting with medically frail, elderly people and he didn't want to get them sick. He wishes he hadn't gotten it. He wishes the medical system hadn't whored itself out to the highest bidder. Not all people got it because they lacked common sense or were frightened or were self seeking. Some people were trying to the best with the info they had.
Actually, I think the greatest generation had a very healthy distrust of government and corporations. My mother always distrusted Big Pharma, and my father Big Oil (they are one and the same) , and the government. when the Queen came to Toronto in 1953, he would not walk around the block to see her. They also had to rely on themselves for survival . The mental midgets today are so dependent on the government for almost everything they have willingly given up their desire to think. It boggles my mind.

Yep, that is a huge part of it.

What a great point!
