Well, not immediately, but they began aging and eventually did die. Death came into the world as a result of the Fall. Prior to that, there was no death. They were immortal. Death only entered the creation through sin. That's why Death will be the last enemy conquered.
1 Cor: 24 Then comes the end, when He delivers the kingdom to God the Father, when He puts an end to all rule and all authority and power. 25 For He must reign till He has put all enemies under His feet. 26 The last enemy that will be destroyed is death. 27 For “He has put all things under His feet.”
I praise God that since His ascension Christ now sits on the throne ruling and reigning in history. As His Body on earth, this is the war we are in as His body "till He has put all enemies under His feet."
LOL... it's not magic. There wasn't any "granting". Read Genesis. When God created the "creation", it was perfect. How could it be anything other. Death and entropy didn't exist. Death came into the creation through sin and God's curse upon it. In the end, the creation will be restored to a perfect condition when death is finally conquered, the new heavens and new earth.
I do not see any mention of immortality in Genesis.
And what kind of society would we have if humans had no knowledge of
good and evil? This fable is nonsensical.
'The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”
Consider the meaning of this in conjunction with Genesis.

21 For since by man (Adam) came death, by Man (Christ) also came the resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive. 23 But each one in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who are Christ’s at His coming. 24 Then comes the end, when He delivers the kingdom to God the Father, when He puts an end to all rule and all authority and power. 25 For He must reign till He has put all enemies under His feet. 26 The LAST enemy that will be destroyed is death.
Paul is clearly saying that death was not part of the Creation as death only came about because of Adam. And thus the need for the Messiah to come and restore things proper.
Adam was told not to eat of that fruit at that point in time. In later maturity, that would change. Adam had but to wait but instead rebelled. The Second Adam, the Messiah, fulfilled God's covenant and ascended to glory to sit on the throne as King at the right hand of the Father.

Well, it seems to me that 900 years is a pretty ripe old age.
Living 20 times the average lifespan of the time doesn't
sound like death was quite as eminent as the Lord inferred.
Compared to immortality? If they die instantly or next month or in 900 years, they STILL die.

I would not agree that Paul is clearly saying anything in that passage.
And what does this christ have to do with the Adam and Eve fable?

but rather that he was a supernatural spiritual being.
