Pay down the debt first. Maybe an initial rebate of $100 per taxpayer when they file to save paperwork cost. That initial rebate is a token to show what could happen with Trump's rebate program once the debt is under control.

Here is the problem with giving everyone $5000. Is it for taxpayers or everyone? If it's only going to taxpayers, you can be sure there will be plenty of people complaining that they didn't get a check. I think $5000 is too much. Maybe give taxpayers $1000 as an act of good faith but you will still hear the non-taxpayers complaining. I would prefer that the government keep it all and use it to pay down the debt. You need to reduce costs and expenses and show the American people that it can be done. Also, I don't want to hear all of the whiners who didn't get a check. You shouldn't get one if you don't pay taxes.

Yes, TAXPAYERS should be the recipients EXCLUSIVELY. My childhood friend up on Bainbridge Island (WA) who has lived in gubmint-subsidized housing for most of her adult life, drawing disability SSI because she is...too depressed? I dunno ...anyway, she sees Trump's administration as the 4th Reich. And of course, you know what that makes Trump...🙄🙄🙄 BUT SHE SHOULD NEVER EVER get a rebate!!!! 🤬🤬🤬🤬

I absolutely agree. I'm on SSI due to a medical disability, but by no means do I think that I am entitled to $5K of the taxpayers money. I'm just grateful that my small stipend doesn't get taxed. 😅

🥰 Not trying to bash anyone in your situation...but it galls me when my ultra lib pal continues to tell me the work the DOGE boys are doing is so wrong...but she has hardly ever held a job her whole life. 😢

I didn't think you were bashing anyone at all! I'm with you, I think there are people on welfare and SSI that shouldn't be. For my part, I'd give anything to be able to work, I have an advanced degree that I'm too exhausted to use. Have been working with alternative health practitioners for over 10 years trying to get better (after the Allopathic doctors blew me off), but 50% better than bedridden still isn't enough to hold down even a part-time job, sadly. Obviously, I still feel guilty about having to be on the dole. But I'm grateful to have it, so I'm not a complete burden on my family.

The reason they're floating this idea is to insure people keep paying their taxes in spite of the Doge findings. With more to come.

Also, wouldn’t giving all that money be inflationary?

Tax credits let people earn money by filing tax returns, even when they pay no taxes. Not sure that makes sense; they’re already surviving on our tax dollars.

robren72's avatar

I'm not sure what you mean...if you don't pay any income taxes, you cannot file an income tax return. Please clarify what you mean by "not paying any taxes"?

Expand full comment
G Harkness's avatar

Of course you can. If anything was withheld and you don't "owe" it, you'll file a return to get that back. If you have very low income but you worked, you'll file to get Earned Income Credit.

Note I'm not endorsing this; just saying that's what happens.

For 2021 you could get $3600 for each child under 6 or $3000 for a child between 6 and 17 even if you had no income, did not work, paid no social security taxes. Truth. Sorry, I didn’t realize that you now have to claim earned income. Idk when that changed.

robren72's avatar

Wow, what State is that in? Here in Texas, you can only claim child tax credits IF you actually pay taxes. Welfare and non-taxable income do not count.

I’m also not certain if it’s an offset on earned income, or a “you tried, here’s some money.”

Bad idea and with the look of buying the people's favor. And really, displays a bad opinion of the people's moral fiber on the part of the government.

Pay down the debt, and restructure. Thanks Catherine.

A $5000 tax credit may make more sense. $5000 in cash to every taxpayer would send inflation soaring. Plus the credit would target those who overpaid their taxes.

IMHO, the federal govt giving everyone $5k is a terrible idea and will just raise inflation even further. Plus, You know they would give it to people who didn’t pay taxes.

Personally, I think everyone who paid actual taxes the last 5 years should get a $5k tax deduction for the next 5 (20?) years. Don’t give it to the deadbeats, that would just add insult to injury.

AcCording to people like Edward Doud, the economy will take a hit by Trumps many corrective actions. So Trumps idea would actually help to keep the economy stimulated.

“ Whatever the final number is remember while it’s fraud and we need to stop it of course….a lot of that fraud recycles into the economy as consumption.

Everything @DOGE discovers and shuts down will have a short term effect on GDP. Reducing government expenditures has an immediate impact on GDP before Trump’s other initiatives can take hold.

IMHO they are not doing a good job of signaling this and will be blamed for the valley in economic growth.”
