Wait, wait it need to ask! Does anyone else have trouble getting to a comment later in the day? As in... if someone comments on something you said and you click on it but it just goes to the top of the comments? This happens to me every day, but not at first, not until there are a certain number of comments. Does this happen to everyone or is it a setting I have? I feel like I’ve tried everything with the settings, but maybe not. I’m talking about in the app, not on the webpage.
I have trouble if I go to Jeff's substack late in the day. The page of comments always has trouble loading. And if someone answers my comment and I receive the email notification, when I click on the other person's comment, it takes me to to the top of the comment page...never to the proper place to see which one of my comments got a response.
Yep, it's that there are SO many comments later in the day, many hundreds. I often cannot find one I'm looking for unless I get a notification from Substack of a "like" or reply. And when it's hot off the press, like now, while I'm writing a comment, the comment box suddenly disappears on me. I have to scroll to find it, lol.
I read the comments first on top until there are no more. Then later in the day I do “newest first’ and can read newest down to the top I started with. Later it’s impossible to read them all so I give up.
The comment box will move if, while you are typing in it, someone else "likes" the comment to which you are responding (thus moving it up in the thread). Likewise, if comments below the one to which you are responding get "liked" the box will shift down. It took me a while to figure it out.
Not just you Valerie. I read substack via the app not email. If I get a comment, I can see a portion of it. But if I try & link back to read the entire comment it usually takes me to the top of the comment page. Sometimes the comments will link on other substacks that that aren’t as loaded up with comments as C&C.
That happens to me as well. Very frustrating to be ushered to the top of the page when using the back link.
In fact, “everything” that has been mentioned in this thread has happened to me. Scrolling through hundreds of comments to find your place again is not a reasonable option. 🙄
Try going to an email notification of a "like" on your original comment. From there, click on your comment so it can take you to substack to view your comment. It will bring up your comment plus replies to your comment.
If you try to only view the replies to your comment via the email notification, substack can't locate it once comments reach a certain #. I find this happens frequently once total comments reach 500+. Some days are better or worse.
I use lap top and check the activity at top of page. Then you can click on that. Clicking on the email notification does not work. Like you said. I use at the top of the comments arrow/link to see the recent comments.
I use the Find feature (located in my browser settings) You may have to keep loading the next set of comments to search - or just load them all and then search.
Happens to me too. If you click on the comment and it goes to the top of the comments section, try refreshing the page. It usually then goes to the comment itself.
Seems like substack gets stuck when there are hundreds of comments and probably times out. Refreshing the page gives it another try and it usually works (for me at least).
Yes. If I have time to go back and go through the comments, I will. But Jeff Childers is a popular guy and I cannot always wade through all the comments to find what I’m looking for. It’s frustrating.
I’m sure it’s just a thing with SubStack but it is great rating.
More likely it is something substack needs to fix though I understand the suspicion. P.S. I love love love all government beauracrats and all J6ers should rot in jail forever! <big sarc>
As others have noted, it's simply a result of the massive numbers of comments in a short time. One hack I finally figured out is to tap the long, vertical line at the left side to collapse each thread. It's tough, because y'all are such a great bunch of people, and I love to read your comments!
I just recently got the app and honestly, often prefer to open the webpage to comment because I find it more user friendly. Maybe it’s just because I’m more used to the webpage format, but it seems easier to navigate, to me.
Sorting comments chronologically instead of "top first" seems to help. Just remember to check the sorting if you post a new comment, in case it reverts.
Yep. Same issue in the app. It’s frustrating when I see that the response is something I want to respond to, but searching for my original comment is a major PIA!
I click on the red letter link which is my own comment. It opens and i can see the comments to my comment. I never click on the one you are. I read in a browser. Not the app. I dislike the app.
What I’ve noticed is that if the comment is hidden under a “more comments” box or “replies” box, the search feature won’t take you to it. If it’s a top line comment, it goes directly there.
I've had the same issue and so I just started ignoring responses to my comments later in the day. Too bad, too, because I would like to acknowledge people who take the time to respond but if I can't figure out what the response means.....

I am using a laptop.
Substack's system may not be designed to handle soooo many comments efficiently.
Jeff’s just too damned successful!

Yes I noticed that too and it is understandable but very frustrating when you’re trying to finish writing a comment and it jumps around like that!

That's it. Thanks.
Oh wow, I have assumed all this time it was my lack of tech skills
I thought it was my non techs skills as well.
Ok so it’s not just me. Frustrating, but I love the comment section here so I’m not going anywhere. Wish there was a fix.
When replies go to my email, I click on "my comment" and it takes me to that particular comment. Not to the top of the comment page.
I don’t own a laptop. The glitch occurs on my iPhone too.

See my comment above Kathleen, same things happens on my laptop. The refresh trick usually works.
Click on the word “comment” as in “replied to your COMMENT.”
You should jump to your own comment so you can find it.
The link is not differentiated by color. That mostly works for me.
Thanks.

Yes! There needs to be a “Search comments” feature.
YES!!!
I use the Find feature (located in my browser settings) You may have to keep loading the next set of comments to search - or just load them all and then search.
Ah,but that would imply the comments were more important than the post….
They are entertaining!

I’m trying this for sure! Thanks

Jeff's substack gets the most comments of all the Substacks I read.
Call me suspicious...but are the Fed "disinformation" hunters messing about?

I'm having that same situation
Yall it already happened. 8:40 and my comment was at 8:15. Apparently we’re a talky bunch today. 😂😂
Yes! It drives me nuts. I spend time I don’t have scrolling trying to find the comment to reply. Most of the time I give up.
As others have noted, it's simply a result of the massive numbers of comments in a short time. One hack I finally figured out is to tap the long, vertical line at the left side to collapse each thread. It's tough, because y'all are such a great bunch of people, and I love to read your comments!
Unfortunately, tapping the line in the app doesn’t do anything. 😞
I find the app pretty useless....

And one of those options should have been “continue thread.” I just couldn’t remember that term.
I've had the same issue and so I just started ignoring responses to my comments later in the day. Too bad, too, because I would like to acknowledge people who take the time to respond but if I can't figure out what the response means.....
I have same problem on the website. They need better software people :)
That’s why I really appreciate a ‘like’ along with a reply (even if the response is not in agreement), because it links the two.
