Growing up in Newark NJ among many blacks, I can tell you that more are aligned with republican values than the mainstream wants everyone to think.
Similar experience. Unfortunately, many have no faith in the system and refuse to vote. Maybe this election will re-define black power.
Here in El Paso, Texas, someone running for public office said that a lot of Hispanics just don't know that they aren't blue - meaning that historically they have voted Democrat, but their values align more closely with Republicans.
