One of the smartest observations, DeSantis has made, and one that should be common sense discernment to anyone over the age 60 who remembers when the weather was just the weather and not “smoke” graphics for 4 straight months, (thank you Weather Channel), even when there were late summer morning mists typical of this time of year. People have totally lost the perspective of patterns that we grew up with, that affect all aspects of our everyday life. “The more things change, the more they stay the same.” And, “There is nothing new under the sun”. Our news flip flops almost daily, fed by our government, and yet people can’t seem to figure it out.
Rural people always talked about the weather. More than likely they were farmers and their livelihoods depended on watching the weather. It was a topic you could count on.
Exactly! Just as a reminder of the lethality of hurricanes historically---the record holder for deadliest natural disaster in the USA is ..... the Galveston Hurricane of 1900. They still don’t know exactly how many people perished--between 6000-8000 deaths. Max winds of 140 mph. Left 30,000+ people homeless. No global warming caused that. Of course, they didn’t know the storm was coming. So technology in forecasting has has helped, but as we saw in Maui, advances in warning systems only work if you use them.
I’m 73 and they were talking about a new ice age going to take us all out........tsk. Tsk....you weren’t paying attention to the ‘xperts’ (pronounced csssperrttss) back then. The weather has been ‘out to get us’ since the 60’s!!!! And nuclear war in the 50’s!!! Where were you!!!!!!
Child? They been selling fear since I was born, lol!!!!

I remember when we were supposed to talk about the weather to keep away from politics! 😝

Farmer’s lament:
“Rain and sex—their neighbor always got more.” 😁
Right! And now they are the same "third rail" of conversation.
Sigh. Everything has been politicized. Absolutely everything.
😆

And after "New Ice Age", it was "Hole in the Ozone Layer", and "Acid Rain" and "Deforestation" and then "Global Warming"... did I miss any?
